It has been many years since our current terms of service were updated. Yes, I am referring to that fine print most of us decline to read. The good news is there is exactly one additional sentence and it is just intended to streamline the registration procedures and membership management for our free level IPS membership. Here it is: Registration on PalmTalk.org without an existing membership in our society will constitute joining our society at a free membership level with associated benefits. In appreciation for your attention I will share a palm photo from my farm. Pigafetta , AKA the Black Wanga Palm

new house, neglected palms
by asimegusta- 1 follower

Hello palme talkers. We just moved into to a new home a month ago that has multiple palms around the yard. The previous owner left the whole yard to fend for itself for many years. Besides the overgrowth in general, some palms are looking bedraggled. In particular a multi trunk palm, not taller than the eves, seems quite frazzled. I have laid down palm fertilizer at the base of the trunks. The pictures show the crown of the trunk which seems to be struggling , the other crowns are looking better. Now I am wondering if I should remove some dead stuff or just wait and see. Any ideas would be appreciated. I donnot know the name of the palm variety.

sabal causiarum shriveling up

I posted this in potted palms, but I'm going to try again here because it's an emergency, and I don't know what to do next. I let it sit in water for 30 minutes or so the other day, and it just didn't bounce back, but luckily my other one did. This one isn't bouncing back, and it's starting to fade in color. I'm so worried about it. I don't know if it's ready to be planted out because they both have roots coming out of the bottoms and have been in these bags for 2 years now, I think. I was going to plant them anyway this year, but I don't know if I should just plant it out if that would help or not.

Wanted to share my Medjool hobby orchard / soon to be tissues culture. I have 100 8 year old Medjool palms (Phoenix dactylifera) I bought from a 100 year old colony in Coachella Valley that produce lots of fruit. They fruited this year but I did not pollinate and will do coming year. Have them planted around the property and in rows 25ft apart so the fronds do not touch with 1in Polyethylene drip line ran and a inline EZ flow for fertilization. My goal is to start doing tissue culture and selling palms by mail. I'm also growing Medjool ornamental palms from seed and have 500 two year old's in 1 gallon pots that I will move to 3 gallons i…

New member, but have been getting some good info from everyone on this site for a while. Started getting some palms a few years back and got inspired to start a bigger garden. In DeBary FL, about 30 miles north of Orlando. Progress so far: 2 B. Alfredii, one on the left planted from a 15g in June 2022, other went in this week from a 25g. Archontophoenix Cunninghamiana planted from a 7g in November 2021. Side yard has a couple of flamethrowers, Chambeyronia Oliviformis, another king palm, Lanonia Dasyantha, Caryota Obtusa, Chamaedorea Radicalis x Cataractarum (most likely) and Chamaedorea Microspadix. Plenty of other tropicals mixed in, big fan of Plumerias.…

majesty palm dying
by 2palm- 5 replies

this palm was in the sale rack at lowes when i bought it and it has never recovered the little care that it was given there. it was fine during winter but when we put it outside is went yellow and has started to lean. it has no root rot, it has been fertilized recently, I've checked there isn't fungus, its just not wanting to live. i have already talked about this one a few times and i have not been able to narrow it down to something. im just about to give up with this one. my relatives that have a farm say i should plant it in the ground but im not sure if that will work.

Overwatered Phoenix Canariensis?
by Feng- 16 replies

Hi palm people, I just planted this Phoenix Canariensis in the ground about 2 weeks ago and I have been giving it a LOT of water. I’ve noticed that the leaves are becoming misaligned. Is this because the excess water is causing the frond to become engorged and is this healthy? thanks

Coconut rhinoceros beetle

I have two royals that have been in the ground around 22 years. I treated the first today for Coconut rhinoceros beetle prevention (I hope). with Imicide capsules containing 3 mg each. Hope I drilled deep enough for the liquid to get absorbed and taken up to the crown. Will probably do the next tomorrow as I'm fighting a hernia and bending over hurts. The cost for 24 capsules was $175.95 plus tax. I have 7 pritchardias which will also need treatment. At this price I sure hope I save these. There are at least 16 more large palms, 22 year old palms but so far I don't see damage The one on the right is a Roystonea regia and the one on the left is Roystonea olerac…

New house, first palm!
by ahosey01- 9 replies

I planted the first palm at my new house today. It was a 45 gallon monster with about 3 foot of trunk that had wayyy outgrown its container. Phoenix sylvestris is the species. probably weighed 500lbs. That pygmy palm was there from the builder and is getting ripped out to install a patio, so I don't count it. Edit: Photo working now!

Opinions on Butia
by Gville Palms- 1 follower

First of all, I know there have been many different threads on identifying Butia varieties and I have gone through many of them (all that I can find) but they have not really brought me any closer to an answer regarding a question I have about a Butia that I own. I bought this three years ago as a three gallon from either a Home Depot or a Lowe’s as just a cheapo plant for my side yard - it was maybe 25 bucks but looked nice. It was of course labeled as a pindo palm (Butia Capitata). Anyways, it grows and looks nothing like the other butias that I have. Within a matter of a couple years it has easily tripled in size, the trunk seems to be much more narrow than m…

I picked up the fallen seeds under the Syagrus amara tree and cleaned the seeds. I found that the shape of the seeds was different. Makes me very surprised. I found more than 95% will have the seed shape on the left side of the picture. From what I've searched data on the internet, I've found that the correct shape for Syagrus amara seeds should be the one on the right of my picture. Does anyone have any advice or have found similar characteristics with the Sysgrus amara species? Thank you.

So it’s been 10 months in red solo cups, and all of the Dypsis lafazamanga seedlings and little fragments from floribunda made it. Not too much babying or coddling. Just some fertilizer and water and a fair amount of direct sun. Some variability. I’m about to pot-up. Should I put 2-3 to a bigger pot or leave it at 1, and expect a lot of clumping in the future anyways? Don’t know what to expect in the future. April 29th 2021… 6 seedlings and +3 rando fragments…. Today…. The king of the seedlings….
