I have about 48 seedlings that were previously in small cut up water bottles that I would like up to 4"X9" tree pots. These are Licuala sp (not sure which kind) seedlings. Can someone recommend a good soil mix to use on the slightly bigger pots? Should I use Miracle-Gro Cactus, Palm & Citrus Soil, or do something else? The water bottles I have now, I used generic top soil, mixed with sand, perlite, and I put 2" of pea gravel at the bottom of the bottles.

Nursery pot sizes

I have an exceedingly stupid question but it's a bit embarrassing to be asking. I buy 1 gallon water bottles and clearly a one gallon bottle is bigger than a 1 gallon nursery pot. I buy 5 gallon paint that comes in a bucket that is clearly bigger than a 5 gallon nursery pot. Why is that? Is there a reason? May be there are different gallons kind of like imperial tons and metric tons?

Germination moist and mold
by andrebazhen- 3 replies

Hi all, I am trying to germinate W. robusta (also some L. Peltata and date seeds) on my windowsill. A month ago some white mold (photo1) killed all my seedlings - sure I overwatered them. Copper fungicide, H2O2 - no result. Now I've got 50 seeds in two differents types of soil with different soaking time and with H202 soaking. Less than a week - 90% spouted and looking fine (photo2). I've got two questions: 1) I use separate open bag for each seed (photos3-4) and got drainage at the bottom to prevent overwatering and underwatering: using a straw, I pour water straight to the bottom and bottom heat mat slowly raises the moisture to the top. Is it a good solution?…

Christmas palm transplant shock?
by Palmsareawesome- 3 replies

I live in Maryland and I just transplanted this Christmas palm about a week ago. I’ve been leaving it outside because it’s been in the 70’s during the day and 50’s at night. Also it has been getting pretty direct sunlight. Is this transplant shock and if so, is there anything I could do to help it?

Im sure within reason you can always over water, but say your soil is still wet from rain a few days ago but now it's a very hot/sunny day. Is it best to give them a fresh drink during super hot days? Or are they happy as can be with the wet soil?

Washingtonia Robusta in 3.6 gallon pot

So I guess my main question is; I have a Washingtonia robusta in a 3.6 gallon pot. I live in a temperate climate zone 6B as well. My tree is far from mature and I’m wondering what is the lowest temperature this palm should ever tolerate? I usually get the Washingtonia out on the deck when the weather is above 70 F (21.1 C) for that extra sunlight but the weather has been mild lately. I’m wondering, since I have such a young tree, is 55 F - 60 F is too cold?

Hello everyone, i am new to the hobby. I picked up two windmill palms last year. They grew decent. Just picked up two more this year. For some reason they seem to be getting brown and yellow toward the ends and they are not growing as well. I fertilized them at the beginning of this season And i try to water them once a week. I am just a little lost on how to care for them at this point. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

I feel like if I don't pot mine up generously they really suffer quite quickly. My pots are always much bigger than I wish they were for the size of said palm. How do nursery achieve such massive palms in small pots?

Greenhouse shade cloth %?

Definitely going to have my greenhouse up and going this year before winter. Plan on keeping most plants in pots in the greenhouse year-round. I’m not so concerned about winter, I’ve got a plan for that, more concerned about continuous 90f+ days and blazing overhead sun in the summer. I’ve been in quite a few greenhouses during summer with literally oppressive heat inside. Planning on getting 40% shade cloth. Any one have experience using shade cloth and or have any recommendations with ornamentals (palms, cactus, yucca, agave)?

Because they just fall over all the time! Easy to make from corrugated plastic vegetable boxes that your grocery store may have in the back. They're not strong enough on their own, but if you take a box knife and double the interior they work fine. Cutting hand holes to line up on the interior pieces and then taping them together improves it's strength. Cutting away the sides allows sun to reach seedlings.

Best potting mix for livistona chinensis?

Ok so I had a community pot with around twenty seedlings, but the soil was too saturated and they started declining, plus an ant infestation took hold and it was a mess, so I made a new mix 30% perlite 10% peat moss 20% miracle grow cactus and palm, and 40% top soil. Only 7 survived the ordeal but they were doing great, I ferilitzed them and they were all putting out their third or fourth strap leaf. The soil drained perfect, but now it has ants again and some fuzzy mold or fungus, probably from the undissolved fertilizer, Nelson palm fertizer btw if anyone was wondering, what do i do now?

I think I’ve figured out why most of my potted Palms succum
by IndoorPalms- 0 replies

Earlier this week, I tossed about 6 majesty, coconut and foxtail Palm trunk “seedlings” (considering the size the label says they’ll grow) 😂 into my fire pit. I still have a couple/few left, but I notice something different between my pots, and nursery pots they come in: The nursery pots have large drainage holes on both the bottom and sides. The root bound containers drain instantly of water. So it’s always either damp or dry. Leaving little room for water build up. Ive gone thru some pots that I’ve drilled holes thru, and even 10 holes that aren’t big enough, won’t prevent the issue. On some of my pots, I’ve started drilling holes on the sides as well. It see…

I maintain a number of large Rhapis excelsa in containers in pool lanais, pool decks and porches. I have no issues with any of them except four plants located in large stoneware pots on a paved pool deck growing in full sunlight. They’ve been in place for nearly a year and we’re doing well until we had two cold spells here in central Florida back in late December/early January. Since then the existing foliage has become severely chlorotic (almost white) and the new foliage that is growing in now is doing the same. They were fertilized with Sunniland palm fertilizer about two months ago and got one application of Peters 20-20-20 since then. I suspect a pH issue but th…

I’ve recently potted these two young Pinanga disticha palms indoors 6ft from a west facing window with a grow light for additional light and a humidifier set to keep ambient relative humidity at 60%. However I’m noticing the leaves are drying up and dying. Is this too much light? Or too little? the soil is well draining and moist but not wet…
