by PatPalm- 4 replies

Hello palmtalk I have a kentia palm that started to exhibit yellow spotting I water once a week with Florida tap water. Soil Moisture detector reads on the dryer side. House is 70-85 F, 55-70 RH. Gets plenty of light from south facing window It did have spider mites once but I cleaned them all off i have two other kentia palms that aren’t showing these signs Any idea what this could be? I’ve read it could be bacterial.

New majesty palm - what am I doing wrong?

Hi there! I bought a majesty palm two weeks ago from a local nursery. A few days ago, I noticed that it was starting to lean (away from the sun, which is weird)...it's almost like the fronds can't support their weight? Now a couple of the bottom fronds look sick - I know this can happen, but I'm worried that I am doing something wrong. Does it look underwatered? I mist it daily to help with humidity until it is warm enough to sit outside. I am scared of overwatering it, and I'm just not sure what's going on...I know they can be tricky to please indoors, so I'm hoping that someone might have some specific tips to help! Can I try to stake it to help adjust the weird lean? T…

Kentia not doing well! Help!
by Ben C- 4 replies

Hello - I'm a new member and this is my first post. I have two beautiful kentia palms in my living room and one has started dying. I have recently repotted it and added systemic granules. It has plenty of water, but I don't think it's too much... could be wrong though. Now there's some black/grey appearing on the leaves. Photos attached. Can anyone help diagnose? Thanks! Though not a true palm, I thought I would share my mom's quite impressive Beaucarnea recurvata. She grows it indoors (used to move it out for the warmer months when it was smaller) in southeastern North Carolina. It is now up to about 7 feet!

We are new to potted Palms as we have focused on organic gardening in the yard up until now. We put in a hot tub and added some potted palms for ambiance. Suddenly all of us, especially me, are getting bitten a lot by something. Based upon anecdotal bites happening when seeing an ant on one of us and confirming what an ant bite looks like online, we are confident these are some sort of ant. I noticed tiny ants in the area (abnormally small for the typical ant around here in SoCal) and also flying ants here and there. The only thing I can think of is these ants appeared after we brought home the clearance Pygmy palm from Lowe’s (it was in mediocre shape and I’ve brought it…

Ponytail Palm in Trouble...
by shahram0- 2 replies
We've had a ponytail palm for over a year. The fronds regularly turn brown, starting at the tip, and then entirely. This has been going on since we got the plant as a gift. The soil is Miracle-Gro. We only water when the soil is dry (we use a houseplant water meter to test). The soil is dry every 10 days or so (I know that is less than the recommended watering schedule). I've tried watering less, but that only seems to increase the browning. I'm wondering if I'm watering too little (despite the ponytail general recommendation)? Sure would appreciate some advice... Thanks,

Hello lovely Palmtalk denizens, I was very excited to bring home my first palm, a Kenita I got from a local nursery, 5 days ago. I'm in Flagstaff AZ and it gets very cold here, and we've had a particularly brutal winter so I thought this palm looking as bit yellow was okay. But I brought her home and her fronds have gotten increasingly crinkled up. Is there something I could be doing better? I watered her once, have misted her every other day, and have had the humidifier running almost 24/7 too. Is it just a bit too cold in my office maybe? Thanks very much in advance to any help or advice you could offer for me! I hope to get one or two more palms in time…

Rhapis humilis - leaves refuse to open
by LivistonaFan- 1 reply

I bought this Rhapis humilis in December 2018 and tried since to acclimate it to partial sun (from April to October, in winter it's indoors), which is why it may look a little rough. The biggest stem is slowly starting to push more compact fronds which is great, but one sucker hasn't opened its spears for about a year. What could cause this? December 2018: now:

What type of Archonto are these?

I swung by Uncle Jutty’s today and they had an Archonto triplet for sale that I’d noticed a few months ago. I’m pretty sure they’re stunted just by looking at them, but also because they had seriously outgrown their pot to the point their upper roots weren’t even covered anymore and there was a huge mass of roots under the pot. I’ve since hosed off a good bit of the old soil they had on the roots, pruned off some less-than-stellar-looking fronds, and planted in a 2:1:1 mix of pine bark, MG palm soil, and perlite in a 25 G pot. I actually cut off the smallest of the triplet too because it was SERIOUSLY stunted and I figured the two remaining would do much better without a …

Dypsis cabadae slow growth problem
by Davidl- 0 replies

I have some Dypsis cabadae in one gallon pots for approximately three years. They seem very slow growing having only produced one frond in a year. Some of the new fronds are stunted similar to boron deficiency. I have them in some miracle grow potting soil with a little sand added to keep the pot from falling over. I water them everyday when they don’t get rain and they are in partial sun and color is dark green. I fertilized three times this year but nothing has gotten better with them. Any suggestions?

Opinions on home mixed potting soil

I’ve been trying out some different potting soils for various palms I’m growing. I dont have much experience so I wanted to see if anyone had an opinion on what I’m using. The native soil in my yard is a mixture of coarse sand, sugar sand and coquina shells. I was just mixing 50/50 with store bought MG cactus/palm soil and native. It drains ok but its kind of spongy and probably holds a little too much water. My new mix is: 6 scoops of native 2 scoops of perlite 2 of peat moss 2 of the MG palm stuff and 2 of some bagged up composty, humis, bat guano stuff. Should I add or subtract anything? Change ratios? Thanks!

I have a 3 yrs old Ravanea Lakatra , the new leaves grow without the stem, the stem isn’t growing at all. Is this related to nutrient deficiency or other? I have seen the same in my Huge Licualas while the stems are normally much longer ??? I really appreciate some knowledge to help me out. Thank you . Attaching pics.

Identification request

Hello! I have two that need identification. The second was incorrectly labelled as a majesty, but I am suspecting it’s a Cataractarum. The first is so juvenile and the pot was unlabelled that I have no idea. Possibly a Lutescens? (but I am begging for a howea forestinia!). Thanks for the help!

Cat Palms Not Healthy

Looking for some advice on these CAT palms in Fort Myers Florida. They are in self draining pots and have not been manually watered since the rainy season. I fear that they are not getting enough water as they have drain holes, I placed rock at the bottom of these and there really isn't a ton of space for dirt. Although there is a water basin at the bottom that holds spare water. They get direct afternoon sun, maybe 4-5 hours. They also took on some salt water during H.IAN last year. I am finally getting around to fixing my sprinkler system so they can be watered on a schedule. I am thinking I should over water and see how it goes... The less burnt-looking one …

I am debating whether my Altifrons is best in a wider slightly taller pot or rather deeper and a bit wider ? She is a big lady and my treasure. She is sitting in a 1 Gallon and looks happy. But upper roots are visible on toplayer. Any tips from owners growing them in pots outside are appreciated!! See picture
