Phoenix Roebellinis dying
by freddyuk- 21 replies

We bought this pigmy date palm from a local supplier as it was really cheap and looked healthy. It is around 15 years old. I have repotted into a suitable narrow palm pot and it resides in our conservatory with shaded sun (Ireland so not a lot of sun). I soon noticed the growing spikes were not moving at all. After a year the bigger lower fronds have browned off and the trunk is losing any signs of green turning brown too. The growing spikes have still not moved so I guess it was dying from day one. It has been watered sparingly to stop it drying out. Is it time to give up as I know they can take a long time to die. I have another palm which I grew from seed and thi…

Phoenix Dactylifera seeds not giving up the goods?
by RaychHasDatePalms- 21 replies

I have previously sprouted date palm seeds with the method of them wrapped in a wet paper towel, stuck in an air tight baggie, and putting them in a nice, hot window. They sprouted beautifully! We have since moved, and I am working on the same thing now, but with a heating pad instead of a hot window. (My house is about 70 degrees at this floor of the house, so I do need the extra heat.) The only differences I can think of are that I did pre-soak the original seeds for several days or possibly a week. I forgot to soak these ones. Also, the window had sunlight, but the heating pad does not. Not sure how much sunlight could penetrate a wet paper towel, and anyway, I t…

Hedyscepe Canterburyana as a Houseplant!
by ZPalms- 1 follower

Back in September, I was looking for a palm that would work best as a houseplant, and on September 25, 2023, @Darold Petty messaged me asking if I would like to experiment with a Hedyscepe as a houseplant. And of course, I said yes because that would make such a unique and fun experiment, and I'm really grateful to have a chance to try one of these. Not too long after, it arrived, and I was able to pop it into a clear plastic cup so I could see the roots develop, which Darold already had sprouted when he sent it to me with a tiny sprout on it. I didn't change anything for this palm, and I didn't give it any special lighting other than what it gets from the window. Th…

tall pots for seedlings
by miamicuse- 20 replies

I have seen some members here grow their palm seedlings in a tall pot, I am guessing 4"X4" square pots? These pots fit nicely together in a compact arrangement may be 4 to 6 in a row that fit snug in a rectangular tray. Do those come in a set? Like 24 pots + 1 tray? I tried googling for them but couldn't find them, I probably didn't use the proper keywords. Anyone care to steer me in the right direction or a place to get these at good prices?

Hi everyone, Glad to be accepted into the forum :-). My recent adoption of a dwarf date palm tree has led me here, to reach out for your help. Originally the tree was planted on the ground before I received it, which now lives in an outdoor pot in my small backyard. The guy who supplied the tree surprised me that he could drop it off quickly on the day and was caught half-prepared. He had dropped it off without a soil bag and unfortunately had to stay like that overnight as my backyard is just concrete (with fake grass). I did as much as I could to quickly pot it on the next day with a mixture of peat, good quality soil & sand along with a 15cm/6" base of sc…

Made another road trip to San Diego area and visited Joe at Discovery Island Palms for the 3rd time and also this trip got to meet Mark of Oceanside palms and tour his garden..plus pick up a few palms as well. This is such an amazing hobby with all the great people in it from around the world that I get to converse with and sometimes meet in person. Joe and Mark have amazing yards and a great variety of palms for sale. Picture is of Mark showing me around his yard. Most palms are in the ground but has some nice ones in pots as well.

SAGO fronds curling

Hi. I realize that a Sago is not a true palm, but I'm hoping someone has experienced this. Several (not all) of the fronds are curling at the ends.....its not throughout the plant and only on one side. I would appreciate any advice. I've attached some pics to give some clarity to the curling. FYI, I'm growing 8 palm varieties grow beds (not pots), in an all season greenhouse; in a soil mix of 50% topsoil, 20% peat, 20% compost, 10% perlite; with drip irrigation. Many thanks dave

What would you buy?

My family wants to buy me a gift to help cheer me up and they know I love palms. I'm of course constantly looking on Etsy and various other sites at palms because watching palms grow is therapeutic. I've got plenty in my shopping cart on various sites, but out of a handful, what would you pick? I also, as always, bounce between scientific and common names. And want to see growth that won't take years. Plants can go outside and soak up sun intermittently even during winter here. It's not Canada,.but they'll bounce between outdoors and indoors for about 4 months. Tons of indoor and outdoor humidity and full sun vs plenty of grow bulbs. Red Latania (I have a cou…

So where do you guys buy your pots from? I'm looking for some of those small, yet deep/tall pots that I can grow seedlings in. Preferably from a site that doesn't require you to buy a whole pallet full of pots.

Should I separate majesty palms?

I recently bought three majesty palms growing together in one pot from Lowe’s hardware. I’ve had them growing like this for about two months and they’re doing well; however, I’ve heard that they will grow faster if separated. Should I separate them or is there too much of a chance I would harm the plants by doing so?

Is my palm tree dieing?
by Rookie-gardener- 20 replies

Hi, I have recently got two Robusta palm trees 3-4 ft in height from livingsocial site. I have planted them at the bottom of my garden into two big plant pots 42cm.Since putting these in a pot i have noticed some the palm leaves have split or turned slightly yellow and the palm didnt feel secure enough in the pot so i added some support by planting a stick and securing the root. My questions are. Too much water or not enough water? I water every other day depending on weather. If it rains than i miss a day. I use a watering can and water for about 5 seconds around the pot. Plant not deep enough in the pot? The plant was planted j…

Older Chamaedorea Elegans needs help (air layering?)
by DCA_Palm_Fan- 20 replies

Hello everyone. It's been a while since I have been here. Glad to be back. I have an older C. Elegans that is in. Ed of some help. I'm not sure if it's age but I'm guessing at least 10-12 years old if not older? I've had it since 2009. I can't remember where I got it but I suspect it may have been through someone selling here. Anyway it is about 2&1/2 to 3 feet tall. It's been though, ans survived a lot including a few moves, very low light condition at one point, and having all of its leaves burnt off by being left outdoors in direct sun. It's recently had a severe newly bug infestation which took months to get rid of but now after applying a systemi…

Washingtonia Robusta

Hi, Please help, I have three Washingtonia Robusta, I have researched online as much as I can but am seeing so much conflicting information. I brought 2 Washingtonia Robusta or mexican fan palms, and one pot had two growing in one, so I hosed down the root ball and untangled the roots and re potted, the two I split are in smaller 36 cm pots, and one I put into a large 60 cm barrel pot. They came 100cm in height, and looked nice and healthy. as soon as I re-potted them they immediately flopped over and the fronds all closed up. the soil mix I looked up and mixed john innes no.3 and half all purpose compost, which was what recommended on a video I watched. I got …

Kicking them out!

If you grow containerized palms in frosty areas, do you season them outside and when do they leave the comfort of their shelter? I do this in approximately three waves. Today, I kicked out the Cy, cas revolutas (Sago palms), Butia (Pindo) palms, Chamaerops, Phoenix canariensis, Washingtonia robusta, Sabal bermudana, and one of the four Queen palms (Syagrus). These are some of my very biggest and heaviest so it was a major chore

It has been raining non stop the last three days here and the temperatures have dropped. Our maximum today is only 13 C (55 F). Some of my palms are already overwatered, for instance my Euterpe. Now the rain keeps the pot soil constantly moist. Is there some trick to help the soil dry faster? I tried putting the pot on kitchen paper but it doesn't seem to absorb much.. They are outside on the balcony and I'd rather not put them indoors yet.

Dramatic Cocos Is Dramatic
by RaychHasDatePalms- 20 replies

We went from browning and whithering due to overwatering to, suddenly, an overnight drastic change to browning and whithering due to under-watering. I tried to make the soil drain easily with cactus soil mixed with lava rock, gave it a bigger pot, and have a grow light on it maybe 12 hours a day or so. It’s in the warmest spot in the house and I have a spray bottle to counteract the current lack of humidity. Then all this. Any thoughts?

Potted Christmas Palm Dying - HELP!
by Sadplantmom- 19 replies
- 1.8k views
Hi all! I got this huge potted christmas palm tree on Oct 29 (prob over 12 ft tall) - I had meant for it to go out on the terrace but quickly realized that it would be too cold in NYC for it right now and brought it inside for the winter. It’s been less than 2 weeks since I brought it home, and I’ve noticed that some of the leaves have started turning fully brown. I want to act quickly to turn this around but I am so bad with plants! A few questions: 1. Does anyone know what could be the issue? How can I rectify this? 2. Is there anything specific I can be doing to ensure it survives? 3. How much water should I be giving it and how often? Some online forums say …

New potting mix and fertilizer?
by Grasswing- 1 follower

Hello everyone, I made a small research on Palmtalk about the potting mix people use and decided that I need to upgrade my growing medium to some decent level. Most of the time, I was using a "palm substrate" mixed with sand, but it was really hard and heavy - as you can see here: I have Brahea, Butia and some other subtropical palms sprouting now, so I realized they need some more mineral substrate. I prepared this mix: LECA (expanded clay) : perlite : pine bark : palm substrate (mostly peat) = 1:1:1:0,5 What do you think about this mix? Anything to improve, add? My other concern is, how is the best way to fertilize, and w…

Hello everyone, and thank you for allowing me to be a part of this group. My name is John and I'm relatively new to growing palms (or tying to..lol). I live in Bay City MI. I currently have 6 Chamaedorea Elegan's (Neanthe Bella Palm) that are growing like crazy. I know these are pretty easy to grow and for a beginner like me I'm pretty happy with the results so far. I've recently started some Hyophorbe Lagenicaulis ( Bottle Palm) seeds, as well as some Psychotria Eleta's (Hot Lip's). I also have an order of Coco's Nucifera( coconut palms), Bismarcka Nobilis (Bismarck Palm's), and last but not least Crytostachys Renda (Lipstick Palm's). My questions are With the winter wea…
