Repotting damage?
by newtothis- 5 replies
- 2.2k views
I recieved a chambeyronia macrocarpa seedling, on its 3rd leaf, about 8" high and roots about the same 8". It came wrapped in moss and when i repotted it and pushed down on the soil to compact it around the roots, I pushed too close to the seed and heard a "crackle?". I think I pulled it partly off but not all the way. It's still green today 1 day later but will it die?

Brahea Clara care query
by James Agren- 3 replies
I have a couple Brahea Clara. One one gal. and one seven gal., which is about 2.5'. I'm in Vista, CA. so growing conditions are not an issue, however, I'm curious if anyone can share some valuable insight into how to best care for this palm. Specifically, would this palm be affected negatively by water from an overhead sprinkler or is this no problem for a Brahea? I bet a regular Mexican Fan Palm would only benefit from twice a week Rainbird blasts. Also, do you fertilize this palm much or no? I'm thinking the regular Mex Fan is probably about the same kinda animal but I dunno. I appreciate your feedback. Thanks! James

My favorite nursery in town 1 2
by Gileno Machado- 40 replies
- 2.6k views
We went to a nice palm nursery yesterday where I hadn't been for the last 3 years or so. It is called Atmosphera and belongs to a couple of good friends from Recife, Paulo and Brenda, who invited our family for a tour at the gardens. Their production line has grown a lot lately as the economy is improving and many new landscape projects are demanding new different plants in our town. The nursery is located 25 km to the north of Recife, bordering a preserved Atlantic forest state park. They live next door to their nursery where they have lovely private gardens too. The property has some 10 hectares and several ponds. They're growing some 40 species of palms among many ot…

I'm designing a website for my landscaping business and of course I have a section devoted to palms. At the moment I'm after habitat pictures of Bismarckia nobilis, Phoenix dactylifera, and Rhopalostylis sapida. If anyone is willing to let me use a photo on my website let me know on the forum or PM me. I will put your credits for the picture on the website. I'm trying to make my website informative and interesting. Thanks in advance. Best regards Tyrone

What this critters have in common with me?
by Alberto- 8 replies
- 1.2k views
They all love palm trees!!!! That is one of the few disadvantages when you have native palm species in your region...you will have palm pests... Let me begin with the ´´nicest´´ of the two. I call it ´´besouro-vermelho´´. No it´s not the infamous Rhinchophorus ferrugineus! I read the latin name of this bug sometime ago ,but cannot remember it.This red bug is very slow,so you can easily catch them from the frond were they stay practically not moving at all. They probably tastes bad or are poisonous because there collor says to all the predators: Look,I´m here!!! This was the last photo before execution (it lost it´s head!)

Variability in Bactris hondurensis
by Dewayne in Ticolandia- 10 replies
- 1.2k views
I am impressed with the high degree of variability within different Costa Rican collections of Bactris hondurensis. 1. Spines- these vary from almost spineless to excessively spiny. 2. Leaf pubescence- from heavy pubescence to almost glabrous. 3. Leaves- although mostly with bifid leaves one collection has pinnate leaves. 4. Resistance to leaf spotting- most of the collections are heavily spotted, but two are free or nearly free of spotting. In those places where it is not prudent to grow spiny palms, you are missing out on a lot of joys that this family offers.

Sabal Rosei
by Dave H- 4 replies

This palm is tagged as Sabal Rosei, it seemed like it fruited very young, not even an above ground trunk. There are multiple species in very close proximity, so I'm guessing they could be hybridized. Here are the species I can recall by memory... I put the Casurina seeds next to them for color comparison. Bermudadana Casurina Causarium Minor Uresana Palmetto Rosei So to the first few folks I have about 30 seeds... Dave

Garden pics 1 2
by Tyrone- 56 replies

Well I thought I'd post some pics of the garden. I'm not the best photographer and some of the plants are getting hard to photograph. Also it was windy so fronds kind of get in the way when the shutter goes. Mike wanted to see the coconut which doesn't look as good as one in maybe Malaysia but it's happy. It did burn a bit in the 40C plus weather we had, but that was older growth formed in cooler weather. The newer growth sailed through the heat. It's continuing to bulk up and is starting to trunk but the distance between rings must be quite small. It will be a stumpy dwarf I think. That being said during the height of the heatwave it was growing 2.5cm a night in the s…

Hi folks, I´m designing an holistic retreat resort in Surrey south east England as my Landscape Architecture final degree proyect, despite the fact that this kind of proyect is not "my cup of tea"(as they say arround here),I'm more in to urban landscape arch., I am enjoying the whole design proccess, and learning a different aspect of the profession . I am proposing a few palm species for the planting pallete scheme, like Jubaea chillensis, T.fortuney (there is a very healthy one on site already), and Brahea armata. Despite the fact that in London (where I live at the moment), there are quite a few Washingtonia,Butia,Jubaea, P.canariensis, P.dactylifera(weird I…
