Planning for summer

I'm going al fresco this year - that's not to say I don't already have several hundred palms in pots outdoors - but much of my greenhouse stock is coming out, and going under shade cloth. Here is a list of palms I have that stay outside year-round, in my Mediterranean /SoCal climate: Acoelorrhaphe wrightii Bismarckia nobilis (silver) Brahea armata Brahea nitida Brahea sp. (Super Silver) Brahea sarukhanii Butia capitata Chambeyronia macrocarpa Dypsis decaryi Hedyscepe canterburyana Jubaea chilensis Livistona chinensis Livistona nitida Livistona decipiens Livistona sp. Nannorrhops arabica Parajubea torallyi v. microcarpa Phoenix canariensis Phoenix dact…

Jubaea chilensis

For those of you who are interested in Jubaeas, go to Travel Logs and check out the attachment that Bruno posted of Jubaeas in habitat in Chile. These are the best photos that I have seen of Jubaeas in habitat. Credit must go where credit is due, and the pictures were taken by Brandt Maxwell from the French palm site, Fous de Palmiers. Several things strike me. I'm surprised that not only do the palms grow in the valleys where it might be expected to be more moist, but also on the mountain tops where it must be much dryer. From the xerophilous plants growing around the Jubaeas, it must be an area where long periods of drought can be expected. I also noticed the blacken…

A close shave..

Today I decided to see if I could help my Washingtonia, following the landslide here a couple of weeks ago. Again, I was lucky with the palms, as you can see how close the Washingtonia came to being flattened. The smooth, grey area in the foreground is the top of the reinforced concrete wall - approx. 10" thick x 13ft high. The trunk was cleanly "scalped" by the reinforced concrete, which must have also pushed the tree forward in the soil, since the lower part of the trunk is unscathed. Lucky Washie! This tree was photographed to create the current IPS logo, so it's nice to know that good fortune prevails. For anyone unfamiliar with the background to this post, see The…

Rainy Day Garden~~~<<

A couple of weeks ago I observed a tall spear on my Chambeyronia macrocarpa and thought, "That won't open for a couple of months..." Surprise! Here it is, the end of February, and it's going for it! This was a one-gallon purchased at my first Quail Gardens PSSC sale back in maybe 2006? (I could check...), bought from Jerry Anderson for a pittance and immediately stuffed in the dirt. Doing well, thank you.

64th Miami International Orchid Show
by virtualpalm- 26 replies

The South Florida Palm Society and The Cycad Society joined forces to set up an "other plant society" booth at the 64th Miami International Orchid Show this week. At the special request of the organizers of the show -- the South Florida Orchid Society -- we were happy to abide, and somehow our joint booth ended up being the largest at the show. The show started today and runs through Sunday at the Doubletree Hotel Convention Center located at 711 NW 72nd Ave. near the Miami International Airport. Below are a few photos of the palm/cycad booth: The "back" of the booth from a distance: The "back" of the booth closer up: Inside the booth: The combined palm/…

Hello, Living in a Rhynchophorus ferrugineus infested country and having my palm garden in one of the most devastated cities of Greece from this weevil(Pyrgos ) and seeing more and more infected palms every time i visit there,i was wondering, how those of you who live in RPW infested countries(European countries mostly but others as well...) deal with this pest and your palm gardens...Is it a serious threat for you? Do you apply any preventive measures? Is it only a serious threat for Phoenix canariensis and very rarely attacks other species? What about once all P. canariensis of the area are dead? Does it move away or does it infect other species present in the area? …

Finding microclimates in your yard.

So I was wondering if there was a way to find microclimates in your yard... Is it just by looking at how things are constructed, and determining from that what will be warmer in the winter, or what? Thanks, Keith

Pritchardia pacifica
by MattyB- 27 replies

I tried P. pacifica in the ground here in SoCal last year and it died by the time February rolled around. This years contestant is still growing strong even though it's the end of February. I attribute this to the upgrade in microclimate planting location that I choose this year, and to the fact that it's been a relatively warm winter. I still don't think it'll make it out alive so I thought I'd show some pics before it kicked the bucket.

update on cold damage to the coconuts @ Sea World Orlando
by Eric in Orlando- 14 replies
- 2.4k views
I was out to Sea World Sunday afternoon and got some photos of the coconut palms and some others before it got dark. Most had cold damage, a few had just minor amounts. Not bad for the winter we had. I know SW heats them on cold nights. I think they said something like that they will use the heaters if it is supposed to be below 37F. They must have run them a long time and many nights this winter. Didn't get photos but I also drove by the resort near Sea World with the mature royal palms and coconut. These are the ones I have posted photos of before. They are growing right out in the open. Suprisingly the royals had little damage and the coconut was about 60% burnt. I …

Road through U of Miami Arboretum
by fastfeat- 3 replies

Not sure if this has been covered yet, and it's a little late in coming, as I've been in CA and not been as involved in SoFla things, but there are plans to put a road through U of M's Arboretum, a small but very diverse collection of plants, many with economic uses, from around the world. Wilma and Katrina did a number on the place, and through extensive replanting, the place is beginning to shine again. But Coral Gables' plan to put a road through the place will be devastating again. This is text from John Cozza at U of M as I got it. If you can help him out by writing letters or contributing somehow, please contact him at jcozza@bio.miami.edu It sounds like there …

Thought I'd show you guys what my palms are looking like this summer. Weather has been extremely cold! Coldest summer since 1992, and that was the coldest summer ever here. My washingtonia robusta is really putting on size/mass. It has grew almost 24" since spring. Here is a pic of it when I planted it, in case you don't remember. Here it is recently. Here is my trachycarpus fortunei from last summer. Here it is recently.
