Automatic Container Watering
by D. Morrowii- 6 replies

I like to hand water but sometimes I’m not able and lately some of the palms in the cones have become extra leafy making it difficult. So I’ve been messing with some options for auto watering. These 2 different methods were fairly inexpensive to put together since its just tube, fittings and stakes. Except for the 1.5” diameter cones where I used 2 micro sprinklers. For the 2.5” cones I just poked a small hole in the 1/8” tube with a safety pin. A mini valve ahead of main connection helps to adjust the sprays. Then I just added it to the existing drip system. Anyone else doing something similar? Am I over thinking it lol? Opinions welcome.

Using vermicompost in pots?
by Palmfarmer- 3 replies
was thinking about putting in Some vermicompost in my potted palms that are outdoors for the added micronutrients. I heard it should be avoided in pots since it drains poorly, but how about mixing in some perlite to fix that problem? was thinking a mix like this: 1 part coco coir or peat moss 1/2 part vermicompost 1/2 part regular compost 1/2 part perlite bloodmeal bonemeal Organic mineral fertilizer high in pottasium sounds good? Overkill?

For 10 years unsuccessful germination of coconut
by Ilovepalm- 1 follower

For 10 years I have been unsuccessfully trying to sprout a coconut palm from a nut. Every time the nuts turn moldy. I have already tried all possible sprouting methods available on the Internet, as well as from this forum. I even rinsed these nuts with washing powder before putting them in zip bags. I always soaked in warm water, then they had 100% humidity and 30 Celsius temperature. But they always mold and do not sprout. Now, I bought 4 coconuts and silence for three weeks.

Orchid bark mulch

Hi, I have an indoor majesty palm I repotted a few days ago. (picture) I have a spare orchid bark potting medium - is it a good idea or not to use it as mulch? The pros I thought for it were moisture retention (Israel, 35-40 degrees on many summer days), and the potting mix has 25% perlite so I thought some type of cover might help drafts from blowing them away. Any cons or problems? Thanks

Premature flowering dypsis

This plant (dypsis lutescens)seems healthy but way too young to be flowering. I have heard that when a palm flowers at a young age it is stressed, am I going to have to move it outside or will it grow fine?.

Though not a true palm, I thought I would share my mom's quite impressive Beaucarnea recurvata. She grows it indoors (used to move it out for the warmer months when it was smaller) in southeastern North Carolina. It is now up to about 7 feet!

All of the Licuala I’ve grown or acquired, can thrive in a pot, for what seems forever. These two in particular have been in the same pot for at least three years now and look great. L. ramsayii is another one that that had a long life in a container and always looked fantastic. Root bound….no problem. First one is L. grandis. The second two are L. lauderbachii. Tim

So I am germinating some S. Mexicana, and I don't know why but I pulled the seed out to see how much the root grew, (I have multiple others, I just wanted to see) and the very tippy top of the root snapped. Can It grow back? I really hope so. I have never had a root snap.

Rocks/weight

It's been reeeeeeally windy here so far this year - a few of my Outdoor Squad are heavy enough that it doesn't matter, but my Majesty, Baby Queen, and D. Lutescens keep falling over. I've already planned to repot them all 2 sizes larger, but can I add some gravel or rocks or broken concrete or something to add weight to keep them from blowing over? My a. Tuckerii seedlings have been inside since the last freeze anyway since the wind is almost uprooting them. The other 3 I mentioned are top heavy and lightweight while Dirty Sanchez, Sancho Jr, the queen, and my Butia x Lyto are all heavy already. We keep getting sustained 15-20mph with 40mph gusts and I'm tire…

Palmgain and seedlings?
by NCFM- 7 replies
I have a few dozen seedlings (various sabal species and a few phoenix canariensis) in pots that are roughly 5in wide by 12in deep. They are all around one year old and most have 2-3 leaves at this point. I just sprinkled some palmgain granular fertilizer in each pot (no more than a teaspoon per each seedling) but now after doing some reading on the forum I'm worried this may burn my palms. I'm hoping since I used such a small amount it won't cause any issues, but I wanted to consult those with more experience first.

Hello, complete beginner here so I apologize if this questions sound stupid. I have licuala grandis I purchased last july, and the store I bought said you need to replant in next April or so I have questions about that. Living in Ankara, Turley. 1 - I have some browning/yellowing on the tips only, can I do something about that? What is the probable reasons for that? 2 - My current pot is 25 cm in diameter, so I was thinking getting 35cm in diamater? 3 - Any special kind of soil mixture I need to use for this palm? 4 - Should I use any fertiziler after repotting? 5 - Any advice in general how to take care of better? Thank you k…
