Carpentaria acuminata indoors
by LivistonaFan- 3 replies

I received this palm two weeks ago and it has grown about 4" of spear since then (only indoors). I ordered this as a substitute for an Areca triandra which never arrived as the seller sent me an Arenga . I know the Carpentaria might be too light-needy indoors, but I just like this Australian native . Does it look healthy to you (aside from the cracks in the leaves)?

Aloe Hercules
by Jonah B- 26 replies

Hello! New to this..I just recently bought a beautiful 5 gallon aloe hercules. I would love for it to thrive and not kill it lol. What brand soil do you suggest I use for it? I plan to keep it in a pot for now. I've heard mixed reviews about the cactus and palm mix from Kellogs which I have. I've also heard it's best to add pumice or perlite to the mix. Also can anyone give me advice on which size pot to get? how often to water and best place to let it hang out outside? Thanks!

Help me choose potting media
by Missi- 8 replies

Please visit this link and help me choose the best media and size of media for potting tropical understory palms (keeping good drainage and proper pH in mind): https://www.repotme.com/orchid-media/index.html There are so many types of bark, clay, stone (granite, pumice), coconut husks, coconut chips, coconut coir it boggles my mind. Would moss or charcoal within the mix be beneficial to palms or are those mainly for growing orchids? I'm tired of trying "this" and "that" so I'd like to get a good formula down.

Washingtonia Robusta

Hi guys, just thought I'd show you my garden centre rescue palm. Found this in between Christmas trees in December in the local garden centre chain store. Cost me £2.50, so that's $3.60! It flies! Put out two full leaves so far with two more nearly out. Will try planting out in the spring but won't survive a bad winter here without an awful lot of protection.

Repotting and changing soil type for Rhopalostylis Baueri
by David_Sweden- 11 replies
- 1.8k views
I just got a rather big (5' incl pot) Rhopalostylis Baueri and it is in a quite small pot as you can see, and it is rather rootbound: lots of root especially in the bottom but not enough to deform or crack the plastic pot, and not sticking out of the draining holes almost at all. I'm thinking I could repot it now or wait until next spring. I had almost decided to wait 1 year but there's one more reason to not wait: The soil mix is very gritty and extremely well draining, I've read about this type of soil before, and now that I see it I don't like it. Apparently the reason for choosing this is that it should be virtually impossible to overwater. A major downside is that …

Grow bags

Has anyone used these type of grow bags to grow palms ? I have thought about using them to put climate tender palms in the ground then dig them back up before the first cold snap. Thinking i can enjoy the palm in the landscape instead of the container ranch. https://www.greenhousemegastore.com/containers-trays/bags-pouches/root-pouch-grey-fabric-pot-3-4-year?returnurl=%2fcontainers-trays%2fbags-pouches%2f With a regular nursery pot im afraid roots could possibly get thru the drain holes, so when i pull the palm back out , it could get root damage and possible death. Just throwing this out as an idea, anyone's opionion or pros and cons would be appreciated…

Hello again, I have this potted washingtonia (please tell me if it’s robusta or filifera) which I bought about 1 month ago. I water it once per week, after the soil is dry on the surface, but no sign of growing, absolutely no movement. Is it something normal? Should I worry or do something to keep it happy?

Potting mix breakdown
by David_Sweden- 19 replies
- 1.8k views
Can anyone describe what a potting mix looks like once it starts to break down? Pics would be nice but also a description: Does most of it end up as small particles (like dust) that is washed out, or is it mostly fiber-like slimy stuff? does it usually happen very quickly or over several years? I read that soilless media of peat moss, bark or coir typically breaks down after 2-4 years, bark usually lasting the longest but when i starts to break down it can go fast, and coir 2nd longest. For peat there is the von Post scale, which describes the most broken down stages as H10 "No discernible plant structure; when squeezed, it all escapes between the fingers", H9 "…

Ptychosperma macarthurii in Pot
by Pal Meir- 2 replies

Ptychosperma macarthurii germinated from seed in *1986; the seed came from a palm of Singapore Botanical Garden. @GrumpyGrower The first two photos (2003 & 2006) show the palm in a small Ø20xH20cm pot; the 3rd one (sunburnt) in a Ø24xH24cm (?) pot. It was given away to a zoological garden in 2008. The last photo might be the parent tree (?).

Hola everyone. I am new to the board so forgive me if I don’t yet know my way around efficiently. Anywho I bought myself a Cyrtostachys renda without really understanding palms whatsoever and am not sure if it’s doing well. Transplanted it from a 5 gallon garden bag to a 9-10 gallon pot. Used a mixture of local dirt from the mangrove close to me and mixed it with worm castings 50/50 of my own making, all materials organic sources. I have it in a NE corner with lots of indirect light through out the day and 3 hours of direct sun early morning. The newest palm frond was showing as a 10 inch spike when I brought her home 2 months ago. In that time the new frond has come up …

I'm looking for some unusual ideas for an inside Palm. There won't be a huge amount of natural light but enough to make do. I already have the following indoors: Majesty Coconut Kentia Cat Areca Any other ideas on what I could plant indoors? I might add some UV lights to make it possible. I'm looking for something you wouldn't normally see grown indoors. Thoughts?

I received a young licuala with multiple fronds and trunks about two weeks ago from a nursery that grew them outside in Florida. Seemingly in the past few weeks or so, it looks like all the fronds on one trunk dried up entirely. I'm not a palm expert but it *appears* to there are multiple trunks in one root ball. It came unpotted and I put it in an orchid mix + sandy soil: basically 90% bark + soil in a plastic nursery pot within a cache pot. It sits about 10 feet back from a south facing window, obscured by furniture to avoid direct light, with around 40% household humidity. If you look at the images you can see some of the smaller fronds looking gray/dehydrated an…

Indoor Kentia survival does it happen?

Kentia being listed by many sources as one of the 5 best palms for indoors because ease of care etc I was wondering if there are any members on Palmtalk that keep a Kentia palm indoors year around in Northern climates? I did a search in the "palms in pots" section and read many pages with pictures of Kentia palms succumbing when brought indoors. Anyone with positive stories? if so, what is the care your Kentia receives, placement, how long have you had etc. Personally I've been through like 5/6 No direct light, keeping it dry, keeping it damp, RO water, rain water, bottled water....doesn't make a difference.

Pindo in a pot questions
by newtopalmsMD- 2 followers

I have a pindo (from a big box store last Sept on clearance. ) It was in a 5 gallon pot (or maybe smaller). It's now in a ten gallon pot full of Miracle Gro all purpose potting mix (plus whatever the big box store used in its smaller pot). I have been roundly chastised in other fora for using MG and peat in general. So now that it is time to move it to 15 gallons, what should I use as a medium? Since I live in zone 7a (with a bit of a 6b-ish micro-climate where my palms are planted ) this Pindo will forever be living in a pot, and be moved out of the really cold (into a garage with grow lights) during the winter. Also I have both a 15 inch tall and a 12 inch tall 15…

I recently picked up a cluster (20-25) of howea seedlings and separated them into numerous small pots and decided to take a shot at growing them in leca. I wanted to try out a few different semi-hydro pot/container styles since it's my first time growing these in leca and I wanted to see if some things work better than others. In the picture from left to right we have: -Lechuza deltini mini filled with lechuza pon and topped with leca -White ceramic 4" pot with leca in plastic liner -White ceramic 3" pot with leca in plastic liner -4" terra cotta pot with leca submerged in marble water reservoir -Clear 500ml beaker with pure leca, no plastic…

From Picked Chinese Fan Palm Seed to 14 months of Growing
by orlandozone9b- 4 replies
- 1.7k views
In October of 2021 I picked around 10 very unripe Chinese Fan Palm Seeds from a family members home. I then placed all in a ziplock bag in wet paper towels. I changed the paper towels weekly until 1 sprouted, around 90 days after picking from the tree. I then transplanted the seedling to a small pot, then transplanted to the pot seen in the pictures here. I live in Florida 9b, my question is, from this stage how long should I wait till I plant outside in my yard?

Seedlings and fertilizer

When do you start fertilizing your seedlings? Some say that you have to wait for the palm to repell the seed. I usually start fertilizing my seedlings when the second leaf emerges. I use a highly dilluted fertilizer though (1/4) . Is there a general rule of thumb?
