Last indoor palm

All grown up and moving out. We have had this Chamaedorea metallica inside for over 10 years now, it has flowered most years but we cut the stalks off before they got too big and consequently don't know what sex it is. It surprisingly, lived very happily in plain cheap potting mix in that big pot right up until last year when it soil finally became too compacted and soggy and exhausted I suppose. You can see the second last few leaves came out smaller. It had not been fertilized or any soil amendment right up until last year when the leaves reduced size. I then repotted it in a very loose mix. I am now just waiting to see what the flower stalk that is developing is, …

Dypsis cabadae slow growth problem
by Davidl- 0 replies
I have some Dypsis cabadae in one gallon pots for approximately three years. They seem very slow growing having only produced one frond in a year. Some of the new fronds are stunted similar to boron deficiency. I have them in some miracle grow potting soil with a little sand added to keep the pot from falling over. I water them everyday when they don’t get rain and they are in partial sun and color is dark green. I fertilized three times this year but nothing has gotten better with them. Any suggestions?

Hello everyone, and thank you for allowing me to be a part of this group. My name is John and I'm relatively new to growing palms (or tying to..lol). I live in Bay City MI. I currently have 6 Chamaedorea Elegan's (Neanthe Bella Palm) that are growing like crazy. I know these are pretty easy to grow and for a beginner like me I'm pretty happy with the results so far. I've recently started some Hyophorbe Lagenicaulis ( Bottle Palm) seeds, as well as some Psychotria Eleta's (Hot Lip's). I also have an order of Coco's Nucifera( coconut palms), Bismarcka Nobilis (Bismarck Palm's), and last but not least Crytostachys Renda (Lipstick Palm's). My questions are With the winter wea…

Hi I just received some great looking seedlings from an IPS member. I want to buy some of these tall pots online as box stores don't have them. (I am USA based) Can anybody point me in the right direction on "Thatzone site or that bay site"? Also I have some sand on hand when they installed my pool 4 years ago. Is it ok to use that instead of perlite to repot? Do I mix at 50% sand or perlite and 50% potting mix? Thxs a lot Pat

This is getting close to as large a pot as I can put this in and move in during the winter. Will the Mule palm decline if it gets root bound? it is in a 20" x 20" pot. It is around 8' tall. Ball cap in photo for size reference. I can possibly get it into one size larger pot but will be difficult to move.

Hyophorbe lagenicalus

Hi I’m after some advice. I’m pretty new to palm care and have taken an interest since I have moved house. I bought a bottle palm seedling from an eBay seller as being in the uk you don’t find these palms very easily. It came in a 4in pot in 50/50 perlite and I’m guessing cactus mix. Roots were sticking out the bottom so I repotted in a mix of fine seed compost, vermiculite and cacti mix. Plant is situated in a sunny window sill and room temp is never below 20 c. Problem is over the last few weeks the leaves are browning and dying off. I only ever water when soil is dry and have fertilised once with palm focus this summer, had the plant around 2 months. I really don’t wan…

Potted Cabbage Palm
by Ann Louise- 5 replies

I'm a newbie here so please be forgiving. I recently purchased a Cabbage Palm as an anniversary gift for my husband. We live in the northern part of Middle Tennessee (zone 7A) so for now, we are keeping the 4-foot tall palm in a very large exterior-glazed terracotta pot. I have a greenhouse where we will overwinter the tree. We would like to eventually put it in the ground but I don't know if that's going to be possible here. I haven't been able to find any information about potted cabbage palms. If anyone has any advice whatsoever, please feel free to pass it along.

Chambeyronia macrocarpa root ball help
by Beachpalm- 1 reply

Had a 20 inch tall plant delivered today from Florida and the root ball lost a large amount of dirt, about half during transplant. I carefully held what dirt I could in the root system and gently placed it back into a hole with the new plant. The amount of dirt lost was minimal just the unraveling of the root ball holding the dirt together. I should have kept the planter intact and maybe drilled more holes to prevent this ...and just lowered the temp planter into a larger pot. Any ideas on how to care for the plant would be appreciated. Going into a sunroom with steady heat and humidity for the winter in Maryland. Plant lights also. I know n…

Help me nurse this palm plant back to life
by Newtoplants- 1 reply

I’m really not a plant person, but I found this half dead palm plant in the dumpster last spring and felt bad for it since it still had some green leaves. It’s been on my covered patio all summer and miraculously survived. Now that it’s getting into fall, I think it needs to come indoors. It’s a fighter so I’m willing to try to nurse it back to health since it’s survived outside with minimal care all summer. I asked about it on another forum that isn’t at all plant related and thought since it’s been identified as a palm, this would be a better forum for more specific advice. The plant is down to 2 leaves, one has some brown edges. I have been watering sporadically a…

Grow bags

Has anyone used these type of grow bags to grow palms ? I have thought about using them to put climate tender palms in the ground then dig them back up before the first cold snap. Thinking i can enjoy the palm in the landscape instead of the container ranch. https://www.greenhousemegastore.com/containers-trays/bags-pouches/root-pouch-grey-fabric-pot-3-4-year?returnurl=%2fcontainers-trays%2fbags-pouches%2f With a regular nursery pot im afraid roots could possibly get thru the drain holes, so when i pull the palm back out , it could get root damage and possible death. Just throwing this out as an idea, anyone's opionion or pros and cons would be appreciated…

Germination of palms

Hey guys I had question about germinating palms. First off I'm currently germinating a few Mexican Fans and Windmill palms . The Mexican fans have sprouted and are slowly growing tiny green green fronds. They are doing okay ,but they thing I notice is I see these little tiny black bugs walking around the soil . What are they? Are they harmful to the palms? How do I get rid of them? Is there anything I could buy online to kill these little bugs with harming the baby palms? These bugs have already shown up so advice on how to prevent them or lectures on what I did wrong doesn't really help at this time. Please let me know and thanks.

Rabbits love bismarkia nobilis

So I have 2 Bismarck seedlings. Just over a year old. They have been on my outside gravel play area. I know rabbits did this they have water my wife’s precious flowers before. I’m lucky he spared me the spear other wise this plant would probably be a goner. He ate half of my other one as well but spared a lot more. Anyone else have rabbits eating there palms. See members on here said put your seedlings on the ground but all my little guys I put them on a table outside just because of this all you can see is a little spear here. A day ago there was 2 12” fronds

How do you Decide, who Lives and who Dies?

I'm moving again. Finally back into a house, not an apartment, with floor to ceiling windows on the East side, smaller high windows elsewhere. However, I'm now going to be sharing space with my beloved. As much as she would probably let me, I can't bring myself to hoard all of our space with palm trees. I have all that space in front of East windows, but I also have to take into account the big pots outside that will need to come inside in the next couple months. I have a number of "winners", like my oldest palms, my dwarf date, my wild collected Veitchia, and several others that are happy and healthy. However, I also have about a dozen pots of seedlings in va…
