Hey everyone, I have a windmill palm tree in a planter pot on my balcony. This spring I trimmed the branches since they seemed to be browning and had some black spots. There were also some branches which had grown but not opened yet. Its now been a couple months and the sprouted branches haven't opened up, and they've turned really brown. I've been watering it properly but it doesn't seem to be helping. Any ideas? It was originally potted about 3 years ago and I can't fit it in a bigger pot, I was hoping to keep it in the same one. If I re-pot it in the same pot with fresh soil, would that help? Thanks! John

Another watering question

Since SE TX just straight up skipped spring and went right into summer temps, I'm obviously gonna be watering more - a lot more. Will there be any harm from adding diluted fish fertilizer to each watering? Should I buy some liquid seaweed or kelp too? I've got a few repots and added some slow release (Carl Pool) to the soil to a couple of them. Is this a bad idea? Also have some Jobes palm food (4-4-4) My goals are healthy, heavy dark green palms that will make me hate myself in winter. I'd also like to see my 7g queen clear the roof, and possibly get a nasty note from the apartment manager. Also revive Dirty Sanchez to his former glory.

Haven't found much info on this. I'm about to pull the trigger on 3 of these for Patio Squad https://www.homedepot.com/p/Bloem-Veranda-Square-18-in-Black-Plastic-Deck-Box-Planter-57918/301861604 My palms are in a mix of upcycled grower pots, some grower pots, and Bloem Lucca. The Bloem are my favorite due to the removable saucers and the lips that make them easy to move. Plus they look nice. I did a search here for Bloem and literally every post was mine lol. Anyway - what do y'all like? What's y'alls favorite?

Watering Palms

I'm just curious to know is it ok to water palms on the leaves, Like using a shower setting on the hoes and spraying the plants and soil because when I water my palms I always try and be super careful and only wet the soil and it takes sooooooo long to water each and every palm because I can't just water them altogether at the same time. If theirs a better solution to watering I'm all ears

Fertilizer Recs?

Any fertilizer suggestions for a semi-novice that tends to struggle with appropriate measurements?!? I worry about not using enough but then also overdoing it! Are the spikes any good? I just moved to south Florida and have really taken advantage of it with my palm collection, but am limited to having them in pots for the foreseeable future. Any (affordable and easy to find) recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

Dessicated leaves
by Mag- 5 replies

Help! I got my very first palm - Livistona Rotundofilia a month ago and she seemed to be doing fine until... well, I repotted her a few days ago and upon a closer look noticed that some leaves look dessicated. Also, she has a new leaf but it is growing veeery slowly. She was standing in a south facing room but in a rather darkish corner. I have moved her to a brighter spot. What else can I do? I guess she might not have had enough nutrients, the soil was very hard but I did water and misted her regularly. I love her and it kills me to think she is unhappy.

Learning! Potted King Palm help!
by Allison W- 8 replies

New to California and to Palms. Really trying to figure out the watering demands of potted palms. I had hard time finding info on King Palm potted indoors. I have great mixed indirect and direct light. The King was doing well for about 3 weeks until last week. One of the tri stems (?) st bases started hanging down/droopy, a few leads flat out dried up brown, some larger tips are fraying and browning. Tried extra water keeping meter in more upper moist (previously keeping low moist since thought maybe was overwatering before). Seems to maybe improved some with actually more watering keeping mid upper moist zone in moisture meter about 6” down) but I truly don’t know ho…

I'd like to see more of what people are doing in tiny spaces. I don't care if you're growing palms or vegetables or flowers or whatever. I can't be the only one on Palmtalk in an apartment, living off of grow lights and limited space. I've been all over YouTube and seen what can be done. Shameless plug, YouTube.com/dbljzzl

Life after spear pull?
by PsyPalm- 10 replies

Hey all Looking for some advice on whether or not I can save this howea forsteriana. It's most recent spear was emerging as usual over the the winter/spring then about a 6 weeks ago it very quickly dried out and died. (The other kentia it's sharing a pot with is still growing normally so I'm not sure what happened :/ ) Last week I gave the desiccated spear a tug and it popped right out. I know this is pretty much a death sentence but strangely the single remaining frond is still very healthy looking and feeling. The petiole on the remaining frond is firm, dark green, and none of the pinnae are showing any signs of decline usually associated with a dying frond. …

Stains on the leafs of the coconut palm
by Ilovepalm- 1 follower

Hi. In May, I bought a nice healthy coconut palm. I look after her in such a way, that she is in a palm pot with an adapted substrate mixture. At the bottom of the pot there is expanded clay and burned holes. I have a temperature of 27-30 Celsius in my room. Every day coconut is sprinkled with warm water or a humidifier is used. I water about once a week either on the saucer or alternately from the top. Twice a week I put him in a steamy bathroom for a few hours. Despite this, ugly spots appeared on the leaves of the palm tree. I don't know if it's a mushroom? I must admit, that I recently had a massive spider mite attack. Now, it is calm for now. I live in Poland, so the…

What size pot to buy for Areca palm
by ERock82- 1 reply
- 1.3k views
I recently bought an Areca palm that is in a 7 gallon pot from Home Depot (about 14 inches diameter by a foot tall- common size for a $40 plant). I am going to have this outside under a tree so I only want this to grow to about 8 feet. It is currently about 4 to 5 feet tall. What size pot should I buy? At Home Depot the sizes are in inches in diameter rather than gallons. Many range from 15 to 20 inches that I saw on the shelf. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

washingtonia What’s going on with my Washingtonia?
by DreaminAboutPalms- 9 replies

This Washingtonia hybrid seedling is about 9.5 months old and I noticed about a month ago how the trunk was starting to curve. This morning I was removing the oldest frond noticed that the boot ripped right off revealing what looks to be like the trunk rotting on bottom of one side, it’s all black. not sure if this is from bugs, or if that spot just kept getting wet. Other than this the palm looks fine. Newest frond is steadily growing

Thriving potted palms dead within a week

I don’t have any pictures to post of this. I’m fairly experienced with potted palms, however I keep having this string of unfortunate every couple of so years. Most recent was a foxtail Palm about 5 feet tall (frond/petiole wise but only a half foot of actual trunk). It was doing great all winter and spring. I set it outside on the patio, granted it was hot but well watered. I have a bbq one of the days, but I ensured the heat was more than 6 feet away. No other plants were burned. I assumed it was leaf burn from too much sun exposure. But within a week, all 4 fronds turned brown. Today, the spear also pulled. Once again, a dead palm. Had to been at least 5…

Pot Bound Date Palm- What Do I Do?!
by Lynsey- 4 replies

Hi all, I have a seriously pot bound date palm. I have a bigger pot to repot it into but I would have to cut off a lot of the roots. Everything I read seems to say don't cut the roots but I don't think I have a choice. The palm seems to be healthy but the roots just keep on growing! What should I do? Would cutting the roots off be a death sentence for my palm?! Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Little 2 leaf seedling no big deal….Just wanted to move the pot over in the bed it was sitting on and definite resistance…slowly pulled the pot straight up, somehow didn’t break the root, and out comes this monster!!Then took it out of the pot and it did a complete 360 around the bottom of the pot before it found its way outUnreal, true desert palm, drilling deep for water, easily add another 6” of depth if it didn’t circle the pot first. Has to be a factor in their overall hardiness as wellInto a deep pot ya go

Almost 10 years ago, in 2006, I received some Lytocaryum weddellianum seeds in my mailbox. I just had to grow this species because when I was a kid I once had a small seedling and had grown attached to it for the short time it lived. As an 8-year old I simply overwatered it by adding a bit of water every 5 minutes or so. About 15 years later I went searching for this little plant, but it was nowhere to be found. As it turned out the species used to be sold by the 100's in the late '80 s in many gardencentres in the Netherlands, but now it seems to have just disappeared. After searching many gardencentres throughout the country, I decided to try to find some seeds as a las…

Palm Hydroponics

Some thirty years ago I had grown palms also in hydroculture. I regret now that I didn’t take more photos. I found only this one below, taken in 1986, showing seedlings of Chamaedorea elegans, Ch. metallica, Ch. seifrizii, and Caryota mitis. I remember that among my Syagrus romanzoffiana palms the only one in hydroponics grew twice as fast as the others in soil mix. I think that also Cocos nucifera will be an ideal indoor palm for hydroculture. — Please post your experiences and add many nice pics! Seven palms, grown up from seeds in hydroculture: Ch. elegans, Ch. metallica, Ch. sefrizii, Ch. metallica; Caryota mitis, Ch. seifrizii, Ch. metallica (December 1986)…

Indoor mini greenhouse questions

Hi All, Had a bit of a cold snap in Brisbane. Have some tropicals I do not want to loose. Mapu's in particular. Outside Day max temperatures about 22C and Night temperatures of 5C. Inside house gets down to 15C min. I wasn't sure how to keep palms warm. So I bought a mini greenhouse and put aquarium on bottom level with heater/thermostat set to 28C. With the shadehouse closed its sitting stable at 21C with 75% humidity. My issue is ventilation... I read you need ventilation. My thoughts are if I vent it with indoor air.. it will cool down. So how can you heat and vent at same time? Any ideas or other ways to keep palms warm over winter w…

Nobody at work cares about palms! lol. Luckily we have this forum. Anyway, Just felt like sharing a few photos of my back ups and futures. This photo is About 10 months old and is just shortly after a Floribunda order had arrived. This is last Monday, not all the same guys are there now but some pretty nice growth going on. A lot of stuff spilled out to new shade house (wife calls it a patio) Some of the seedlings not too long out of the incubator. Sometimes there is beauty even in death. Spent Verschaffeltia splendida leaf laying on top of a fairly happy young Neoveitchia storkii leaf. Anyway was kind of bored and thinking ab…

Hey guys! I'm toying with the idea of splitting up my cluster of four kentias into four individual pots. During this process my idea is to convert them from soil to a semi-hydro setup using Leca. I was inspired by the following thread concerning palms in Leca, specifically the impressive success story by user wimmie of two very large howeas growing semi hydro in pure Leca. My questions/concerns about the process are the following: -I've heard a lot about how sensitive kentias roots are and I'd want to go about separating my cluster in the best possible way, so any advice on how to do that without shocking/killing the plants would be much appreciated. …
