Anyone expert on PAR LIGHT REQUIREMENTS
by Guest Dave L- 3 replies

I know there are no stupid questions, but I may get close with this one. I have a relatively new all season greenhouse with a variety of palms and tropical plants. I have an automated shade system that can respond to temperature and PAR light levels. When it gets too hot (Now it is set at 80F) the shades close to reduce the heat a few degrees. I attempt (with not great success) to keep the house at 75-80 F degrees day and 60-70 at night. During the day the outside PAR can reach almost 2000. I have researched this subject and I cannot find any source that can tell me if too much PAR is harmful. I know that ideal PAR for growing is between 400-700, but is too much h…

I tried my luck with one this growing season and it's doing ok but is going to need a repot ASAP. If it's just going to croak when I bring it inside I'm curious if it's even worth the time/money for the soil and new pot. Thanks

I'd like to see more of what people are doing in tiny spaces. I don't care if you're growing palms or vegetables or flowers or whatever. I can't be the only one on Palmtalk in an apartment, living off of grow lights and limited space. I've been all over YouTube and seen what can be done. Shameless plug, YouTube.com/dbljzzl

Apollo Heat Mat - I Am New To This!
by PalmTreeDude- 5 replies

Hello! I just got an Apollo heat mat (User knell introduced me to Apollo heat mats.) and it is a simple basic 10 dollar one I ordered from Amazon, it had great reviews. So, how exactly do I use this thing with the baggy method? I want to use the baggy and paper towel method, without growing mold, which almost always happens. How exactly should I go about this? And tips or advice on how to use heat mats for palms will be appreciated!

Archie trouble

Hello I ordered some archies by mailorder, took few weeks or so. I live in cold climate so I have to overwinter my palms indoors under lamps. When they arrived looked mostly okay maybe a bit beaten up but still green. I kept one outside when it was blown over several times by a strong wind gusts but I am sure it did not get any frost-no frost has been recorded in my garden yet. My personal opinion is that they dislike long delivery-being in a dark box for weeks, can it be so? Now I brought them in and one of them looks really bad, leaves drying and so. What can I do to save it? The pot is tiny maybe repot it into bigger one? I have been growing c…

Hey all, I ordered a bunch of archo alex seedlings in the mail and potted them all. They are all under artificial light. Half seem to be doing well and the other half are browning and leaves are getting "crispy" . They are all watered at least once a week. The lights don't heat up and the room is on avg 78 degrees Not sure why half are having issues. Any advice or tips? salvageable or too late? I may need to start over and i want to make sure I get it right if i do.

Archontophoenix alexandrae

Hello. I have an indoor, well-lit area with a height of 5 meters. I had thought of putting a palm tree of this species in a pot, possibly because of its height it would live for many years to reach the ceiling but ... Does this species live well in a pot and indoors without direct sunlight? Thanks.

In the greenhaus. Picked the bright red seeds up from under a nice king palm near the beach in National City, CA two months ago. I thought they would never sprout and turn to gunk in the soil.

Got a PKG of a. Alexandrae seed a year or so ago. 5 of them have done quite well, by my own standards at least. One of them, however, has been putting up increasingly redder new leaves. I've read that this is common while young, especially in cooler spring time, but it's just interesting that one plant would turn out so differently when they have all had identical conditions.

Archontophoenix question

Hey. I received this alexandra palm about 1.5 month ago, since then it has dried older leaves and grown perhaps 5 cm only. I checked the roots- the pot has not filled with rootball yet just some were visible. The new emerging frond looks also a bit dry and curly. Is that normal? I dragged it in just for the picture-usually it is outside on or sunny terrace. Thanks.

I have these 2 large ceramic pots that I filled with regular potting soil, one has a tangerine tree and the other is vacant. I noticed that during long periods of rain they had a tendency to "flood", something that would take several days to "recover" from (which I learned was just sun evaporation). They remain moist even without rainfall or irrigation as well. The tangerine has been planted there for months and hasn't ran into any issues with root rot etc. Some investigation found that they in fact have zero drainage at all. I'm aware of some species (cyrtostachys renda for example) thriving in "aquatic" conditions, though this is a much different environment from,…

Are these seeds still good for anything?

At the end of October last year, I bought and sowed 3 Christmas palm seeds and one bottle palm seed. So far nothing has sprouted. Today I took the seeds out of the pots and took a closer look at them. The first three photos are photos of bottle palm seed. Is it my imagination or did something try to grow near the top end but it withered and became woody? In the third photo you can see that a hole at the bottom of the seed is partially unsealed and a gap has formed. In the fourth photo is a Christmas palm seed. At the top I noticed a characteristic formation. The Christmas palm seed in the fifth photo looks at the top different than the seed in the fourt…

Hello there! I recently just became a plant mom and purchased areca palms and the lady finger palm as indoor house plants. One of the areca palms came with a millipede infestation in the soil, so I tossed it. The areca palm I have now had one mealy bug and these little black flies that I think are gnats (not sure though). I also pulled what I think was an earwig out of the soil. My lady palm I think has soil mites (really REALLY tiny translucent red/brown bugs with legs - they look like specs). I see them crawling in the soil and around the pot. I'm hoping to get clarity on which pests to kill and which to keep. I read online that mealy bugs are bad and that I s…
