Queen palms indoors

Does anyone have experience with Queen palms indoors? I'm thinking of adding a couple to the landscape, but bringing inside for 3-4 months of the year. My living room is south facing and double height. Or can they go in dim light in the garage?

I have these 2 large ceramic pots that I filled with regular potting soil, one has a tangerine tree and the other is vacant. I noticed that during long periods of rain they had a tendency to "flood", something that would take several days to "recover" from (which I learned was just sun evaporation). They remain moist even without rainfall or irrigation as well. The tangerine has been planted there for months and hasn't ran into any issues with root rot etc. Some investigation found that they in fact have zero drainage at all. I'm aware of some species (cyrtostachys renda for example) thriving in "aquatic" conditions, though this is a much different environment from,…

BOTTLE PALM FROND NOT OPENING
by Guest Dave L- 16 replies
- 4.6k views
Hello and thanks for reading. I have an all season tropical glasshouse with one bottle palm. It suffered some damage when it was planted in the grow bed, so I moved it into a pot. Before planting I had to remove one of the fronds and now it only has one full frond. There is another frond, but it is not opening. The palm has been in the same condition for almost a year and no signs that the 2nd frond is opening. I am fertilizing (Palm Gain 8-2-12) once/month now in an attempt to force the frond to open. There is no sign that the existing frond is dying, but I would like the second one to open. Any suggestions will be welcome. Two pics are attached.....one…

I wanted to know if anyone has any good grow lights before black friday is over, I own Haus Bright bulbs that do great and I recommend if anyone needs a good single LED bulb for a couple plants and it's on 9 hours a day, I use it over my coconut and it loves it but is their other good lights with better PPF with a larger space radius?

Hello PT I'm ordering a custom soil mix from Southeast Soil in Okahumpka,FL. They will make a custom blend if you order a min of 20+ cubic yards. What is your favorite base soil blend for growing palms in nursery pots. and if you know percentages that would be awesome? Example; 50% Florida peat, 20% Coconut coir, 15% .5" Pine bark, 10% Cypress Fines, 5% Cypress dust. Thank you Chris

Pinanga Coronata wilting and drying up
by Stethoscope- 16 replies

Hi everyone, I bought a 7' tall Pinanga Coronata and since it has arrived (approximately 7 weeks ago) it has been slowly wilting away with picture evidence below. I have tried to increase its watering but am hesitant to do so now as the soil is certainly NOT dry and the leaves are slowly turning dark and wilting and drying up completely before falling off. It's in a 5 gallon pot with drainage holes and apart from the original dirt it came in, I mixed it with very well draining loose soil with plenty of perlite. There are a few red spider mites on some leaves but nothing overwhelming. A picture below shows a healthy stem and another that is slowly dying. Suggestions?

So, a few days ago I set up my complete Lytocaryum collection for a photoshoot. I'm sorry but I still refuse to acnowledge the fact these four species have been thrown into the Syagrus genus. Also, I will not be getting the Syagrus genus complete. That would mean a kind of crowded living room when winter comes. This might be the very first picture ...ever... displaying all four Lytocaryum species at the same time. The large weddellianum in the back is currently producing it's 2nd and 3rd flower stalk. I dedicated a seperate topic on this plant. Then left is the insigne producing its 8th and partial pinnate leaf, this plant was grown by Pal Meir, who l…

Joey palm (Johannesteijsmannia altifrons) needs repotting

I was wondering why my potted Joey palm (Johannesteijsmannia altifrons) was not sitting level on the shelf, until I picked it up and noticed roots growing out and under the pot (photo below). Am dreading having to repot it knowing how they dislike any root disturbance. However, last autumn I was having to water it every 4 days or so and it used to be able to go 10 days without watering, so I knew the time was coming for a bigger pot. I last repotted it 2 years ago when I adopted it in April 2017 (Photo below). When I received it from grower it was potted in a wet peaty mixture, awful media for the plant. I repotted it in 2017 and the root ball completely crumbled and …

After looking at how many different species of palms that I have in pots and noticing they represent many genera beginning with nearly all the letters of the alphabet I thought I would share some. Not meant to be an exhaustive list but tried not to include the more common palms. Most of these will eventually be planted out in zone 10a although some will stay in containers. A is for Areca: B is for Beccariophoenix: C is for Calyptrocalix:

Looking online and I can't really find any at a somewhat reasonable price. What would be a good alternative to use for getting better CEC and water retention growing in Pumice? I see they sell expandable clay pellets for cheap, there is also something called Arcilla Potasica/ pottasium clay anyone know what that might be? I added a photo here of the pottasium clay:

Indoor Roebelenii Problems
by OriolesRock100- 1 follower

Hey, I am having some issues with my phoneix roebeleniis that are indoors in pots for the winter, and I can't seem to figure out what exactly the problem is... I'm aware that they enjoy high heat and humidity ideally, but I have seen many accounts that they are usually good potted palms that tolerate overwintering indoors no problem. I have a large triple-planted roebelenii that I bought from home depot for $20 which is struggling - the middle of the three trunks has spear pulled (I applied copper fungicide twice), and all the fronds have turned pale and "crispy" (don't know how else to describe). They're still green, but they have closed up and feel very stiff compared t…

Who Grows Larger Sabal minor In Pots?

Who here grows larger (as in older) Sabal minor in pots? How is their growth rate? I might put a bunch in pots because I may end up moving (locally) and it would suck if I planted a bunch in the ground just to leave them in the next year.

What would you do? Can I Repot Chambeyronia macrocarpa seedling now or wait until spring. I think that pot is too small or is it? There is still a long winter here (Finland) before spring comes. I have growth lights in the process and that seedling is growing fast. In fact, I have five seedlings at the same stage. Now the pot is 1.6 liters and the new pot is 11 liters.Thoughts?

These guys wether hybrid or not. Less than 2 weeks after sowing with a heat mat in a baggie you get 95 percent germination wether I give them heat or cool they do awesome some moderate light and doesn’t matter. If I give them wet soil or dry I have amazing success. Such a great beginner Palm. Pictured is my washy that I keep in a decorative pot and repotted today due to roots pushing out the. Bottom.

My indoor container ranch has transitioned outdoors

This is year 2 for me doing an indoor ranch. Last year I kept everything Indoors. This year I have in vested in a folding table that I can put in the shed in fall. So anyway here is my palms minus trachycarpus which are still inside and my (picks) are in decorative pots by the pool. The spot has been chosen for a few reasons. Eh it’s on the east side of the house in a courtyard. So it’s sheltered from the strong west winds here. Also it will get some sun from 10am till mid aft and give them shade as well. But I’m hoping the heat will be good we had a bad cold wet spring but now we are good into summer. 80s everyday and I hope to get them to take off more now than they wer…

Hello, I am growing a Sabal palmetto in a pot indoors year round and would like some tips on how to take care of it. It’s my first time growing a Sabal palm indoors! Does anyone have any experience on maintaining a Sabal palm indoors? I’d like to hear some input and share some photos of your Sabal palmetto growing in an indoor environment. What does the temperature range have to be and humidity? I know Sabal palms like a lot of heat and humidity. I am in Central Jersey about a zone 6b. The palmetto palm stays by an east facing window and receives bright direct light during the morning and indirect light during the afternoon. The indoor temp is usually in the low to m…
