Winter growing / storage

I am hoping to hear about your experiences of how to handle palms indoors during the winter. I know that even those who don't grow palms indoors year round like me, often take them indoors in the winter. I can also imagine that some are more sensitive than other. I have read that if I keep the temperature high (~22C/72F like my flat normally is), many palms might produce lanky and distorted growth. So I'm thinking of lowering the temperature as much as I can, and/or adding artificial light. One advantage of lower indoors temp would be that humidity will be a bit higher, but if it's a really cold winters day I don't think a few degrees lower will help much. I have palm…

I got this Areca vestiaria years ago as a germinated seed from RPS. It's the only one of a group that's thrived. It's always been indoors in a room that only gets morning light/heat (i.e., my sunroom faces east). Some of the offshoots from the main stem declined and I've had to spray for scale now and then, but otherwise it's done OK under a relatively low-humidity, shady, highly variable temperature regime. It's my suspicion, beyond mere acclimation, that success with certain palm genera under less than ideal [challenging?] growing conditions may be dependent on the specific genetics of an individual palm.

Best potting soil mixes

Hi, There are not that many potting soils to choose from in this city, even store bought very well draining soil for succulents and cactus seems to cause some problems. The soil I buy contains pine bark chips, some coco fiber and peat moss. I add perlite to that mix. It seems the water drains quite fast but the main concern is that the mix absorbs a lot of water which is squeezable. I've just recently repotted Arch. Alexandrea I had bought 2weeks ago and 2 of its leaves lost the green, withered with pale green. Could it be due to the soil or something else? What would be your best well draining potting soil mix? Stuff I could get here: vermiculite, per…

Did I over pot?

My S.Romanzoffiana is shooting that new spear like crazy, her roots were ridiculous out the bottom AND the top, and she couldn’t stay upright in the wind. I know eventually they like big boy pots, but did I do it too early? @Pal Meir and @PalmatierMeg should I go smaller? My mix is very very free flowing especially with the bottom leca layer, and the terracotta is evaporating some, but i just hope there is enough air getting in there.

Potting up Hyophorbe lagenicaulis

I had some good root growth over the last year with my bottle palms. Time to put them into something bigger. I'm wondering if this is their last pot; it's pretty heavy now. Does anyone have any really developed bottles still in pots? Like with the really bulbous bottoms they are famous for?

Pygmy Date Pot Size
by RyanJ- 1 follower

Hey all, we recently bought a pot that has an 18" opening on top, and is about 21" wide in the middle since it has a curved outward shape. We bought a Pygmy Date that came in a 10" temporary planter and was wondering if our pot is way too big for this size. We could repot this in our 14" pot and buy a new pygmy that comes in a 17" planter if that's better, was just curious if there is any hope for this plant in our large pot. We did fill the pot about 1/3 with plastic bottles, then potting fabric, so it is well ventilated and has a draining hole in the bottom. Thanks!

Easy Office Palm

Hi y’all, new to Palmtalk, currently have a Phoenix roebelenii and a Chamaerops humilis in outdoor pots at home (zone 8a, the Phoenix is garaged during winter nights). I’m looking to add a (low-maintenance) office palm to the mix. Office situation is as follows: - One large, east facing window (whose blinds I keep closed, so it’s rather dark). - AC is run at night during the summer, turned off during the day. I don’t run the heat in the winter, but my coworkers run theirs, so my office stays above 60 or so. Is there anything meeting these criteria? If not, what do I need to change? I’ve heard Chamaedorea elegans is pretty rugged, would that be a good plant …

Pygmy date palm two spears pulled, frond pulled

I have three indoor pygmy date palms, two spears pulled and a green frond from the crown, i took a light to see what's going on, it looks all white in there, I think it may have been from cold damage from when it dropped to the 20s in november, it did show signs of growth after that and all the three of them recovered, but two weeks ago or a week I think, I was gonna prune them, but then I realized the fronds on one of the palms looked a bit off on it than the other two palms, and I checked the spears and both two spears pulled, they didn't smell, but they were as deep to the base of the trunk. Yesterday I checked it out, and a green healthy looking on the same palm in …

Drowning in a Giant Pot
by Frond-friend42- 1 follower

I noticed in another stream that juvenile palms and other plants get dead from too big of a pot, for some reason. How does this happen. Why does too much pot lead to death. I would think you could still give enough water and....oh....thats it. I think the roots aren't clearing the well watered pot quick enough, and so it has a tendency to not dry out quick enough, and literally "drown" in too big a pot with to high water content. Any other thoughts or theories are welcome of course, as to the negative impact of a too-big pot.

Dypsis (?) potted inflorescence/seed stalk
by Funkthulhu- 13 replies

I've had palms in pots for about 10 years now, and I've never had one flower for me. Now I have this pot in my office and it has put out about a half dozen of these stalks in the last few months. Now, when I bought this it was labeled as a Dysis lutescens. But, now that it's popping these out I can't find a picture online to match it. My questions are these: 1. Is this actually a D. Lutey? 2. Are these mature seeds? (i.e. will they germinate) If no to #1, what do I have?

Germinating seeds

Hi, I just want or germinate some seeds and I wanted to create some thread where I can post some pics and sometimes maybe ask about your advices. So currently I'm trying to germinate seeds of Phoenix canariensis and archontophoenix alexandrae (I'm obsessed with this one). In the past I tried to germinate many other palm tree seeds, and I was successful with Phoenix canariensis, Washingtonia robusta and archontophoenix alexandrae (but this one died after few days ) I put my seeds 9 days ago into the wet paper towel and into the plastic box, that I put on the heater in my bathroom. The temperature is around 30 degrees. Today i found out, that two of my see…

Cyrtostachys renda Problems

Hi Guys, I thought I was getting on top of the problems with my lipstick palms, but they seem to be struggling again. After around 6 months of no problems, I noticed a few of the fronds on one palm has started to dry up. Seemed like it is starting at the tip of the fronds and working the way down. I gave one a little "tug" and it pulled completely out. The bottom was brown and squishy. As you can see from the photos, they are looking pretty sad. Any help would be appreciated.

Brown spot on Chamadorea Metallica!
by RobustaEnvirons- 12 replies

A week or two ago I bought a Chamadorea Metallica from a seller on ebay. It arrived looking stunning! It still does looks the same. Although, the day it arrived I noticed that it had a small black spot on the trunk on the trunk (where the remnants of an old leaf had been). I asked the seller and they said that it was from when their was a stain on a leaf and it stayed on their too long. And they just should've removed the leaf, but didn't remove it quick enough. So they said its made a stain on the underlying leaf(s). So now the "stain" is spreading and its getting worse. How many leaf layers could a stay like this go through. The seller doesn't know what it could be othe…

Solitary/single trunk dypsis lutescens.

Hey guys! Over the past year and a half I've been playing around with different methods of growing d. lutescens. Seems like they are kind of Honda Civic of indoor palms in the sense that they are very common and inexpensive, so I started with a few clusters of approx 20-30 small seedlings and split some of them up individually into their own pots as well as some into smaller groups. I'm a big fan of potted palms grown as solitary/single trunk specimens and I wanted to see how d. lutescens would do in that format, especially because I feel like I've never actually seen them grown to maturity as single trunk palms, seems like they are pretty much exclusively grown in clu…

Germination of palms

Hey guys I had question about germinating palms. First off I'm currently germinating a few Mexican Fans and Windmill palms . The Mexican fans have sprouted and are slowly growing tiny green green fronds. They are doing okay ,but they thing I notice is I see these little tiny black bugs walking around the soil . What are they? Are they harmful to the palms? How do I get rid of them? Is there anything I could buy online to kill these little bugs with harming the baby palms? These bugs have already shown up so advice on how to prevent them or lectures on what I did wrong doesn't really help at this time. Please let me know and thanks.

What's wrong with my Kentia palm?

Hello everyone! I bought it about one month ago, had a few totally brown leaves which I've removed from the bottom. I'm watering it once per week after I make sure the first 2 inches of soil are dry. The humidity is low, only 40% (already ordered a humidifier for it), I'm spraying some water on it each morning that I hope it helps. What are these brown/black spots on the stems? Should I worry?

Potting Tutorial.. Screens in your drain holes

Yesterday in a topic made in the main forum regarding concerns related to critters having access to the drain holes in potted palm / plant specimens, forum member @Gonzer made an excellent point, which, for one reason or another, isn't mentioned much.. but is a very valuable technique for helping to keep soil from slowly eroding from pots, and is a great way to keep out insects or other small animals which can get into the soil. Thought i might add to his point w/ some pictures.. While the topic was concerning Bees accessing the drain holes for a drink, here at least ..and in Florida, insects such as Ground dwelling Cockroaches, sometimes referred to as "Sand Roache…

Lodoicea maldivica coco de mer in conservatory

Lodoicea maldivica, coco de mer growing in the conservatory at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden. It’s grown a lot since I visited years ago. The top frond is pushing up against the glass ceiling. Even at this immature stage, truly gigantic proportions; seems so other-worldly as its scale and proportions have no relation to anything around it or to what most would encounter. The staff horticulturalist mentioned to me that they have plans to raise the glass ceiling to accommodate this specimen.

Saving my Rhapidophyllum hystrix

Dividing my Needle Palm Hi PalmTalk friends, I posted this thread http://www.palmtalk.org/forum/index.php?/topic/30138-can-potted-palms-be-root-pruned/ in 2011 about my Rhapidophyllum hystrix needing to be ‘maintained’ in a ‘smaller’ pot. At the time it was in a 22” pot. Now it’s in a 32” X 20” pot and it’s become too big to maneuver in & out of the house &my husband is in revolt. It was my very first palm & arrived in 2001 in a 2 gal pot from Gerry’s Jungle (not sure if it’s still around). Is there any way it can be divided? It has at least 6 ‘babies’ but the only way I could physically manage the division would be with something like a sa…

Kentia palm unhealthy! PLS HELP :)

Hi all Palm lovers, after doing a lot of research and study online, I still don’t have the complete answers to why my Kentia palm is dying on me. It’s been about 1 year and 8 months the palm is in the same pot as it came from its nursery, I was too scared to repot it, as I’ve heard they don’t like being disturbed. I’ve had spider mites issue for which I used neem oil and it did help, but the palm is getting brown patches now, new fonds look weak and I can’t see any new growth coming? is it time to repot? I recently moved houses and the position of this palm has changed a lot, it gets indirect light whole day. South facing window in Australia and hence not too ha…

Just bought a Lytocaryum hoehnei from net... it seems happy but the soil is normal potting soil and it was outside under other trees... I might want to bring it inside or keep it on deck and keep it in pot... @Pal Meir Pal and @Kai , I need your expertise here again : should I change the soil to your formula using Seramis? also I am not sure does it like direct sun like Lytocaryum insigne or not like Lytocaryum weddellianum? what else should I consider for this?
