Advice on Best Outdoor Patio Palm

Good Day Everyone, I live in Zone 10 Atlantic Florida, and I currently have a number of Ravenea Rivularis of Home Depot/Lowes fame under my pool cage in 20 Gallon Pots. The Majesties struggle if I am not consistent in my maintenance, but with elderly parents who live out-of-state I cannot always give them the care they require. I hate pulling and replacing them, and they seem to be magnets for scale especially when stressed. I am looking to replace them sooner than later with palms better suited to pot life. Howea Forsteriana seems like a good candidate, but they seem to be hard to find, and expensive at that. I live in the midst of what should be go…

Aiphanes horrida seeds

I harvested these seeds from my palm, soaked for 3-4 days, cleaned the pulp off. Do these have a hard shell that needs to be removed , prior to planting? Or plant as is?

I was thinking of putting a small Butia Odorata in there (25L / 6.6G), palm is a few years old and already has many pinnate fronds). Do they work on palms? During the winter it will be put in a greenhouse, rest of the year just outside. I hear the crop and tree growers swear by them, but on this forum I couldn't find much info besides hearing that the fabric airpruning pots are terrible due to the roots attaching themselves to the fabric, but what about these weird plastic ones?

Hi everyone this is my first ever post and this is my first ever palm! I bought it a month and a half ago and it was lovely and green. fast forward 6/8 weeks it’s very unhappy. Any tips on how to revive it- if I can revive it?! i didn’t water it much as I thought it was a desert palm. (I’m U.K. based but we didn’t have much rain.) I’ve since learnt it likes moist soil so have been watering more. Is this the correct thing to do? desperately want to save it! Also have given it slow release fertiliser to try and help. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Aloe Hercules

Hello! New to this..I just recently bought a beautiful 5 gallon aloe hercules. I would love for it to thrive and not kill it lol. What brand soil do you suggest I use for it? I plan to keep it in a pot for now. I've heard mixed reviews about the cactus and palm mix from Kellogs which I have. I've also heard it's best to add pumice or perlite to the mix. Also can anyone give me advice on which size pot to get? how often to water and best place to let it hang out outside? Thanks!

Alternative to Turface (Mexico)

Looking online and I can't really find any at a somewhat reasonable price. What would be a good alternative to use for getting better CEC and water retention growing in Pumice? I see they sell expandable clay pellets for cheap, there is also something called Arcilla Potasica/ pottasium clay anyone know what that might be? I added a photo here of the pottasium clay:

Alternative(s) to Nitrolized Redwood Shavings
by fernonvernon- 2 replies

Am looking to prepare a pot/container mix for a palm tree. Recipe calls for 15% "nitrolized redwood shavings" among other things (i.e. 15% Pine Bark, 15% peat moss, 10% amended topsoil etc.). Seeing as how nitrolized redwood shavings are a component I'm pretty much unable to find/locate, I was wondering if anyone had some thoughts regarding a worthwhile/feasible alternative or sub. 30% Pine Bark seems like a stretch, and I'm vaguely certain the two (Pine Bark and Nitrolized Shavings) aren't really serving the same purpose. Do have access to a product called 'Ecopeat' which looks sort of like peat moss but seems to be a form of (am assuming) decomposed/composted …

Ambient palm lighting

I've been preparing for the long dark of Seattle winter by adding an extensive array of ambient & grow lighting to my palm collection. Coming home to a glowing palm oasis is the best cure for seasonal depression I've found so far lol. Adding different types of lighting to a palm's foliage really transforms the look and feel of the specimen and adds a ton of beauty and texture to the overall presentation. So I thought I'd share some nighttime shots from my collection, I'd love to see the ways you guys have your indoor palms displayed and any and all lighting setups! Cheers Not sure what order the pictures are going to post but the different palms pictured are…

Amending soil for Lady Palms
by Cecile- 0 replies

I recently built new planters in my backyard and filled them with “Moisture control potting mix” from Miracle Gro. It was a lot of bags! Unfortunately we ended up deciding to plant large Lady Palms (Rhapis Excelsa), for which this mix is not ideal, I was told. I’m fairly new to palms and wondering… 1) Whether I can keep this mix and water less often, 2) Remove a fraction of it and amend the remainder? If so, what would you use to amend it and in what proportion? 3) Or do you think I should replace it all? If so, what type of mix do you recommend for palms? I realize now it was silly of me to get potting soil before being sure of what I wa…

I just ordered a couple Bloem Ariana pots and some LECA clay. I'm gonna sacrifice one of my Majesty palms, and my local supermarket has C Cataractarum in 10" pots for $10. Both of these palms are water hogs, so we'll see how it goes. I'll update this thread with pics once everything arrives.

Another watering question
by JohnAndSancho- 1 follower

Since SE TX just straight up skipped spring and went right into summer temps, I'm obviously gonna be watering more - a lot more. Will there be any harm from adding diluted fish fertilizer to each watering? Should I buy some liquid seaweed or kelp too? I've got a few repots and added some slow release (Carl Pool) to the soil to a couple of them. Is this a bad idea? Also have some Jobes palm food (4-4-4) My goals are healthy, heavy dark green palms that will make me hate myself in winter. I'd also like to see my 7g queen clear the roof, and possibly get a nasty note from the apartment manager. Also revive Dirty Sanchez to his former glory.

Any advice on overwintering a Coconut Palm in NC?
by MrTropical- 1 follower

Hey y’all. Hope everyone’s having a great Friday so far. I am in need of some advice on overwintering a Coconut Palm I bought from a local grocery store back in May. When I bought it, I didn’t realize what I was getting into from what I’ve read from others online. I really would like to see it live, but I understand they are truly tropical palms. I live in Zone 6B in North Carolina. Is there anything I can do when it goes inside for the winter to better its chances for survival? Thanks.

I got two pindo palms for Christmas. One seems to be doing ok. This one didn’t transplant so good. Any chance that it comes back? Was it a mistake to cut off the dead foliage? Thanks in advance. Wish I have gotten it from Texas Cold Hardy Palms. The palms I got from there never even showed signs of stress!

Hi, I was just wondering if anyone else is growing this magnificent palm potted. I'm reside in NYS at the foothills of the Adirondack Mts. Mine is almost 3 years old from seed. A seed that was given to me by a friend that owns a florist. It was the only seed brought to her by a customer that had brought it from California. Seems to do quite well for me here, just also seems to grow in spurts. Of course it grows inside during the cold months. I place it in the shower along with other palms to get a deep watering. Shower only on enough to simulate a light misty rain. I have humidifiers in my house as well as banks of 96" windows, so plenty of natural light.…

Anyone else have a jungle inside?

Last winter there was a bunch of other filler plants in here too. Now this entire room is stuffed with nothing but palms, a little line of cactuses on the window sill and the 2 bigger cactus on the side yes. The shelves of seedlings is out of control, all of this outside is one thing, stuffed into the same room is eye opening. Won’t be able to do this another year, seriously have to get this greenhouse finished by this time next year. Definitely a cool spot to hangout in during the winter.

Anyone else successfully grow Ravenea rivularis

Anyone get their indoor Majesty palm to grow and open spears into fronds? Thing is I live at 7,000ft in Flagstaff a fairly dry mountain climate so its very dry indoors usually. It is in the kitchen which give it a little more moisture and heat from cooking. After 1 year of the original transplant from the nursery container I had used some cheap organic generic fruit fertilizer I had laying around. It's mostly bone meal and has a good amount of nitrates. At first I was thinking it had low potassium as the leaves were sort of yellow on some fronds but I checked the soil it wasn't too soggy so then I figured it just didn't get enough light and I pretty much left it there in …
