Majestic Palms in Pots
by SLUGGO- 1 follower

Hi All, I've had majestic palms in pots for a year now sitting on the balcony. They've all gained some height, but all consistently have brown fronds like the photo attached. I've used a regular potting mix and add a palm fertiliser a few times a year. I generally water once a week during the colder months and twice a week during summer. Soil always feels more on the drier side rather than soggy. I can't work out what's causing it, over watering, under watering? I have pots at either end of the house and they all have the same brown fronds. I was thinking to take them out and re-pot back into the same 400mm pots adding some wetting agent and extr…

Washingtonia: why I think such a great starter palm

These guys wether hybrid or not. Less than 2 weeks after sowing with a heat mat in a baggie you get 95 percent germination wether I give them heat or cool they do awesome some moderate light and doesn’t matter. If I give them wet soil or dry I have amazing success. Such a great beginner Palm. Pictured is my washy that I keep in a decorative pot and repotted today due to roots pushing out the. Bottom.

I'm doing cocos again!
by Kai- 30 replies

Found this nice little cocos in my local gardencentre for €10. I put it in the old pot of Pal's Lytocaryum insigne #1404 with some of the famous seramis pinebark mix. Some time ago I already decided that when I'd come across one of these, I'd give it another try. I still feel the pain of having to let my previous cocos go when I moved to Amsterdam. In 8 years time it had grown into a palm of stature and I still miss it. Hope this little guy will in time grow into a worthy substitute! Wish me luck everybody!

How Deep Should I Pot Up Palm Seedlings?
by PalmTreeDude- 2 replies

How deep should I pot up my palm seedlings? I need to repot all of these in a better draining mix and simply because I believe they are too deeply potted now. How deep should I pot them? I was thinking about this deep (picture), the blue line represents the soil level I am thinking of potting them up at, does this seem right?

Licuala Ramsayi soil & water preferences 1 2
by David_Sweden- 1 follower

My main question would be: For palms that normally live in swamps (of which I have Licuala Ramsayi, Licuala Peltata var Sumawongii and a Lipstick Palm), I would assume they are impossible to overwater and can stand permanently with the whole root soaked in water and liking it, and don't care about the aeration of soil, so that e g clay or densely packed peat would work great, since they (at least the Licualas) have aerial roots, which I assume supply the root system with oxygen properly even if the whole soil is under water? However I found two ten year old threads here and here with clear indications the do NOT like being permanently soaked in water, and even are ra…

howea belmoreana Howea belmoreana repotting project

I have two H. belmoreana that needed to be repotted before they got permanently stuck in their ceramic pots. Issues: the ceramic pots (see cobalt blue below) had openings with a lip that tapered slightly at top (I know, I know---horrible idea but I loved the pots). Also, pots were very heavy and with the palms increasing in size were getting to be too much weight. I decided on plastic pots for lighter weight. When I finally got the root ball out of each of the ceramic pots, I was surprised at how much of the root ball was concentrated at the bottom. See pic below - they really needed repotting. Does that root ball seem unusual to anyone? The new black plastic pots w…

My recent germination projects
by Fusca- 8 replies

These are palms that I have germinated from seed I collected personally over the past couple of years except for the Brahea brandeegii x armata and the Trithrinax acanthacoma I received from DoomsDave. I plan to plant nearly all of them in the ground at some point (many are ready now!) but I plan to keep the Howea forsteriana in a container since it is more shade tolerant. When I bought my house back in December it had zero plants in the yard (other than grass!) I received the seed in photo #21 that my boss brought back from Costa Rica so I have no clue what palm it is. The first leaf came out palmate and it seems to be growing very fast - anyone have any ideas? I pl…

Cool and Cold hardiness seedlings in pots
by LivistonaFan- 2 followers

hello, after a very long hot summer for Northern European standards, lows below 40 F are announced for next week (first time since April 7). Highs are still in the 60s. At what temperature should I take the palms later mentioned indoors? Because I have too many Syagrus romanzoffianas and date palms, it would be nice to know the temperature at which the biggest wimps at least start to get damaged (so I can choose the hardiest ones for planting out) ? Maybe you could write it in this way to get some system in it (you can also suggest a better system) : Name: lowest average maximum /minimum temperature at which the palm won't suffer any damage// ultima…

Lady palm, what am I doing wrong
by SilverMissy- 2 followers

Hello, I got this lady palm for free at a garden center because of how unhealthy it was. The leaves haven't changed and I've had it for a hear and a half now. The leaves have this green-yellow look to them. I have repotted it when I got it and I made the error of going too large of a pot size because of how pot bound it was but apparently they like it like that. Anyway, the leaves have not turned that deeper shade of green as you can see in the older leaves. I've been watering every 2 weeks because of the large pot size but the leaves still look like it has been too dry from the look of the leave tips. I feel like I'm doing something wrong. Any suggest…

Separating Chamaedorea metallica in a Pot
by MGD’s Plants- 1 follower

I recently bought a pot of Chamaedorea metallica, something I’ve wanted to try for a long time. The plants look good, and the price wasn’t bad, but I am concerned because there were actually 12 plants in one pot! Knowing that they are solitary, this bothers me. I actually pulled one small one out and repotted it, but the other 11 seemed firmly anchored in the pot, which is about 9” diameter at the top. Should I try to separate them? Or would it be better to just cut some off and leave a smaller number? What is the most that should be together in one pot? Thanks for your help!

Phoenix roebellini pot question

Hey everyone I bought this palm this year from a local nursery. Actually there are 4 in the clump. The roots were bursting out of the 3 gallon nursery pot and out of the top. So I put it in this decorative pot like all my bigger ones. Probably around 4 gallons. I wonder if maybe I should have put in something larger? It’s in a great spot drainage is great I have some fronds that yellow here and there and a ton of fresh green new spears opening. Just wonder what you guys think I tried to stay smaller cause I learned my lesson about too large of a pot and soil staying wet
