Seedlings: ID mystery and borsigs
by Frond-friend42- 2 replies

Ok. The one at left was supposed to be ceroxylon, but the shape of the seed made me think it was t. fortunei . Then these caryota- looking ears popped out. Any ideas? Maybe C. mitis I'm guessing. The sprouts at the left I'm excited about. You can see yellow stems and orange spots of P. borsigianum. Anyone care for these seedlings who can provide care tips. I separated some into individual pots early and many died off. I used a lot of bark and leca (pal Meir style) and have kept them sheltered from the sun in a warm spot...and less than half survived with none of them thriving. I'm going to go for a wetter mix this time but anybody have any soil-tips for these …

Finally Phoenix Roebelenii
by ZPalms- 2 replies

Finally after 5 months of watering this pot every other day, I finally have 2 sprouts out of 52 and the others must not be far behind! I'm excited to finally see them after so long I'm gonna update their growth and progress here overtime. I do have a question though, when should I start to bring these seedlings in since it's fall now and it's gonna get chilly eventually, Should they be fine as long as it doesn't reach 30F right? or maybe mid 40s since their so tiny?

Liptstick Palm issues

My large lipstick palm doesn’t look healthy. It may have been too much direct sunlight but I also noticed some small spots under the leaves. Seems like tiny black lines in the grooves. Any idea what this is or if it’s bad for the palm?

Hello! I am an avid houseplant keeper and adore keeping indoor potted trees (ficus, bonsai, and fruit trees mainly), but I have never had a palm tree before. However, my coworker was at a greenhouse the other day and was offered several free houseplants, all in various stages of death. Some could be saved and others, unfortunately were too far gone. One of the plants given was a lovely Mexican Fan Palm (Washingtonia robusta) in a crumbling ceramic pot. My coworker brought all the plants to the office and I have been attempting at reviving each of them, but my palm knowledge is not very deep. I have been doing a bit of research and can't quite decide if it was …

Help with a Transplanted Potted Sabal Palm :)
by Another_Conquistador- 9 replies

I already have a Majesty and Cat Palm that have been doing great so I’m familiar with the beginner species inside. I’m from South Florida and moved to West Georgia and I’m very common with Sabal Palms, their care, flowering, fruit, et cetera. But I’m not familiar with potting and am told it’s very difficult. I got back from a trip to Savannah & Tybee Island, and I wanted to come back with a Sabal Palm. I was walking in Bonaventure Cemetery, and some workers cleaning around a Mausoleum pulled one up roots and all so I took it. I’m enclosing a photograph of it in my car lol It’s older obviously as it has a trunk, it seemed a little dry so I have it in a t…

Hey Guys, My Christmas Palm seedlings are 10 months old and starting a 5th Frond. The bottom or first Frond is turning yellow. The first Fronds on the other plants are starting to brown up on the edges, is this normal at this stage? or is there something going on? Thanks

Removing soil around the rootball of a Roebelenii
by Palmfarmer- 1 follower

i have 3 fot Roebelenii that was doing fantastic outdoors. However it started deceling recently (new leaf tips started getting slightly yellow and it needed constant watering to not have the fronds hang) I think because it was so rootbound and the soil have gotton very compacted around the rootball. It had to be broken out of the pot. I Have bought a new pot for it that is around 25% bigger. I am wondering if the best thing to do is try and remove a good chunk of the bad soil around the rootball using a waterhose before replanting it in the bigger pot as it might not only have the issue of compaction, but buildup from bad things in the water & syntetic …

Black spots on kentia
by HD3223- 2 replies
I've recently purchased a potted Kentia palm, overall it seems fairly jealthy. Possibly some potassium deficiency? Some of the lower leaves are a bit of a mottled colour. What's concerning me though is the sudden appearance of these tiny black dots on the stem. They start off looking like a bruise and then turn black, they aren't insects as I can't scrape them off. I've tried a fungicide but it looks a bit worse. Any ideas? https://ibb.co/4jXCs1N

Pot Bound Date Palm- What Do I Do?!
by Lynsey- 4 replies
Hi all, I have a seriously pot bound date palm. I have a bigger pot to repot it into but I would have to cut off a lot of the roots. Everything I read seems to say don't cut the roots but I don't think I have a choice. The palm seems to be healthy but the roots just keep on growing! What should I do? Would cutting the roots off be a death sentence for my palm?! Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Okay is it bad?

Hi all, these are my Washingtonia seedlings sprouted 50 days ago. I've got dozens of them and Phoenix D. They were doing fine, but now I see some white mold/fungus/mealybugs. Should I treat it or is it fine and just some seedling part? This white pieces are reaaaly small. For the first time I noticed them on a date and scraped them off with a metal ruler. Now this date has been clean for a week, but on many other seedlings I see white dots. Seeds were cleaned with H2O2 at the beginning, no mold mentioned while germinating. These seedling get 1 hour sunglight a day. Some of them have slowed down a lot in the last week (it was 5 millimeters a day, it became 1-2), but…

Separating Palm Clumps
by Born- 3 replies
I just received my Livistona Chinesis. I placed it in the shower for a wash and insecticidal soap. It will be in isolation for 2 weeks. My question to my Palm Pals: There are six clumps of the Livistona Chinesis. This Palm is an independent palm and does not naturally grow in large clumps. I would like to divide each tree individually and independently to have six trees. My separating technique would be as usual; clear out all the soil, rinse roots, untangle, and plant in small individual potters with a good drainage soil mix consisting of potting soil, perlite, and chip bark. Thoughts?

Good Afternoon Friends, I just had a quick question: The DC area is experiencing temperatures of 50-60 F during the day but it dips down to near below freezing at night 34-43F. Is it okay if I leave my potted robustas and trachys outside at night, they are all about 10 months old? I have been leaving them outside but taking them in at night.

Neglect during winter months indoors
by Rickybobby- 0 replies

Does this work? I have a friend I have him palms. He doesn’t care and forgets. However his palms grow better than mine. I try this. So I’ve been busy with a reef tank. Been neglecting the palms. Either too much water or not enough. Doesn’t work. Temp and light consistent. The solution is. Don’t grow 300 seedlings at once. It’s very hard to meet the needs of everyone at the same time. But the strong will survive!

HELP ME PLEASE! DYING WASHINGTONIA BABY!
by jruffd13- 6 replies

Good Morning to all my Palm friends, This is "Mateo"Ruffner, he is a Washingtonia Robusta, he was born with a bunch of Robustas that I got from seed at the Jupiter Inlet in Florida. He was growing really well this summer outside then I put him indoors in the winter. On 12/1 I noticed he wasn't shooting up a new frond and there were a TON of little red bugs on the plant, I killed them with neem oil (but it seems like the neem was killing it and maybe making the leaves yellow). I think it was root rot because it wasn't getting enough drainage, (I was an idiot and put a lot of perlite at the bottom of the pot thinking it would help drainage but it blocked the water…
