Here is the stunning Rhapis palm that I take care of inside the store I work for when Im not traveling. It gets lots of ambient light and amazing air circulation. Its hard to get a decent photo without climbing on the fridge as my office is on the other side of the building, but photos from below are just as nice: General Rhapis appreciation thread

Majesty droopy after repotting
by Eric Thompson- 13 replies

Just recently split up 3 majesty’s from same pot into their own pots. I was as easy as I could be on the roots.. all new soil and parked in front of a large window. 3 days later and they are looking a darker green, the fronds are droopy and all seem to be twisting. Is this just classic shock or did i kill these things?

Washingtonia Robusta in pot- Tips/Tap Root, Watering 1 2

Hello everyone! Its been a little while since I've been on PT. I've got a few questions about Tap Roots and watering my Washingtonia Robusta "Seedling". Not sure if you'd still call it a Seedling though. Haha. I've kept my small little W.Robusta in my West/South-West facing bay window for many months now (since August 2015). Its done quite well, and has not complained. Its thrived this winter even with our often times limited sunlight duration (NW Ohio). Since August its put out 2 large leaves, and another has begun in the center. After arriving here from Nevada I potted it in a Powerade bottle. And there its been since. Its been doing phenomenal in my book. I would…

I've finally ordered an indoor palm I've always wanted called Licuala grandis, does anyone have any tips on growing this one correctly? Potting media? Lighting? Humidity? I can put it in my sunny bathroom with high humidity if it will be happy in there. Not a ton of growing info I could find. Thank you

Livistona dies

Hi, everyone. I've had Livistona Rotundifolia indoors for about 6 years. And now it started dying for unknown reason. The leaves become dark brown starting from its tips and die very quickly. Maybe it's a virus disease (like lethal yellowing)? Who knows how it can be stopped?

Licuala Ramsayi soil & water preferences 1 2
by David_Sweden- 1 follower

My main question would be: For palms that normally live in swamps (of which I have Licuala Ramsayi, Licuala Peltata var Sumawongii and a Lipstick Palm), I would assume they are impossible to overwater and can stand permanently with the whole root soaked in water and liking it, and don't care about the aeration of soil, so that e g clay or densely packed peat would work great, since they (at least the Licualas) have aerial roots, which I assume supply the root system with oxygen properly even if the whole soil is under water? However I found two ten year old threads here and here with clear indications the do NOT like being permanently soaked in water, and even are ra…

After many years of longingly running through the list of palm species at Floribunda, somewhere around April of this year I finally decided it was time to place an order at Jeff an Suchin’s amazing company. I had read so much about it and only good things, so this was going to be the place. On my own I couldn’t reach the minimum order for foreign (non-US) of 300 USD so I placed an appeal on a Dutch / Belgian forum for exotic plant “freaks”, like myself, to join in with the order. This way we could also make the transportation, phyto-certificate, custom/tax costs, and all that a bit more affordable if we would just split the costs. It didn’t take very long before the fir…

How do your palms do in clay pots? 1 2
by Brad Mondel- 1 follower

I have several palms in clay pots but I'm worried that the fluctuations in moisture and temperature will stress out the palms. Clay pots are thirsty and drink a lot of moisture from the potting mix. Do you grow in clay pots? How do your palms do if you use them?

Everyone got fed with filtered water, a drop of Super thrive, and 1/3 strength Alaska Fish Emuslion today minus the seed pots. They got water and positive reinforcement. L. Chinesis, D. Lutescenens, c. Cataractarum, Queen Palm, 2 Majesties, a C. Macrocarpa that I'm not sure is still alive, and W. Robusta that I finally took the Xmas lights off of. Probably gonna restring the Xmas lights tonight just because I'm bored.

Self-watering pots
by David_Sweden- 3 replies

It seems to me a special version of self-watering pots should be able to solve three problems, especially for big palms: To have to water very frequently, to get even moisture (neither wet nor dry spots), and to provide easy means for leaching. And maybe wouldn't have to pot up as much. Ordinary self-watering pots (aka "sub-irrigated planters") don't have these benefits though. This is how they seem to work (free pic from Wikipedia): Basically water tank placed under soil, with some kind of wick to suck water up to soil by capillary action. Some of the most commonly available commerical ones are GrowBox, EarthBox and Ollie Plants Sippers, which all seem to…

Liquid fertilizer?

I've read many posts about using "liquid fertilizer" so was wondering what is meant by that. Fish Emulsion? dry granular like Miracle Grow dissolved in water? or is there a liquid premix specific for palm trees. Insight would be helpful.

Transporting rather big potted palm trees
by David_Sweden- 14 replies

We are moving, and my palms have to go for a 3 hour car ride to the new place. I wonder what tips you might have to get them there without damage. The smaller ones I plan to take standing up, but two of them are about as tall as me and have to lie down. I think I'll wrap a plastic bag around the pot and tape it close to the soil surface so that the soil can't move about much, at least for the ones lying down. And I think I will cover all of them with big plastic bags, to protect against bugs etc and keep the humidity high and eliminate cold drafts of wind, it may well be 10-15C (50-60F) outdoors. As long as it's only for a few hours I don't think I'll have to worry ab…

Hi, I'm new to the forum and gardening. My brother gave me two beautiful healthy majestic palms to plant inside the house - both were apparently grown in the shade. I repotted them in large 21" inch pots using organic soil and for drainage, about 3" of cubed non-absorbent packing materials. On of them is placed next to my sliding glass door (with good indirect light and the other, which is faring much better, is in a front room with much less light (shown in the small first photo) The one near the light (the next three photos) started dying immediately. I cannot tell if I am overwatering it (because I have yellowed leaves on the bottom) or underwatering it (because I…

Pot Size vs Palm Size & Growth
by Funkthulhu- 10 replies

It is springtime, and a man's fancy turns towards thoughts of repotting his container ranch... Let's be straight here, I'm in Nebraska, I have some "big" palm species creeping past the juvenile stage. . . and my ceilings are only 8 feet high right now. Container Ranchers, how do you decide how big of a pot you will use for each of your species. Assuming everything is deep enough for tap-roots and whatnot, does the pot size help or hinder the size of your palm? In my most recent post I was talking about a potentially sick Veitchia, that little guy is getting a growth spurt right now. Save for the freezing winters, if it were outside it has the potential to get f…

Why does my Parlor Palm have pale leaves?
by SunnySoCal- 1 follower

Having trouble figuring out the problem; there are also some brown spots, and not just on the tips- some of them are in the middle of the leaves. Really worried about mites, though it could also be because of a vent (which I moved it away from recently), or because our tap water has lots of lime. I mist it daily. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Neem oil or Hydrogen peroxide

I have about 18 seedlings that I have brought in for the winter and I am noticing an increasing amount of fungus gnats crawling around in the soil. I am trying to avoid scraping the top layer of soil off and adding sand because some of these palms are just beginning to develop roots. I was wondering if I should saturate the soil with a Neem oil mix or Hydrogen peroxide. I have mostly Needles, Trachy F, Trachy W, and Sabal Palmettos under a grow light in 14" cones. Thank you!

19yo Potted Coconut

I brought my coconut outside for its annual shower! It gets dusty indoors here in Phoenix, AZ. This is my pride and joy. This palm is where my screen name comes from. I bought it from Home Depot in the summer of 2000. It's been moved around the valley from house to apartment back to house a total of 7 times. It gets so neglected I really have no idea what's keeping it alive. It's never been fertilized with anything but dirty aquarium water. I only started doing that in the past 4 years. It's never been repotted. I just fill in the top with new soil when it gets low. It sat in a dark apartment for a few years. It's almost always parked under an AC vent. It currently sits …

Hey everyone! New to the forum and hoping to get some help keeping my plants healthy I purchased a Bangalow Palm recently from a large wholesaler and it seemed pretty healthy at the time. A month on and I believe it may have some sort of pest infection or similar, but I'm also concerned the soil quality is poor and it may need changing. Can you guys help me with what to do to ensure he lives a long and happy life indoors? Symptoms(pictures attached) - browning fronds - fronds losing colour (becoming splotchy) and yellowing - white flecks on some leaves Nb: it is kept indoors in a well lit room Tha…

New Windmill Palm
by TedNoah1- 27 replies

Hello! I have a baby Chinese windmill palm being delivered to me this week. I will be putting it in a rather large pot outside. At the moment, I’m leasing my home and don’t own it. We aren’t allowed to plant trees of any size. I live in Chesapeake, Virginia (the greater Virginia Beach region), zone 8A. Will the tree be safe outside during the winter? I see these palms all over the place in Virginia. They seem to be very popular where I live. However, I’ve yet to see one in a pot, most are in the ground and growing quite large! Any tips/advice welcome! :-)
