Issues with new Kentia
by Kariri- 1 follower

I recently bought a 2 foot Kentia with one 3 foot frond from Etsy. It is 2 palms. On arrival, I noticed that there were black dots on the stalks , and other mild blemishes on the fronds. The pot was damaged and some of the soil was displaced. I wanted to repot it and use new soil and used this forum to look at various threads on potting mixes. I couldn't find pine bark, so I used fir bark. The mixture was roughly 30% FoxFarm Ocean Forest potting soil, 20% Fir Bark, 20% Hydroball (a Leca substitute), and 30% Pumice. I then watered it. It seemed to dry out quickly, and after a few days I noticed yellowing tips on many fronds, so I googled "yellowing tips on palm fronds…

Here’s a quick video of my palm seedling collection that I have set up in my garage. Now that the weather is hopefully switching to a more cozy temperature I’ll probably move these back out to the covered patio. Although most of these look pretty happy in here I need the space back in my tiny garage. IMG_9574.MOV

Springtails - Do I fight them?

Hello, I noticed i have springtails on Lytocaryums, how deadly those creatures are? I've read they are fairly not dangerous to plants but I need to be sure since they infested my favorite palms. I must have brought this crap with a potting mix I used for my balcony plants. Should i fight them now since there are not so many visible? If so, is there non chemical alernative?

broken fronds or something else?

I recently purchased two raveneas in a pot from a garden center, and as stated, one is a variegated one, the larger one, not shown in this image. Currently acclimating so it's inside, but the small one has almost toppled over. It could just be me accidentally snapping all the fronds, which were thin from lack of light, while moving it, but I also don't 100% think so. Could this be root rot? I've seen something similar in other plants. Could this be something else? I've included an image below, thanks for any help! Also, in case you were wondering, larger one doesn't have any visible concerns. But they were buried very deep, like at least 1.5 inches above the growth point,…

Re potting Kentia

Hi there, I own a Kentia palm (2 stems actually) which I found in a bin a few years ago and is growing back well. I want to ask you guys for advice about the position they are currently growing, which is a bit inconvenient to place in my house. As you can see from the images they are kind of V shape positioned so the foliages are spreading horizontally more then vertically. I know that Kentia are particularly sensible about repotting and messing with roots in general so my questions are: Do you think it possible to split and reposition them in a more vertical manner? …

Pests

I have several tropical understory palms of which I keep in pots on my roofed lanai. Lately, I have been having mealybugs located around the area of where the new spears come out of the crown. Unfortunately, on a couple of my palms, treating with spray insecticide or simply applying some hydrogen peroxide has resulted in rot or spear pull. When I can, I will place the plant outside in some sun in hopes it clears it up (forget ladybugs, I rarely see them around). In some plants, that doesn't even help. In other plants, I can't place them in sun. Being that this is summer and it is happening, I'm kind of sweating winter. I'm kind of at a loss here on how to keep my und…

Garden question

Hello everyone, So I've been working on my garden and it's coming really nice , but there's is something that bugs me the most in the garden. I would like to cover this ( see pic) in my garden. I'm no expert ,but I'm guessing it's the water meter? Anyways my plan is to put a potted plant in front of it to cover it so if a maintenance person ever comes out to check on it they could just move the plant out of the way to check or work on it. Of course there's no way I'm going to tamper with it being that I don't own it , such as paint it. Any ideas on how to cover it or make it blend into my garden? Suggestions on particular potted plants that I can use cover it ? I…

Thoughts on dypsis in pots
by N8ALLRIGHT- 2 replies

Really like some of the bamboo style trunks on some of the dypsis species. I recently was in the keys and at one of our favorite restaurants there they had some beautiful multitrunk dypsis, think either pembana or cabadae. So now I want one. Since I am in Missouri it's obviously going to live it's life in a pot. It will get to spend 8 months or so outside. With that in mind thoughts on humidity, light, being prone to spider mites etc during the winter Pembana Cabadae Lanceolata Onilahensis Baronii Those were my favorites,I know lutescens could be added to the list but it's pretty yellow. Thanks

Coccothrinax seedlings
by David_Sweden- 2 replies

End of August 2016 I got 10 Coccothrinax Miraguama seeds from Zadengigant and 15 Rhapis Multifida from Seedman. One week later I discovered that Rarepalmseeds had just gotten some fresh Cocco M so I bought 30 of them plus 30 Cocco Fragrans (but got ~20% extra). In September I "planted" most of them in ziplock bags with damp paper towel (1-2 each) except 21 Cocco F and 33 Cocco M from RPS which I dumped collectively in 2 bags with moist soil. By Oct 16th the first had germinated: Two Cocco F and on Cocco M from RPS. In December I moved them germinated ones to "rootrainers" 10cm deep: 8 Cocco M and 21 Cocco F, of which 1+5 from paper towel bags. None had leaves …

Any IPS/Forum members successful at keeping Licuala Grandis indoors in cold climates such as Zone 5a in Chicago? Would greatly appreciate advice. Mine is now sick - see photos and details below. BACKGROUND: Licuala Grandis replanted 2 days ago with Pal Meir soil mixture (Leca, Repti Bark, coars pumice since Seramis not sold here) When replanted, most of the soil around the root ball/roots was removed and it was planted in a smaller diameter pot. Roots were exposed for several minutes before being planted into your mixture. The new leaf growth has shrunk in size/decreased in width quite a bit and leaves have suddenly become drier. …
