So, a few days ago I set up my complete Lytocaryum collection for a photoshoot. I'm sorry but I still refuse to acnowledge the fact these four species have been thrown into the Syagrus genus. Also, I will not be getting the Syagrus genus complete. That would mean a kind of crowded living room when winter comes. This might be the very first picture ...ever... displaying all four Lytocaryum species at the same time. The large weddellianum in the back is currently producing it's 2nd and 3rd flower stalk. I dedicated a seperate topic on this plant. Then left is the insigne producing its 8th and partial pinnate leaf, this plant was grown by Pal Meir, who l…

Greenhouse lighting for palms?
by Ben in Norcal- 1 follower

Not sure where to post this, but this is probably the best fit... Does anyone use supplemental lighting to keep palms growing in a greenhouse throughout the winter? I have a small greenhouse which I can heat in the winter...but light is presumably a limiting factor. Has anyone tried to keep things actively growing in the winter, and if so what lighting do you use? Interested in whether anyone has success doing this, and recommendations for maximizing energy efficiency if so!

Help me choose potting media
by Missi- 8 replies

Please visit this link and help me choose the best media and size of media for potting tropical understory palms (keeping good drainage and proper pH in mind): https://www.repotme.com/orchid-media/index.html There are so many types of bark, clay, stone (granite, pumice), coconut husks, coconut chips, coconut coir it boggles my mind. Would moss or charcoal within the mix be beneficial to palms or are those mainly for growing orchids? I'm tired of trying "this" and "that" so I'd like to get a good formula down.

Watering Rhopalostylis baueri
by David_Sweden- 11 replies

Hi. My Baueri is very thirsty. I had it for 2 years and repotted it a few times and it has now reached what I intend to be the final pot size. Until a few weeks ago it needed watering every 3 days but since recently it requires water every 2 days. I can not combine normal life with plants that require watering more than every 3 days (my even bigger Kentia requires it every 6 days) so I'll either have to give it away or find a different watering solution. I just started testing putting a bowl instead of saucer under it (see pic), and after I completed watering I add water to 1-2 cm from the brim. This water lasts about 1½ days so that I have to water every 4 days. I w…

Yep, water pipe! I was told years ago that clear pots are not desirable, some plants are fussier than others. Not quite sure how I will do the transplant, very carefully I guess.

Dypsis (?) potted inflorescence/seed stalk
by Funkthulhu- 13 replies

I've had palms in pots for about 10 years now, and I've never had one flower for me. Now I have this pot in my office and it has put out about a half dozen of these stalks in the last few months. Now, when I bought this it was labeled as a Dysis lutescens. But, now that it's popping these out I can't find a picture online to match it. My questions are these: 1. Is this actually a D. Lutey? 2. Are these mature seeds? (i.e. will they germinate) If no to #1, what do I have?

Roots

At the beginning of this year I started growing A. Alexandraes in 25g pots. They have grown so fast from 3 gallon pots that they are already putting roots out the bottom. So the question is... what do you do with roots that go out the bottom? Cut them? leave them if they are on concrete?

Jut received my Howea forsteriana yesterday ... it was in a plastic pot ( 40cmX 32cm = 40 Litre) , I bought a wooden ( half barrel) pot ( 55cmX38cm = 90 Litre) : As Pal suggestion, I used the mixture of "Plus Premium Potting Mix" 2 part, " Garden soil" 1 Part and "Seramis" 1 part ...I used Leca at the bottom of the pot to improve and maintain the drainage ... It was very difficult to bring it out of old pot...it should have been there for long time... It took me 3 hours but the results was good ...I hope it like its new home in old pot " Wooden ( Half Barrel ) Pot : with Leca layer at the bottom... Mixing th…

Pests

I have several tropical understory palms of which I keep in pots on my roofed lanai. Lately, I have been having mealybugs located around the area of where the new spears come out of the crown. Unfortunately, on a couple of my palms, treating with spray insecticide or simply applying some hydrogen peroxide has resulted in rot or spear pull. When I can, I will place the plant outside in some sun in hopes it clears it up (forget ladybugs, I rarely see them around). In some plants, that doesn't even help. In other plants, I can't place them in sun. Being that this is summer and it is happening, I'm kind of sweating winter. I'm kind of at a loss here on how to keep my und…

I have this area in front of our house...the ground is a big almost flat rock so no way I can plant something in the ground... I am thinking of planting one or two good size palms in big pots and place them there... I am thinking of one of or both Howea as attached , one Howea forsteriana and one Howea Belmoreana... but if there is other suggestion I might consider... I need to keep them there almost forever so I need to chose the types wisely...it will get some full sun during some hours of days... then I need to think of choosing right pot or barrel ... Thanks for any inputs Mohsen

Browning / Yellowing of Leaves
by Liam150987- 5 replies

I have recently purchased two Mexican fan palm trees, planted them in pots with compost, I have been watering these daily to aid their growth. I have noticed in the last four days that the leaves are starting to go yellow and brown and are starting to flop over. Can anyone tell me why this is occurring? Am I over watering the trees? Is the compost not sufficient? Many thanks in advance

Cold Climate Zone Pushing/Zone shifting

Here in my home town (Toledo Ohio/USDA Zone 6b) I took a walk around a botanical garden we have here. The place is called the "Toledo Botanical Garden", and is host to over at least a 1,000 different plant and tree species. They have an on-site greenhouse with very knowledgeable experts, and the whole place is southern-oriented. I noticed they have tropical, subtropical, and other kinds of specimens growing there. I was surprised to find them there since they don't seem as if they could survive here. I saw what looks like one rather large potted Sago, and many I don't know what kind they are. The large Sago has such as large pot, I couldn't imagine how they move it …

Top-Heavy C.costaricana
by Funkthulhu- 14 replies
- 1.4k views
So, not very long or exciting story made a whole lot shorter. I was turning pots and rearranging in my office. When I picked up the C.costaricana it wasn't supported by the palms around it anymore and it toppled. Didn't snap, and I don't think I caused much if any damage, but it did lay over from the base. Insufficient roots? Health issues? Is this species known for not standing up on its own? It's currently held up by its neighbors again, but I'll be getting some dowels and pipe-cleaners this weekend. Suggestions? (this should in in Palms in Pots?!? how did it get here?)

A CIDP I once had
by Howeadypsis- 6 replies

I just found this old photo from around 2006 or 07. It shows a CIDP I bought as a houseplant. I had young kids back then and I realised it had to go outside because of those thorns (I forget the technical name for them) . Unfortunately it didn't do well out there and I had no greenhouse at the time and it deteriorated. I know these things are thorny but I can't help wanting to grow them. Hence why I have P.dac seedlings on the go... I'm drawn to what I can't have!

Washingtonia Robusta leaf yellowing
by RobustaEnvirons- 1 reply

Hello everyone, recently I've noticed that my one particular leave on my Washingtonia Robusta has been steadily turning yellow. Its been gradually turning yellow, and hasn't come on all of a sudden. I recently last week (with the arrival of summer temps; 80s & lower 90s) began putting all my Washies outside in the front yard. There they receive sunshine beginning around 12:38pm until about 8:30pm-9pm. I leave them out there until after the sun sets and then I bring them inside my sun-room for the night. Then, the next morning I check the hourly forecast and if there is going to be sunshine (which since its summer weather it has been sunny) I put them out for the day. …

Back in November I sowed 9 date stones from store bought dates. 3 germinated and the first one took off. It's now June and it's pushing a second leaf. The other two are much smaller, number 3,the last one out, seems stunted. I may have to unpot it and check the roots on that one. I'm currently keeping them in my new small greenhouse (early fathers day present)

Palms in Thin/Tall Pots
by nitsua0895- 14 replies

I have a bunch of W. Robusta seedlings planted close together so I got some 3 inch wide, 9 inch tall band size pots. Is this suitable for most palm species? I imagine it's perfect for W. Robusta because of how deep the taproot goes but I wasn't sure if other species had roots that needed more of a wide pot.
