Need help with new indoor Areca vestiaria
by Cyrtostachys- 1 follower

Hi all, About a week ago I received two small Areca vestiaria palms. They were shipped bare root with some sphagnum moss wrapped around the roots. They seemed fairly healthy and according to the seller they had been grown in the shade. I immediately potted the two palms together in a soil mixture consisting of orchid bark, cactus soil, medium sized perlite, and the sphagnum moss that the palms came with (although I did gently untangle most of it from the roots, choosing to instead disperse it through the potting media). I've slowly transitioned the palm to bright indirect light. The indoor temps don't get below about 73 degrees and the humidity ranges from abou…

Coffee Grounds?
by rttunc- 1 follower

I was wondering if anyone uses coffee grounds in their palms? I've seen mixed reports but I know that too much can cause high acidity. I don't have the ability to compost, so I try to use biodegradable things as natural ancillary fertilizer when I can (ie. egg shells for calcium). Thoughts?

Insane palm prices in the north
by DreaminAboutPalms- 9 replies

West Minneapolis suburbs. $130 for potted majesties. Absolute insanity for a palm that won’t survive a winter inside or outside here. In Texas these cost $30-$40. Might have to drive down and bring some up to sell here for cheaper

Palm frond is bent

Good morning fellow palm growers! Since this is my first post, I thought I’d briefly introduce myself. I’m originally from Canada (born and raised), and permanently moved to LA in 2018. I’ve always loved palm trees due to how elegant they are, and how awesome they look. Not to mention seeing the growth of all that time and effort right before your eyes lol. I’ve spent a solid 2-4 years learning and researching tons of information about the various palm species, soil requirements, what to look for in nutrient deficiencies, etc. I finally decided to pick up my first Mexican fan palm April 21st, 2022. The grower I got it from had germinated it in this clay-sand like mixture.…

I got a potted Phoenix Roebelenii I want to keep outdoors (south facing, no shade) between April to October, but temperatures in my area are low during the spring/summer/autumn period (15 to 22 C / 59 to 75 F to mostly). Do they require substantial heat (+25 C / +77 F) to grow or will they also grow in mild conditions?

I was thinking of putting a small Butia Odorata in there (25L / 6.6G), palm is a few years old and already has many pinnate fronds). Do they work on palms? During the winter it will be put in a greenhouse, rest of the year just outside. I hear the crop and tree growers swear by them, but on this forum I couldn't find much info besides hearing that the fabric airpruning pots are terrible due to the roots attaching themselves to the fabric, but what about these weird plastic ones?

Sabal minor, underground trunk.

I never really understood how a palm could grow an underground trunk, until I re potted a bunch of seedlings. Now I can see how it does it. The roots are not underneath on the bottom of the trunk. A couple were doubles too, I don't know how common that is. Probably quite common since I got two. The double trunked. Probably posted in the wrong section, but they were in pots. :-)

I have tortured this seed for years now. 1 2

I grew this Lyto Weddell with a couple of others from Sydney grown seed, a few years ago. The others died after one or two leaves emerged, of rot. They were too wet, the potting mix was cheap and did not drain well enough. So, over a year ago I repotted this one into a very fast draining premium potting mix. (No, not fine bark 2, seramis 1) and it has not changed. So apart from insufficient drainage, what else would cause this? I have looked really hard for insect type pests, and have not found any. And the roots look good too. I was just going to give it away when it looked good, we have three other big ones in the ground doing well, …

Do my pots drain too well?
by JohnAndSancho- 2 replies

Piggybacking off of a thread from the main forum. Can soil drain _too_ well? I expect it from the soil-free medium my L. Weddelaniums are in (US version of the @Pal Meir mix) - but the majority of my palms are in a ballpark 50/40/10 mix of cheap garden soil/Repti Bark/LECA now. My outdoor palms are cool as the other side of the pillow, growing and vibing hard. I do worry about my Kentias though since I've killed so many - I've literally misted them and watched water come through to the saucer. As a counterpoint, I just had to move my spindle palm to the patio due to fungus gnats - I threw some Mosquito Dunks in the soil, threw it in the shower to wash the bac…

Indoor Pothos Transplant

Hello Palm Potters… This isn’t a Palm specific question but you all know your stuff so I’m throwing it out… I mistakenly planted a Pothos cutting indoors but in outdoor potting soil that contains compost. It’s doing great but I’m getting gnats like crazy - since it’s still rooting (planted 2 months ago) how can I transplant this into a pot with indoor potting soil that won’t attract the bugs? I need to repot this with as little of the existing soil as possible. thank you and happy Memorial Day!

Scored a rare palm today in St.Pete. 1 gallon hydriastele beguinii OBI Island. Going to transplant into larger pot. I have two bags of fox farm soil. Should I plant the palm in Happy frog or ocean forest blend soil? Will be in heavy shade under 30 year old oak tree. Will move into garage when we get 35 degrees in January.

Which seems about a week or so later. Palms are growing in popularity like mad here now. 5 years ago all you could get were majesty’s at big box stores. Now many nursery’s and small business import them. this year I wanted to support palmsandplants.ca so I ordered this perfect condition cocos nucifera. 7g I should have just ordered the 15 and had the big centre piece but I know with our hot summers it should grow decent.

Growing a Tree Fern here in our Desert
by greenthumb7- 1 follower

Does anybody here in our desert climate of Arizona know if there are any type of Tree Fern(s) that could be grown here? (We are known as a tropical desert garden) with being we have more going for us with humidity (as scant as it is) than most other deserts; and I'm wondering with protection from our harsh summer sun if anyone (albeit here in Arizona, or other deserts globally) has experimented with trying to do so; and succeeded with success; or not??? Thanks so much; and Happy Hump Day to all, and Happy Gardening.

New purchase today

I went to my local Lowes today. I was astonished that I was able to purchase a group of large Phoenix Robellinii. The trunks are well-established and the fronds look in good health. I will keep them in isolation for 30 days in case of insect activity and / or diseases. I also purchased several bags of orchid potting mix for good drainage. Pictures posted below for your enjoyment. ;)

Help me spend my bonus

I feel like buying a couple/few more palms. After a talk with Phil, I think I should relegate my C. Benezeii to Office Squad after repotting. It's trunking and perpetually flowering, but it's basically a turnstile into my apartment and any other spot on my patio will cook it. I'd like to replace it with something shade loving that'll go more vertical and less horizontal. Also looking for anything that will grow in super low light, and please don't say Kentia because I've killed tons of them. I'm guessing some kind of chamaedorea, and my YouTube channel shows what I've already got growing. Looking to add something that will grow outdoors in mostly shade, …

Kicking them out!

If you grow containerized palms in frosty areas, do you season them outside and when do they leave the comfort of their shelter? I do this in approximately three waves. Today, I kicked out the Cy, cas revolutas (Sago palms), Butia (Pindo) palms, Chamaerops, Phoenix canariensis, Washingtonia robusta, Sabal bermudana, and one of the four Queen palms (Syagrus). These are some of my very biggest and heaviest so it was a major chore

Here’s my yearly photo of the palms by the pool. As you can see the trees are budding not green yet but the weather has been fantastic. 28c here today. The palms have bee. Outside acclimating for two weeks already. We swam last night so we are officially 2 weeks earlier than anything previous. Love it! So glad to have the palms outside. I do keep some of the smaller ones in the palm room full time (for now) but thought I’d share left to right wodyetia bifurcata 15g Hyophorbe lagenicaulus 7g and bismarkia nobilis 7g

Maybe they aren't even visitors, perhaps they live there! So I found this little gray tree frog hanging out in one of our sagos (Yes it's not a palm) I thought he was cool and snapped a pic. So if you have cool visitors to your pots lizards, birds, spiders etc. Let's see em!
