Question re Areca Palms
by Hen74- 17 replies
- 1.6k views
I have a hedge of 6 year old Areca palms. They don't appear to be getting enough water. The spray nozzles aren't getting the job done. Should I change to netafim or poly tube with emitters? Also, need to get them some fertilizer as they are developing more of that school bus yellow color. What's a good fertilizer for Areca palms? Many thanks to any palm expert who can offer help/advice.

I have some B.high-plateau and B.no windows that are about 2 1/2 years old now and I need to decide where to plant them. After searching out some info on these I am none the wiser about them. What are they? What is the official name. Are either possibly B madagascariensis or B.alfredii ? Which will take out tropical full sun? How big will they become ? Any clues to these natural habitat being understory or ridge dwellers or in low wet areas or seasonally dry hot zones ? So who knows something about these? This first pic is of a high plateau. It showed windows from very young. Thanks, Jim

Freezepruf's main ingredient Propylene Glycol
by Axel Amsterdam- 10 replies
- 2.1k views
After reading all the disappointments around spraying freezepruf on palmfronds, i wonder what would happen if palms would be watered during their growing season with the main ingredient of freeze pruf: propylene glycol. PG is an environmentally friendly form of antifreeze. There are reports that suggest that PG actually enhances planth growth when applied to the roots. I have no doubt that the inventors of freezepruf thought about this possibility but i have never read any reports on it. Maybe it could add an extra few degrees of hardiness when palms take up PG and distribute it through the cells of the meristem and fronds? Anyone/any scientists around here with ideas…

Mule palm trunks green verses brown
by Palm crazy- 20 replies

Hi all, was wondering, Has anyone notice a difference in appearance with mule trunks from different FL sources? I have two in the ground and both from different growers, one in FL and the other in WA state, both seeds came from FL but they look somewhat different in the trunks. One has very green trunk and the other more brown. Why is that? They are both still very young only a few years old. Thanks I live in WA state.

Cold Zone palm trees/cycads at our Wal-Mart
by Juni Perez- 12 replies
- 4.6k views
A few years ago when I started collecting cold-hardy palm trees and bananas, I had gone to many stores looking for them - Wal-Mart, Home Depot, Lowe's, and local lawn & garden shops). Everyone treated me as if I was hunting unicorns. In particular, Wal-Mart's garden center guy laughed at me. He was a Dominican man who laughed and said "No way can you grow palm trees out here. The queen palms we have die even in-doors. Palm trees are tropical... tropical is warm... warm is NOT Rochester. Get the plastic kind if you want to have them outside." I had no choice but to resort to online sellers. But I won't forget that guy, simple because he took it a step further in laughi…

Photo below is of Dypsis decipiens planted in Huntington Gardens, California back in 2004. At the time I was unconcerned about the common Majesty off to the right. At this time the Dypsis decipiens was a double- no trunk but a nice palm none-the-less.

Last winter's freeze and this chilly spring haven't stopped my little R. borinquena a bit. In the ground now for five winters from a strap leafed liner, you can see March's growth progress is several inches on the new leaf and it grew 1 1/2 inches in January (growth line is higher up and not in picture). I'm looking forward to a explosive growth this summer now that there's a little girth to the trunk. Chilly March's growth. Give me some trunk! A little rough looking after a freezing winter but starting to "wake up".

I Took Peachy's Advice
by Jim in Los Altos- 26 replies
- 1.2k views
After it being confirmed in another post that my potted pinnate palm is indeed an Archontophoenix, I decided to plant it on the advice of Peachy who says it'll grow a lot faster in the ground. I'm experimenting with it, though. I've planted it right adjacent to my koi pond in a wet bog area that never dries out and the soil is shallow with solid rock 18 inches down. I want to see if roots from the palm will make their way into the pond itself. Many of the plants adjacent to the pond have extensive root systems growing into the pond water and it's wild to see some form into thick matting under water. What are anybody's thoughts? Archys love water. Will January 50…

Need Pseudophoenix ID
by Walter John- 6 replies
Hi, we mentioned this in the Pallara outing thread and I thought I would give it's own thread as the owners Will and Margaret of the Pallara nursery gardens really want some help to ID this palm. We're hoping those from the land of Pseudophoenix can help out here. Photos so far I think I might have another to add, I'll check later. Thanks for any assistance.

While I was at the Nursery this morning I heard some screaming coming from the shade house...What I discovered was disturbing...So I took some pictures so I could share... There was scale from the base to tips of the leaves...these bugs were feasting on these kentia...It seems that Kentia are more prone to scale than others...Is that true?

Hey, isn't the Rio biennial going on this week? I know that I am not on Palmtalk as much as previously but I thought that I would have heard something from an attendee by now. In Costa Rica PalmTalkers were lining up each evening and morning for the PCs to get their daily fixes and some could not resist saying hello. I hope that this is not like Vegas! Holler at your pals. Let us know how much fun we are missing. Talk lots of photos and at the first opportunity - POST! Robert

One of the things I love about gardening is all the unique tastes and styles. I spent the last week in LA for the holidays and snapped a few pics while walking my dog to remind me of home and how good we have it in LA. The area gets 100+ dry heat during summers, santa ana winds during fall, adobe clay soil w/ gophers as the main pest. Standouts in the neighborhood: This house has the only triangle palms in the neighborhood. Caryota and foxtail in between some queens Nice mix of common cycads

I have a T fortunei that I planted back in 2002 that has come into flower and produced fully formed seeds. The thing is Trachy's are meant to be dioecious needing a male and a female to procreate. There is not another Trachy for miles in my neighbourhood. What do you think has happened? Who's your Daddy Momma???????? Best regards Tyrone

Winter of 2010 Pleasant Surprises
by _Keith- 6 replies

Winter of 2010 was tough. Three nights in a row right at 20 degrees, and more than I cared to count in the upper 20s. There were many losses, but still, even in this bad spring drought, there are a few surprises out there. Non of these has any protection at all. Total exposure. Palms My largest P. robellini is pushing a new spear. I had written it off. P. reclinata is pushing a new spear. My smallest Mule Palm, which had a spear pull, is pushing a new spear. Arenga engleri is pushing several new spears Non-palms Erythrina christa-galli is returning from the roots. Silk floss tree is sprouting at the 2 foot level. Varigated Lemon is returni…

Need ID On This Pinnate Palm
by Jim in Los Altos- 9 replies
Hope someone can ID this palm. Actually, I'm sure one or more of you can because I think it's probably fairly common. I bought it three years ago a a big box store and it was labelled Areca cetachu and had two trunks at the time. One trunk died in the 2007 freeze but the other faired well and has grown steadily. I can't grow any Areca in any microclimate in my yard since they rot during our damp cool winters but this one never stops growing, albeit slowly. What is it?
