Veitchia arecina in SoCal
by John in Andalucia- 16 replies
- 2.6k views
Unsure if I should have grown so many, as Veitchia are not slow. The questions on my mind are.. 1. Should I pot them up in triples? I seem to recall that's quite common for retailing these palms. 2. Should I (can I) wait another year before potting up? These still need the greenhouse IMO, and even 35 triples will take over what little space there is left. 3. Will they adapt and grow adequately in a SoCal climate outdoors? I will have little choice by next year! 4. How will they perform as an indoor palm over here?

Moving a hyophorbe lagenicaulis
by LauraAnu- 4 replies

I moved a hyophorbe lagenicaulis over the weekend and broke some (most) of the roots. Are these finicky palms? Do they respond well to moving? It was only about 1 foot high and I have had it for about 4 years (stunted due to lack of water at previous location I guess). I moved it to a location with more water and shade from about 1:30pm. Let me know your thoughts. I have been giving it about 5 gallons water daily since the move. Laura

Received these Dypsis prestoniana seeds from Toby, they're about ten times smaller than the ones I've been getting from AU on e-bay, a couple of those have germinated over the winter indoors, but they're just above soil, not even open, it'll be interesting to see the difference, How about it Bill, or Jeff or Steve, or one of you guys, am I wasting my time, thanks, Ed

Coconut And Royal Freeze Injury in RGV and FL
by Mr. Coconut Palm- 5 replies
- 1.1k views
Hello everyone, I am curious about the health of coconuts and royals in the Lower Rio Grande Valley and in Florida after this horrible winter we just had. I have a friend who lives in La Feria, just west of Harlingen, and he told me last week that his green Malayans were unprotected and lost all their leaves, but are putting out new spears now. He said that all the unprotected coconuts in his area were either killed or defoliated like his and the royals were hit hard too, but coming back. However, in Brownsville, he noticed that the royals faired better, and that those on the east side of town near the port were almost totally green with very little freeze injury. So …

Can palms "feel"
by newtothis- 28 replies
- 3.3k views
I know this sounds rediculous but consider the source, can trees "feel" when they are close to another plant or structure? If so, is it with roots or leafs? Or do newly planted palms just tilt? I ask because I've planted a number of palms close to a hedge and they are all tilting away from it. The same with one close to the house. The hedge is about the same height as the palm so it's not blocking any sun. The palms that are not planted close to anything are growing straight up.

Foxy Ladies
by JimR- 7 replies
- 1.2k views
Talk of the Foxy Lady Palm (Veitchia x Wodyeti) started me thinking. How cold hardy are these palms? I have seen some mention that they are hardier than Foxtails or V. arecina. Anyone care to opine of the truth of that? What is growth rate like? My V. arecina did not make it through this Winter, although they had been in the ground for 6 years and had 15 ft. of trunk. My much younger and smaller foxtail did survive. I am wondering if the Foxy Lady would be a good substitute for V. arecina. What do y' all think?

Hi All, Especially those who enjoy naming our unknown plants. I think that this palm is now about 5 years old. A botanist (Don Hodel) who visited a couple of years back believed that this was in the genus of Ptychococcus but did not know the species. Does anyone have any idea? Thanks, Jim

The first meeting this year for the Northern CA Palm Society toured two small but great gardens in San Francisco and ended at Flora Grubb Nursery in South San Francisco. I bought a nice Ceroxylon alpinum in a 5 gallon container from the nursery and planted it this evening. Should do well in its new location in partial shade.

Burretiokentia hapala
by richnorm- 19 replies
- 2.2k views
I haven't had this plant too long but it suddenly occurred to me that recurved leaves and somewhat droopy pinnae do not fit the text book descriptions of Burretiokentia hapala. Could this plant be sick or water stressed? Seems to be pushing spear at a reasonable rate for our climate. Any thoughts appreciated. cheers Richard

Our big clump of Areca triandra is flowering. It performed well through the horrible cold winter we had. It is growing under thick tree canopy and only suffered minor burn. It is about 10 ft tall.
