Calamus in pots
by GrumpyGrower- 2 replies

I really miss any reliable experiences about Calamus genera. At first I want to describe my experiences. Please feel free to share yours, I think it's one of the most challenging genera to grow in pots. I was starting with Calamus viminalis seeds, germination was easy, in 30°C and it took 2 months approximately. But from some reason, I wasn't able to keep them alive for more then 2-3 leafs. Mortality was brutal, only 2/20 plants survived. Here is the "biggest" one (Calamus viminalis): In my opinion, the biggest problem came from roots. All my next attempts with this genera are only with new potting mix consist mainly of pinium bark chips with Seramis. …

Fertilizer Recs?
by rttunc- 1 follower

Any fertilizer suggestions for a semi-novice that tends to struggle with appropriate measurements?!? I worry about not using enough but then also overdoing it! Are the spikes any good? I just moved to south Florida and have really taken advantage of it with my palm collection, but am limited to having them in pots for the foreseeable future. Any (affordable and easy to find) recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

Can I rescue? Areca?

I just moved in with my boyfriend only to discover his two 30-year old inherited palms in bad condition. I've never had palms before, so I'm not sure what to do or even if they can be saved. Still kind of confused as to what the old brown parts at the bottom are - but I want to learn! He has definitely been overwatering them, so i'm thinking there is root rot. Are they too far gone? If not, is that the only problem? I'd like to save them if possible, but I'm not sure if I can

Leaning towards the sun
by Palm Sundae- 1 follower

Have a few Washingtonia robusta/filibusta started from seed and currently in 5 gallon pots. All of them were potted straight up or very nearly so. They now all lean a little or a lot to the south (towards the sun.) None of my other palms seem to be doing this. Is this normal? Should I try to fix it by turning the pots or will it matter when they go in the ground later this year? Probably not enough time to make much of a difference is what I think. When they go in the ground I'm guessing it is best to try to get them 'straight' again. Are they small enough to where it does not matter? They will be about 24" tall, smallish compared to big box store palms because …

Hyophorbe verschaffeltii - Spindle Palm

Grown from seed received from @PalmatierMeg several years ago, this and another nearly identical (same stone pot, same size) adorn either side of my garage front during the summer months but spend the winters in the conservatory. I move them in/out with a heavy-duty hand truck and tie-down strap, but they'll soon be too heavy for even that. Thanks, @PalmatierMeg. Six-inch rule for scale.

I just ordered a couple Bloem Ariana pots and some LECA clay. I'm gonna sacrifice one of my Majesty palms, and my local supermarket has C Cataractarum in 10" pots for $10. Both of these palms are water hogs, so we'll see how it goes. I'll update this thread with pics once everything arrives.

Cyphophoenix Elegans indoors in pot?
by smithgn- 2 replies
Hello everyone, I bought this Cyphophoenix Elegans over a year ago from Floribunda with no plans of putting it in ground; but I did keep it outside with my chamaedoreas in part sun during the summer. Even in part sun, the cyphophoenix couldn't take our extreme heat and humidity despite being watered frequently. The tips of the leaves dried out and by fall, the palm was clinging on to life when I decided to bring it indoors to my bathroom. Since it's been in my bathroom, it's shot out two new fronds and is making a comeback despite the very limited artificial light. Because of this and the fact that I'll never put it in ground outdoors, Ive thought about moving it i…

Too Much Flare (and Mulch)?
by fernonvernon- 2 replies
Hi all, Just finished repotting a Christmas Palm that'd been sitting in a big ol' plastic pot since we moved in. It'd been (essentially) living in fine sand, so we went ahead and prepared a mix (sourced from JungleMusic), but -- having read that palm's are particularly sensitive when it comes to their roots -- attempted to keep the (root-bound) ball as intact as possible. Am very much a minnow around here, and seeing as how I've basically never done this sort of thing before... I'd hugely appreciate some feedback/advice re whether I'm "meant" to cover more of the flare. [Not entirely sure what I can do about the relative "mossiness" of the san…

Potted palms fading quickly please help
by Noob2palms- 2 replies

Hello! forgive me this is long but I need help - new to palms! I recently purchased 5 potted palms and am having a lot of trouble with three of them. Two pigmeys are okay but I have two Christmas palms and one bottle palm that appear to be in trouble. When I bought them they looked a bit droopy but still green and more alive. I have only had them for a week and the leaves are dry like paper, curling and drooping as well as changing colors. the garden store I got them from said soak them at least once every day - I have been deep watering about every two days (good drainage at bottom) in AM when the soil no longer feels moist (tho not dead dry) 2 inches …

Humidifier for palms

Hi everyone, I'm thinking of purchasing an indoor humidifier and wanted your opinions about it. I was thinking of going with a warm mist humidifier instead of a cool one as I already have a small cool mist unit and it is too weak. Another option is a steam humidifier such as the Boneco S450. What do you guys think? I live in a condo that's about 825 sq ft. Thank you.

Ptychosperma macarthurii in Pot
by Pal Meir- 2 replies

Ptychosperma macarthurii germinated from seed in *1986; the seed came from a palm of Singapore Botanical Garden. @GrumpyGrower The first two photos (2003 & 2006) show the palm in a small Ø20xH20cm pot; the 3rd one (sunburnt) in a Ø24xH24cm (?) pot. It was given away to a zoological garden in 2008. The last photo might be the parent tree (?).

Hello, I just spent time preparing my igloo for a mister system and have dug the floor out to replace with aggregate and have been wondering the cheapest way to heat the floor. Apart from copper pipe I was thinking of laying black 25mm poly pipe which I would run hot water through to heat the gravel. Any ideas would be appreciated. thanks Kris

Best medium for Cat Palm?

I live in zone 7a (Olney MD) and have 2 6 foot cat palms that are outgrowing their 3 gallon pots. (They are about 6 feet tall and falling over with each gust of wind) I want to move them to a bigger pots where they will live outdoors about 1/2 the year and spend colder months in my basement, under grow lights (unless there is a chance they will do well in a 40 degree F garage all winter) What is a good size pot to move them into and what is the best medium in which to plant them? Potting mix? a mixture of sand and potting soil? something else? Thanks
