update on cold damage to the coconuts @ Sea World Orlando
by Eric in Orlando- 14 replies
- 2.4k views
I was out to Sea World Sunday afternoon and got some photos of the coconut palms and some others before it got dark. Most had cold damage, a few had just minor amounts. Not bad for the winter we had. I know SW heats them on cold nights. I think they said something like that they will use the heaters if it is supposed to be below 37F. They must have run them a long time and many nights this winter. Didn't get photos but I also drove by the resort near Sea World with the mature royal palms and coconut. These are the ones I have posted photos of before. They are growing right out in the open. Suprisingly the royals had little damage and the coconut was about 60% burnt. I …

Road through U of Miami Arboretum
by fastfeat- 3 replies

Not sure if this has been covered yet, and it's a little late in coming, as I've been in CA and not been as involved in SoFla things, but there are plans to put a road through U of M's Arboretum, a small but very diverse collection of plants, many with economic uses, from around the world. Wilma and Katrina did a number on the place, and through extensive replanting, the place is beginning to shine again. But Coral Gables' plan to put a road through the place will be devastating again. This is text from John Cozza at U of M as I got it. If you can help him out by writing letters or contributing somehow, please contact him at jcozza@bio.miami.edu It sounds like there …

Thought I'd show you guys what my palms are looking like this summer. Weather has been extremely cold! Coldest summer since 1992, and that was the coldest summer ever here. My washingtonia robusta is really putting on size/mass. It has grew almost 24" since spring. Here is a pic of it when I planted it, in case you don't remember. Here it is recently. Here is my trachycarpus fortunei from last summer. Here it is recently.

I'm going to San Jose for a few days at the end of the month. Could anyone suggest a good place to see palms? I'm really interested in seeing stuff that doesn't grow here in Florida. Particularly some large Jubaeas and Ceroxylons.

Being I live in Murrieta, CA it is definitely tricky growing a good majority of the more tropical looking palm trees (kings, kentias, royals, etc.) We have highs to about 110 degrees and lows which can hit 26 degrees. I am probably pushing the envelope with some of the palms I am trying to grow at my house...but I am not gonna let the fact that I live in the desert keep me from trying to enjoy some of my favorite palms. I am kind of new to palm trees but much like all of you I enjoy collecting them and learning as much as I can about them. I haven't had much time to post to this site but I am going to start making more of an effort...so first off I wanted to post…

Sometime back in maybe 1996 I bought some "conetainers" from Kapoho Palms. One was to be P. minor. It has grown nicely over the years and for the first time has some seeds on it. But....someone who saw a picture here didn't think it was minor, so here are some photos and what do you think? Colin you are the Pritchardia expert what do I have???

Dear Friends This gives me immense pleasure in inviting you all to a yet another intreasting topic on repotting of this beautiful Arenga hookeriana /Hooker's Fish Tail Palm. And this palm had come to my residence as a gift from a new thai forum friend by name Jakkrit. And my sincere thanks to you for this lovely parcel ! And the parcel & packing was simply stunningly superb, iam quite sure that this A.Hookeriana palm would survive this transport shock, since not a single leaf was damaged due to great packing & also due to less distance(thailand to india).. And i must say that its surprising to me,when jakkrit offered this gift..since i was thinking of buying …

Translating Spanish in Chambeyronia Thread
by GTClover- 1 reply

This may be something most of you know, or maybe there’s an info page I could have read. But I don’t speak Spanish and I wanted to know what was being said in the great thread in the Spanish Forum on Chambeyronias. The photos of this beautiful palm are wonderful. It was my son suggested I use this link http://translate.google.com/# It works well for the dialog; the only problem is you can’t enlarge the pictures while doing this. Maybe this will be helpful to someone. Or perhaps someone could tell me if there is a better way to do this? Susan

What do you guys think is the most attractive drought tolerant palm? I am looking for ideas to plant in a particular area in my yard that is fairly dry. I am looking for about two species and they must be something I am not currently growing or have on my to buy list. Any thoughts? I presently have or on my to buy list(which I think are drought tolerant): Coccothrinax argentata Coccothrinax crinta Pseudophoenix sargentii Pseudophoenix vinnifera Phoenix dactylifera serena repoens dypsis decaryii syagrus coronata Laura

I'd like to ask for help with identifying these. Both look like a microspadix to me, but the fruits are different. The fruits of the first one are slightly larger, look like little cranberries, have more pulp but the actual seeds are a bit smaller. The fruits of the second one are a bit smaller, look like tiny oranges, have less pulp, but the actual seeds are larger.

I wonder how this winter compares to the 1980s! Even some coconuts in extreme South Florida look very similar to these ones growing close to the southern edge of the St. Petersburg Peninsula, opposite Tampa. I think these will recover.

Seeds germinated

This is not so important for most of palm growers! Anyway, it is for me! In past november, colected freshly, put 4 seeds on the way to germinate, on classic moisture, and other 8 in vermiculite. After all this time, two of the four showed root! Enough to celebrate!

Brisbane Butias and Friends

I got called in to our Brisbane office today to fix some issues, and when I finished took a quick walk over to the local park. This is quite an old park that had been planted out with some hardy palm species many years ago. These are old standards such as Butia capitata, Syagrus romanzoffiana etc This park had mainly these two species, but also had a fine specimen of a mule palm, probably planted as a Butia at the time. Here is the park, not very large, and surrounded on all sides by busy city streets A young Butia had nice colour Here is an old Mule palm Another view of the same palm Some old Syagrus

Crown rotting on Jubaea Chilensis
by BeaumontTropics- 7 replies
- 1.2k views
I read somewhere recently that the "Jubzilla" as MattyB called it, can suffer from too much water on the crown. Should this plant only be irrigated from below, and has anyone had this rotting effect happen to their Juby? I know some palms, (queens and young butias) seem to really thrive from "overhead" watering. Maybe it's the whole "natural" rainfall thing they like, I don't know? Let me know what you palmers' think! I appreciate it! -eric

I collected some Hyphaene thebaica seed while in Ft. Myers, and nothing has happened yet. They seem to have a weird, dry pulpy inside, and I opened one and nothing was inside... I didn't want to take the risk with the others, so I haven't opened any more yet. What the heck is up with these seeds? They seem really weird.. Here's a pic
