Potting Soil in So Cal

Does anyone have a good source for potting soil in Southern California? I use to drive up to L.A. to OTY soil. They have a great mix. However, they have a 3 yard minimum . I just need 1 yard at a time. Looking for something nurseries would use. My end use will be palms and otters tropical plants. Thank you! Jeff

Hello! Does anyone have an experience with Linospadix as a potted palm? Is it suitable for indoor growth? It does look like an Australian version of Parlour palm to me

Separating washy seedlings
by 5am- 1 reply

How much care must be taken to separate Washingtonia seedlings from a community pot? I’ve collected some 50+ seeds and will have plenty of room for 50+ trees but present circumstances may not allow for 50+ nursery pots. If I put 10 germinating seeds to a 5gal pot and decide to separate them during the strap leaf stage by hosing the dirt from the roots are they likely to survive? Is there a better method? Pics of some parents, just for good measure.

To repot or not to repot? That is the question
by Dimimelbourne- 1 reply

I have this golden cane palm who I keep indoors in a really bright room. It has grown incredibly fast, more than doubled in the few months I’ve had it. I repotted it perhaps 3 months ago and it looks like it could already use another upgrade! I want to encourage it to keep growing so I’m unsure if repotting it would encourage this or perhaps slow it down? Maybe it’ll focus more on growing roots or the root movement may affect its foliage growth? We’re also coming to the end of the growing season where I am as well.

Help with unwell Kentia palm
by TotheRescue2021- 1 reply

Hi there, my roomates plant isnt looking well and i want to help! Observations: Currently the Kentia is experiencing dying of lower foliage, and browing on some of the ends of the middle section leaves. Moreover there are some small brown patches appearing in some middle/upper parts of the leaves as well A few questions, it is potted in a smaller typical plastic pot, and this original pot has been placed into a larger "showy" one for aesthetics, however this larger pot is also filled to the top with soil....is this appropriate? or is the plant perhaps suffering from something like root rot due to there not really being a place for drainage as it can …

Lytocaryum weddellianum with brown tips

Hi to everyone. I recently bought two of these little palms for a really low price (even for Argentina, where everything is expensive) and both of them already had, at least, one leaf with brown tips, really brown tips. I think the main reason for this was very low humidity at its old emplacement, but I want to hear other opinions and some advice to avoid this.

Hello there! I recently just became a plant mom and purchased areca palms and the lady finger palm as indoor house plants. One of the areca palms came with a millipede infestation in the soil, so I tossed it. The areca palm I have now had one mealy bug and these little black flies that I think are gnats (not sure though). I also pulled what I think was an earwig out of the soil. My lady palm I think has soil mites (really REALLY tiny translucent red/brown bugs with legs - they look like specs). I see them crawling in the soil and around the pot. I'm hoping to get clarity on which pests to kill and which to keep. I read online that mealy bugs are bad and that I s…

Pots

Sooo if I missed something, my apologies. But I haven't seen actual talk about pots here. Open to suggestions and reviews, etc. I'll add links when I'm more functional. Personally, I've got a weird mix of garden pots and self watering pots I found on Amazon, various Bloem products (love Lucca, don't love Ariana) and some super cheap pots I found at Target. For functionality I LOVE the Bloem Lucca since they've got lips that are easy to pick up and move, but it's hard to beat the Target pots. $3 for an 8" pot I can drain if I overwater? Can't beat it.

Hi guys! Anyone have an idea as to what could be causing these brown/dry/yellow damage spots on the new frond that just opened last week and the new spear of my small Dypsis lutescens? I believe the spear is growing at a decent rate for indoors (first emerged last Thursday, 4 inches long today) but it’s not looking good. It even has a tear in it which I’ve never seen before. I have a feeling I may have overfed it as the spear also feels quite tender compared to the previous spear. Conditions it is in: - Large south-east facing window but I have to supplement with grow light over winter averaging 1500-2000 foot candles for 12-14 hours - Temperatures ar…

Where to keep planted seedlings

Hi everyone, have 2 princess palms planted and an areca palm. I am not sure where to keep them- I have read many things: under light, in indirect sunlight, outside in warm sunlight, and not to worry about light, just somewhere humid. Any assistance would be great.

Hello, I am very new to growing palms. I have 4 small parlor palms so far and am looking to provide some fertilizer. I checked my local dollar store and bought these: https://www.amazon.ca/Jobes-Houseplant-Indoor-Fertilizer-Spikes/dp/B000279304/ref=pd_cp_86_3?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=7PEKWC42Z91P52MDSVZK Would they be ok, or would something like these from Amazon be better? https://www.amazon.ca/Jobes-Indoor-Fertilizer-30-Pack-5101/dp/B000GD3KD0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1493138672&sr=8-1&keywords=jobe%27s+palm+spikes Thanks in advance.

Cheap seedling protection setups?
by Keys6505- 1 reply

So the rats and squirrels keep getting my seedlings. I finally rigged up a setup with some stackable plastic shelving with some bird netting wrapped around it and it seemed to be enough of a deterrent but the friggin things got in there and tore everything up again. They either chew the seedling off at the soil line or just yank it straight out of the dirt. I'm probably moving in the next 6 months or so, so not looking for any permanent setup, I'd rather have something I can get rid of before I go so I don't have to move it. I looked into propane tank cages laid down on its back but they are kind of pricey for a temp fix. Also considered dog crates but I think the hol…

Overwintering pots
by Than- 1 reply

I know it is only June but I see my potted tropical plants grow fast and I had to repot all of them to much bigger pots and I'm sure I won't have enough time space to put all of them in my flat this winter. I was wondering if any of you leaves potted tropicals outside during winter and if yes, do you take any action to protect the plants? I am mostly concerned about keeping the roots warm. I was wondering if inserting the pot in a bigger pot filled with mulch is a good idea? In my patio temperatures can go down to 34 F (1C) on the very coldest nights. On most days temperatures are between 45 and 55 F which is not bad but I have some quite tropical species, such as a…

the nursery I bought from told me to spray Peter 202020 on the palm once a month and dynamite once a year? Is that right? does this change if the palm is now longer grown outdoors in shade cloth and now indoors by a south facing window?

Help me nurse this palm plant back to life
by Newtoplants- 1 reply

I’m really not a plant person, but I found this half dead palm plant in the dumpster last spring and felt bad for it since it still had some green leaves. It’s been on my covered patio all summer and miraculously survived. Now that it’s getting into fall, I think it needs to come indoors. It’s a fighter so I’m willing to try to nurse it back to health since it’s survived outside with minimal care all summer. I asked about it on another forum that isn’t at all plant related and thought since it’s been identified as a palm, this would be a better forum for more specific advice. The plant is down to 2 leaves, one has some brown edges. I have been watering sporadically a…

Overall, she’s growing well and all the new growth is fine. Repotted 3 months ago and added bone/blood meal, lesco 8-2-12-4, compost and some peat moss all in the blend. It gets filtered sun in the morning and mid afternoon. Is this some sort of blight?

My Açaí Palm (Euterpe oleracea) seedling... As shown in the picture, Açaí Palm first leaves are bifid. It will join my Syagrus weddeliana, Phoenix sp. and Chamaedorea elegans in my small palm collection in my apartment. Soon, a Chamaedorea metallica will join them. It's a dwarf açaí variety that reaches only 3 to 4 meters. As soon as it reaches its adult size, it will be planted at my father's backyard.
