Separating S. minor
by 5am- 1 follower

Ever been too afraid to separate minors because the root damage may kill them? Me too! But since my last move, seedlings are readily available at a local nursery so I can experiment without feeling too much remorse if something goes wrong. March 19. There were 3 minors growing in a single pot and I wasn't happy with the arrangement. These 3 have much smaller leaves than my other minors. Not really sure if they're misidentified or perhaps just a much smaller variety. Anyway, it was time to yank it out and see what could be done! The roots were only about 1/3 of this depth just 10 months before, when it was potted. This lizard was hiding under the pot…

Is it really washingtonia robusta
by Lady Gaga- 2 replies

Hi, I have two Washingtonia robusta, I germinated them year ago. And they're from good source I believe, but now they have those little white threads on their leaves. I don't know, maybe it's too soon to say this, or maybe robusta has little threads too? I hope that on the first photo it is the first real leaf.

Trachycarpus in Michigan
by Leelanau Palms- 2 replies

My two trachycarpus fortunei (3 gallon, from Perfect Plants, arrived May 2022) have been great houseplants over one winter and thrived outdoors (in pots) over two summers up here. They have not been fussy about soil (Miracle Gro moisture control), fertilizer (osmocote plus and occasional Miracle Gro for acid loving plants), or water (wetter during summer, drier during winter). They've been outdoors from late May to October. No insect or disease issues to date. Their fronds do not like my windy location, but that "damage" has not slowed them down. root pruning of tropical palm trees
by Marc Suhor- 2 replies

Dear forum, I ask you to share your experiences with root pruning of (sub-) tropical palm trees. Unfortunately, due to lack of space, it is no longer possible for me to choose ever larger planters for my home-grown palms. In the past I had no problems with root pruning with the following palms: phoenix dactylifera, Canary Date palm, Washingtonia robusta, Senegalese date palm (Phoenix reclinata) With my other palms I don't dare to prune the roots yet. When you see the damage to the leaves, it is usually too late or no longer reversible. You may have already pruned the roots of the following palms or have the knowledge/experience to prune the roots of such palms…

Phoenix roebellini in a sump bath
by Rickybobby- 2 replies

Hey everyone here is my two pots of Pygmy dates. One pot has 4 one has 3. Anyways just to show what I do for my indoor winter setup up here in 43 degrees north southern Ontario I put my potted palms over my sump pit and water the heck out of them and not worried about making a mess in a bathroom or clean up. The pump sucks up everything just about. One thing to note and I’ve said it before Pygmys are bulletproof up here. They don’t mind moist roots they survive just fine and grow like weeds for me indoors with no issues

Bottle Palm

We have been looking for a nice big indoor showy specimen for our family room and while at Lowe's a few weeks ago stumbled upon some really large ones for a surprisingly great price. Since coming home, the main spear has come up quite a ways, and we were treated with it unfurling just a few days ago.. Can't wait to see this one grow up! Brand new spear unfurling! Wish I lived in a climate that I could do these outside, but inside will have to do.

What is this??
by DreaminAboutPalms- 2 replies

Found this seedling growing in my potted majesty a month or so ago when it was just producing it’s first spear. When I transplanted it initially I thought it was a washie based off the seed and root structure, but the leaves are way thinner and longer than my other 100+ washie seedlings of same age . I also have no idea where the seed came from because all mine I have germinated this year I have accounted for. Anyone seen anything like this or guesses what it is?

Size: 140cm * 100cm * 30cm Outdoors, semi-shade and winter temperatures of -8°C The 30cm width can be the most decisive. It can be 1 or more palm trees. About 400 liters of soil. Height, without limit. Thanks!

Good morning, In a few weeks I will be potting up my community pot of Sabal miamiensis. I've been digging around and searching the site a bit; but I just figured I would cut to the chase and ask for advice on what a good mix would be. I have a bunch of components around and was figuring I'd head to a couple stores for additional materials. What I currently have is: Coco coir peat Pearlite lava rock (small) "play sand" Topsoil from my local garden center (mostly sand, loam and mulch/ bark/ organics. I've put many many yards of this stuff in my yard over the years). Thanks for your thoughts.

Strange colors
by BeyondTheGarden- 2 replies

6 weeks ago I got a dozen Chamaedorea radicalis seedlings from Jeff at Floribunda. Within the first week of potting, a lot of them faded to this yellow-gray hue (on the right of the picture). I thought, maybe they just didn't take the stress of being bare-rooted and shipped to a new environment, and were going to fade to a slow death. But in 6 weeks they haven't appeared to decline, and seem like they are fine despite their color? The picture doesn't quite reflect how dramatic the color difference is between the left and right examples.

Morning from Spain! These 2 palms came sometime ago from a pot of too many Elegans. I realised that they could be another specie, and I separated them from the rest of Elegans seedlings. They grow incredibly fast. Any idea of what are their surnames? Thanks

Please help!!!! Licuala fronds are very yellow
by Palmistry- 2 replies

Hi!! thank you for reading!! I really love this palm and am hoping to save it! My licuala fronds have been dramatically yellowing over the past 2 months and I was hoping it would be a minor issue that would resolve, but it seems to be getting worse. Below are possible culprits: 1) the yellowing started after a 1 tsp application of sulpomag. I have not applied the sulpomag since. This was in mid may 2) overexposure to the air conditioner: i left the palm in my room for a few nights with the air conditioner running. I realize this probably wasn’t the best move, and have stopped since. Not sure if that was the cause. 3) humidity! I…

The Spring Burn-off is Done, New Growth Incoming!
by Funkthulhu- 2 replies

So, I have put everything out on the balcony on and off (freeze warnings) for almost the last month. But, we have had our first back to back 80F degree days (90 degrees actually) this weekend. Of course, on one of the days earlier this week I was away from home and some of my previously indoor-only palms got full Nebraska sun for about 14 hours. Everybody had plenty of water, but all of the newest leaves went silver in an afternoon. Now they're not just down and brown, they're crispy, whispy and light tan at this point. But the like the Phoenix rising from the ashes... I have a LOT of new growth! This happens in some way every year, but it seems the burnin…

Hi There I have an issue with my indoor Palm. I've had it for about 6 years and it's always been super happy in the same position. My issue is that new fronds have appeared but are not opening after a number of months. The only variable here is that I've repotted it in a bigger pot. I've attached some pictures. Hoping I might be able to get some suggestions from this fine group. Thanks Symon

Describing palm sizes by container size
by D. Morrowii- 2 replies
I’m having trouble understanding palm sizes as they are commonly referred to by container size. I’ve purchased palms in 4” containers that were larger than ones in 1 gallon even from the same supplier. Is there some general criteria to determine what size you palm is? Or is there a good reference or book that explains maturity stages of a palm? Is it just root space or growth? Reading through the forum I’ve seen it brought up that a 15 gallon palm is a good safe size to plant out a marginal palm or that a certain palm was planted out at 3 or 5 gallons. What are some practical ways to think about this?

Repotting Outdoor Dypsis Lutescens
by ewaforevah- 2 replies
I'm a newb, looking to this wonderful forum for advice. I picked up a bunch of 3gal and 7gal dypsis lutescens for outdoor privacy. Since it's in a concrete area, they will remain in a pot of some sort. Right now they're 4-5ft and I'll need them to reach the 6-8ft range. Do I need to repot them? I'm perfectly content leaving them in the black nursery pots if repotting isn't necessary. What are the potential issues if I do keep them in the original pots? If I do repot them, any tips, advice or good resources on how to do it? How tricky is it to do and not kill the palm? Thanks!
