Greatest latitude Royal Palm
by bubba- 28 replies
- 2.9k views
A topic in Freeze Damage pertains to discussions primarily regarding Florida Royals and their greatest latitude. Most likely, that is near Daytona at 29 degrees North plus. I know numerous specimens are easily surviving in California at latitudes of atleast 34 degrees North. In Europe, I have read about and seen photographs of specimens in Gibraltar(36/11 North), Malaga(36/43 North),Allicante(38/20 North)and perhaps Lisbon,Portugal(38/43 North). That leaves out the other usual suspects like Australia,South Africa, Greece and points further North in California. Any reports beyond those confirmed in Allicante,Spain at 38/20 North?

Palm ID

Last night I watched the first couple episodes of Discovery's new "Life" series by the same people who did "Planet Earth". In the first (I think) episode, about midway through, there was a sequence about some cliff-dwelling S. American monkeys who use stones to crack seeds of a so-called "nut palm". The visuals show the monkeys picking large seeds from a trunkless, pinnate palm. The seeds resemble those of Attalea. Has someone watched this episode? Is that trunkless "nut palm" an Attalea? If so, what species?

How to right a palm on your own!
by John in Andalucia- 13 replies

Anyone who followed the saga of my garden being demolished by a landslide, will recall the Washingtonia that took a blow. Topic link Our neighbour has worked fast, and the new boulder wall is finished. He was intending to help me right the Washie tomorrow with a digger and rope from up on his terrace, but I was worried that the angle of the "pull" would be too steep and lift it out of the ground. So this evening (sorry for the dark photos) I tried something a little more genteel. All you need is a bottle jack, some half-bricks for shims and two poles, or lengths of wood; one to act as the ram, and the other as a prop. Simple, but effective. I also scooped away the s…

Is this sunburn?
by Zeeth- 4 replies

Today I noticed that my indoor Howea forsteriana has what looks like sunburn... but... it's been in that same spot for 9 months The leaf is right by the window, and the UV index yesterday was kind of high I guess, but would the difference between summer and winter sun be enough to sunburn a palm? Here's a pic

Uncovered My Palms
by wxman- 26 replies
- 1.3k views
Within the last week or so the weather has turned and we are getting 50s by day and 30s by night so I uncovered my two palms that I have protected. Minimum temperature here in Wisconsin was -1F this winter. Received about 45 inches of snow over the course of the winter with about 80 daytime maximum temperatures below freezing. First palm, trachycarpus fortunei: Second palm, washingtonia robusta: I think the trunk got really fat over the winter on the robusta. I wonder what would cause the trunk to fatten up over winter. Here is a picture from last fall. Thanks for looking.

First on the adgenda was a visit to Jonathan down in sunny south arm 24 acres of palm planting in a seaside paradise ! Jon has many parajubaea's planted out along a bank such as this one . colin was surprised by the growth of Jonathan's Hedyscepe's bought from LHI as tiny sprouted seeds in August 2008 I have two of these hedys on steroids back home hehehe! Clogged drain pipes, evil ficus roots, a chain, and a dualie

All the toilets are clogged at the office... YIPEE. I rip the toilet off the floor and shove a 50 snake down the drain, doesn't even come close to finding the blockage. I'm not able to fix it with my tools... After a 700 something dollar plumber expense and a jetter that snaked about 180 feet from the closest drain we found and removed a huge bunch of roots. Long, thin, poopy covered, and happy ficus roots. The ficus hedge planted on the south side of my parking lot (which happened to be healthy and unfazed by the current white fly epidemic) had sent out roots in search of water over 60 feet and managed to break open our main drain line going to the city drain. …

Today was a great day for me. I was a little blue after reading Peachy's post nevertheless I ventured into the garden armed with a shovel in one hand and an iPod in the other and planted three Joey's (altifrons), a Pelagodoxa henryana, Calyptrocalyx elegans (albertisianus still has to wait), Chamaerops humilis "cerifera", Manicaria saccifera, along with some other stuff: pandanus, traveller palm, Crinum lilies. It was a perfect day and I wanted to send forth some uplifting news to the forum especially after this winter! Now, if it'll only rain! Peter

Parajubea Cocoides Issue
by sodak- 12 replies

Hi, Has anyone in California experienced crown rot problems with their parajubeas? I have had one in the ground in San Jose for 20 years and it has been growing beautifully. Now, all of a sudden, instead of spears pushing out of the crown and then opening into leaves, smallish leaves already opened are coming out and they do not look healthy. Do I have a potential crown rot problem, and if so, what can I do? I would hate to lose this beauty. It is the centerpiece of my front garden. Thank you, Michael Fjordback San Jose, CA

Another successful fun year at the annual Pacsoa sale. Getting together with everyone from around the country is always a highlight of the weekend. This year a lot more planning went into the display, the outcome was a larger example of well grown palms and some very rare Cycads that they managed to to get from some very good collectors that enhanced the display. Good job done by Mike, Andy, Daryl, Wes and many others Setting up Steve, new rat pack member, flew up from Sydney with me to help for the weekend "now, what will go in here" Setting up the cycad section Daryl setting up the new successful innovation at the show, a live connection to the Pacsoa web…

for 5 years or so the PRAteam has been occasionally visiting gateway center,a business park near downtown san diego, where someone planted some interesting palms amongst the "usual suspects." probably the most amazing palms here are these three hyophorbes. perfect location: a mile or 2 from the bay,south-facing,nice big white concrete wall reflecting heat. matt 1970 is calling--just to see how you've been.they dont want anything back.they said you keep it. why does everyone always stand in photos, its so overrated. ok,i'll try it just this once.
