Garden question

Hello everyone, So I've been working on my garden and it's coming really nice , but there's is something that bugs me the most in the garden. I would like to cover this ( see pic) in my garden. I'm no expert ,but I'm guessing it's the water meter? Anyways my plan is to put a potted plant in front of it to cover it so if a maintenance person ever comes out to check on it they could just move the plant out of the way to check or work on it. Of course there's no way I'm going to tamper with it being that I don't own it , such as paint it. Any ideas on how to cover it or make it blend into my garden? Suggestions on particular potted plants that I can use cover it ? I…

Thoughts on dypsis in pots
by N8ALLRIGHT- 2 replies

Really like some of the bamboo style trunks on some of the dypsis species. I recently was in the keys and at one of our favorite restaurants there they had some beautiful multitrunk dypsis, think either pembana or cabadae. So now I want one. Since I am in Missouri it's obviously going to live it's life in a pot. It will get to spend 8 months or so outside. With that in mind thoughts on humidity, light, being prone to spider mites etc during the winter Pembana Cabadae Lanceolata Onilahensis Baronii Those were my favorites,I know lutescens could be added to the list but it's pretty yellow. Thanks

Coccothrinax seedlings
by David_Sweden- 2 replies

End of August 2016 I got 10 Coccothrinax Miraguama seeds from Zadengigant and 15 Rhapis Multifida from Seedman. One week later I discovered that Rarepalmseeds had just gotten some fresh Cocco M so I bought 30 of them plus 30 Cocco Fragrans (but got ~20% extra). In September I "planted" most of them in ziplock bags with damp paper towel (1-2 each) except 21 Cocco F and 33 Cocco M from RPS which I dumped collectively in 2 bags with moist soil. By Oct 16th the first had germinated: Two Cocco F and on Cocco M from RPS. In December I moved them germinated ones to "rootrainers" 10cm deep: 8 Cocco M and 21 Cocco F, of which 1+5 from paper towel bags. None had leaves …

Any IPS/Forum members successful at keeping Licuala Grandis indoors in cold climates such as Zone 5a in Chicago? Would greatly appreciate advice. Mine is now sick - see photos and details below. BACKGROUND: Licuala Grandis replanted 2 days ago with Pal Meir soil mixture (Leca, Repti Bark, coars pumice since Seramis not sold here) When replanted, most of the soil around the root ball/roots was removed and it was planted in a smaller diameter pot. Roots were exposed for several minutes before being planted into your mixture. The new leaf growth has shrunk in size/decreased in width quite a bit and leaves have suddenly become drier. …

Hi I'm a new majesty palm owner. I've had this for about 2/3 weeks and have been watering every week and a half. The palm is in the shade with a south facing window. Anyways. I've noticed these brown spots all over the leaves. There's no signs of bugs that I can tell. Is this okay?https://linksharing.samsungcloud.com/xaG0Bl7ytqnX

At the beginning of this year I started growing A. Alexandraes in 25g pots. They have grown so fast from 3 gallon pots that they are already putting roots out the bottom. So the question is... what do you do with roots that go out the bottom? Cut them? leave them if they are on concrete?

Vitamin Soak for Seeds
by knell- 2 replies
Hello: I found this fascinating article where scientists increased the germination and disease resistance of pearled millet with a 6h soak in vitamin rich water followed by a foliar niacin and MSB treatment when the seedling emerged. I know there isnt a direct relation between downy mildew in pearled millet and palm trees, but it has me curious as to the relationship between a vitamin soak and seed germination. I will set up some tests that do everything but inoculate and report back! www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0261219407000622 edit - - i had only a faint idea of what menadione sodium bisulphite was before starting on this. …

Potted European Fan Palms and 1 Mule

My neighbor works in landscaping and offered me 2 European fan palms that were dug up and I decided to pot them for the time being. The multi trunk one is currently under a covered patio and I’m afraid it might not get enough sun but I guess time will tell. The single truck is pretty tall and is currently getting full sun. The mule was bought at a local nursery and is also getting full sun.

Hiiii!! so this started after I put sulpomag in the soil a few weeks ago. I’ve only given my licuala sulpomag 2x, the first was 1 teaspoon in March and the second was 1 teaspoon in May. After the second teaspoon the palm leaves started turning yellow. I assumed it was fertilizer burn but the weird thing is that despite being watered and it being well over a month since the palm was fertilized, it’s continued to turn yellow. I’ve attached photographs of the yellowing. Any tips on next steps or what the cause might be? Thank you!!

Removing soil around the rootball of a Roebelenii
by Palmfarmer- 1 follower

i have 3 fot Roebelenii that was doing fantastic outdoors. However it started deceling recently (new leaf tips started getting slightly yellow and it needed constant watering to not have the fronds hang) I think because it was so rootbound and the soil have gotton very compacted around the rootball. It had to be broken out of the pot. I Have bought a new pot for it that is around 25% bigger. I am wondering if the best thing to do is try and remove a good chunk of the bad soil around the rootball using a waterhose before replanting it in the bigger pot as it might not only have the issue of compaction, but buildup from bad things in the water & syntetic …

Howea belmoreana Seedling Yellowing
by HtownPalms- 2 followers

I have a question about the health of my Howea belmoreana seedlings. I got these as seeds from a tree in Balboa Park in San Diego in November of 2018. They sprouted in late spring of 2019 and are a little over 2 years old. They have been slow but steady growers. I water them about once every 10-14 days and the sit next to a window with decent sunlight throughout the entire day. I fertilize them with a few granules of Palm gain every 3 months. Unfortunately I have noticed that their new fronds keep opening up paler and paler. I was going to see if anyone could tell me what might be causing this? I'm not sure if it's a sunlight, water, or nutrients?

These all seem to be doing fine inside over the winter. I have watered them about two times since late November at different times based on their look and pot weight. CIDP have begun to push new growth. Windmills are happy. Hopefully after this cold snap next week they can be moved outside?

Areca Palm Struggling Indoors

I have this Areca palm that was kept outdoors last summer in Illinois, USA. It did well and was repotted in August 2022 into a very large pot, maybe 18” diameter and 20” tall. Once the temperature started dropping in October 2022, it was brought indoors for the winter. It has been watered every 10-14 days, and given Palm Tone fertilizer twice since then, once in winter and once recently The leaves have some discoloration, which I think is just old leaves that need to be trimmed. The color looks alright, not great. But I am concerned because it shot out a new leaf a few weeks ago, but it hasn’t opened up yet. Any help would be appreciated! I think the weathe…

I was thinking of putting a small Butia Odorata in there (25L / 6.6G), palm is a few years old and already has many pinnate fronds). Do they work on palms? During the winter it will be put in a greenhouse, rest of the year just outside. I hear the crop and tree growers swear by them, but on this forum I couldn't find much info besides hearing that the fabric airpruning pots are terrible due to the roots attaching themselves to the fabric, but what about these weird plastic ones?

Nannorrhops ritchiana in a pot

Hi everyone, I want to share with you my potted Nannorrhops, one of the oldest palms that I have. It is an extremely slow species, but to be fair, it didn't have the optimal conditions all the time and I neglected it a bit for quite some time. This one is 7 years old and despite having still undivided leaves, it has some suckers already (if it is right to call them suckers). Here are some visuals, enjoy! Regards, Ondra

Hi, I received a Pygmy date palm from my girlfriend and I fear I’ve killed it! I don’t know if it’s not getting enough sunlight or at first I thought I watered it too much. Does this look salvageable? The leaves are very dried out but there are still some green ones. Thank you!

Yuca Yellowish

Hi I am brand new to planting and gardening in general. We re did our front garden areas and included are two yuca planted trees. They were slightly brownish yellowish to start. I have had them a week. Any idea what would cause the greens to do this and what can I do to fix it and make sure it doesn’t happen again? https://drive.google.com/file/d/1LXwHP9w3BxQf-IwQsumgY0_rwKHUb98S https://drive.google.com/file/d/1S6AspC4nJllBY8MEOwpA2-qujzMIxfM_ https://drive.google.com/file/d/1L2ujBIpZBFE4GZHdf5V1B11Opu7CAkgg/view?usp=drivesdk https://drive.google.com/file/d/1c7FYRVXvTArhQ7MIYjVsji_B3SRZZIN7/view?usp=drivesdk
