Can someone tell me what this palm is? I bought seeds as the washingtonia flifer and on the packaging was written, that it is washingtonia, but the seedling is over two years old and it does not look like washingtonia filifera. This palm is long leaves, but these are not yet proper leaves.

Understanding CEC (cation exchange capacity)
by David_Sweden- 7 replies

I wanted to know what is the best action if one by accident applies double dose of liquid fertilizer: If it is best to just re-water with correct dose, or flush it heavily, or what? Couldn't get any good response so I tried to calculate this myself, see below. I don't know if anyone here is into the "scientific approach" at all, if you are, you are welcome to comment, since I never tried to calculate this before. So here it goes: I have a palm with 9L soil which drinks (up to) 3L water, and I usually use half dose of a Swedish liquid fert called Blomstra at every watering, which contains about 5g/100mL of nitrogen of which 3g is NO3- and 2g is NH4+. (Note: NH4+ are "…

Width or Depth?
by GMann- 1 follower

What is more important for palms? The pot width or pot depth? For palms that sucker, does planting them in a wider pot encourage more suckering? I noticed that most containers for sale have slightly more width than depth (i.e. 20x17 or 13x10). Are those good dimensions for palms? There are a few though that are the opposite, i.e. tall pots that have more depth than width, how would a palm do in a pot like that? If you want to encourage palm height and trunking, do you need more depth or width?

Repot or not?
by cisco- 15 replies

What would you do? Can I Repot Chambeyronia macrocarpa seedling now or wait until spring. I think that pot is too small or is it? There is still a long winter here (Finland) before spring comes. I have growth lights in the process and that seedling is growing fast. In fact, I have five seedlings at the same stage. Now the pot is 1.6 liters and the new pot is 11 liters.Thoughts?

Brown spot on Chamadorea Metallica!
by RobustaEnvirons- 12 replies

A week or two ago I bought a Chamadorea Metallica from a seller on ebay. It arrived looking stunning! It still does looks the same. Although, the day it arrived I noticed that it had a small black spot on the trunk on the trunk (where the remnants of an old leaf had been). I asked the seller and they said that it was from when their was a stain on a leaf and it stayed on their too long. And they just should've removed the leaf, but didn't remove it quick enough. So they said its made a stain on the underlying leaf(s). So now the "stain" is spreading and its getting worse. How many leaf layers could a stay like this go through. The seller doesn't know what it could be othe…

Acephate
by Darold Petty- 8 replies
- 2.8k views
I'm having problems inside my greenhouse with mealybug, scale, and spider mites. I am considering the use of acephate, an 'old-school' systemic insecticide. (It is labeled for use against mites, also). In the past I have used a liquid form containing 9.4% acephate, costing $20 for one pint, (16 fluid ounces). I see that this chemical is also offered as a dry, soluble powder containing 97.4% acephate, costing $18 for 0.773 pounds. This form is usually labeled for use against fire ants. Are these two forms equivalent for use by foliar spraying, and wouldn't the dry powder be much more economical ? Thanks for any advice !

Anyone else successfully grow Ravenea rivularis

Anyone get their indoor Majesty palm to grow and open spears into fronds? Thing is I live at 7,000ft in Flagstaff a fairly dry mountain climate so its very dry indoors usually. It is in the kitchen which give it a little more moisture and heat from cooking. After 1 year of the original transplant from the nursery container I had used some cheap organic generic fruit fertilizer I had laying around. It's mostly bone meal and has a good amount of nitrates. At first I was thinking it had low potassium as the leaves were sort of yellow on some fronds but I checked the soil it wasn't too soggy so then I figured it just didn't get enough light and I pretty much left it there in …

Potting mix breakdown
by David_Sweden- 19 replies

Can anyone describe what a potting mix looks like once it starts to break down? Pics would be nice but also a description: Does most of it end up as small particles (like dust) that is washed out, or is it mostly fiber-like slimy stuff? does it usually happen very quickly or over several years? I read that soilless media of peat moss, bark or coir typically breaks down after 2-4 years, bark usually lasting the longest but when i starts to break down it can go fast, and coir 2nd longest. For peat there is the von Post scale, which describes the most broken down stages as H10 "No discernible plant structure; when squeezed, it all escapes between the fingers", H9 "…

First Inflorescence of C.cataractarum in my Office!
by Funkthulhu- 4 replies

Just wanted to post some pictures of my Cham. cat. because it has never bloomed before and this is the largest palm I've ever had do so. (so far) One popped last week, the other was open when I came in to work on Monday. Is there a way I can better promote pollination? I've kinda "simulated wind" with enough shaking to make them both dust each other up. Any other suggestions?

I tried twice to grow from seed Cyrtostachys Renda and Areca Vestiaria Maroon. They germinated very well. They grew very well for about 5 months. Then, they started to get burned tips (especially C. Renda) and spots on leaf (especially A. Vestiaria) and little by little, all of them died. Each try, same result. I suspect that I did something wrong with the soil. Everybody told me to increase humidity, I did it and they died faster. I repeat, died faster. Areca is definitely a faster grower than C. Renda and in my opinion, it looks better. I would like to try again to grow them from seed. What soil would you use for these species? Thanks. Cyrtostachys Renda …

Today I noticed that my Chamaedorea brachypoda is not as happy as it sued to be, not sure the cause but it was in my unheated green house all winter and unfortunately the same have been happening to some other potted palms in the same green house ... is it for lack of air circulation, lack of water or too much water ( I tried to avoid both though) ? but I am sure it was happy until last week...I just get it it out to open area so it might get more oxygen...

New pot (30 litre) and the new soil. What you think..is it OK?

I got this Areca vestiaria years ago as a germinated seed from RPS. It's the only one of a group that's thrived. It's always been indoors in a room that only gets morning light/heat (i.e., my sunroom faces east). Some of the offshoots from the main stem declined and I've had to spray for scale now and then, but otherwise it's done OK under a relatively low-humidity, shady, highly variable temperature regime. It's my suspicion, beyond mere acclimation, that success with certain palm genera under less than ideal [challenging?] growing conditions may be dependent on the specific genetics of an individual palm.

My Nano-Greenhouse

Only when a seedling has problems with its roots (as in this case with a L itapebiense seedling without a real radicle) I am using a (kind of) greenhouse. In all other cases my window sills (for seedlings) or my living room (around my home office for bigger ones) is enough (without any humidifier), no matter if the palms are »tropical« (as e.g. Licuala) or not.

Spindle Palm?

Hi all, bought this palm as Hyophorbe verschaffeltii last November. Please can someone confirm whether this is what it says it is? I have seen pics of young spindle palms and the base of them looks almost black. I also saw a pic of a Pseudopheonix sargentii seedling yesterday, and it looked the spitting image of this one. Thanks
