Jubaea Chilensis -query

Spring finally appears to have arrived here in SE UK, after a very wet, very grey and very long winter.... Luckily, we didn't experience much in the way of severe cold, with nothing more than a a few frosty mornings. Every palm bar one suffered from spear pull after (a very cold) winter 2022/2023, I'm not expecting too many issues this year. But time will tell... My small Jubaea suffered from spear pull early last year and as a result only put out one crimpled frond by the end of the summer. It has already stared to put out new fronds this year, however, it now appears to be growing at any angle. Does anyone know if it will straighten up in time, or is th…

Ummph, then poof...nothing
by old Mike- 13 replies

I got these two plam trees in Statesboro Georgia on the "I'm just a out dead rack". I transplanted them into 15 gallon grow bags inside a pot. I fertilized them and they started to put new growth out. About 45 days or so. They get watered once a day for 5 minutes, & have good drainage. Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I think they are a fan palm, maybe a Washington palm. TIA Old Mike

I noticed my palms having brown scale like bugs? On is, also seeing white around them. I sprayed with a mixture of neem pil and dish soap but appears to have done nothing. Any other recommendations? I started noticing about 3 weeks ago. So I think it’s still early.

I have this tiny Jubaea Chilensis seedling. How soon should I repot it in a more fertile potting mix or supply fertilizer in the existing pot? It’s in a solo cup right now with not super fertile soil. Just basic starter soil mix with perlite and peat and topsoil.

Kansas palms in pots
by Presstopolis- 3 replies

My father passed away 7 years ago and I took over his palm trees because they meant so much to him. I am working to keep them going but my expertise isn’t there. I wanted to send a couple photos to show you the state of them and see if you had any advice or things I could do to keep them alive. I already have lost a few Mexican fan palms when their leaves turned brown almost over night. Don’t want the same thing to happen to any of these. Thanks and appreciate and advice you could provide.

Christmas Palm Growth Rate
by WalkerLovesTheTropics- 9 replies

Hey everyone, I am new to the forum. I am sorry if this has already been discussed but I was wondering how fast my christmas palms will grow. I just received them in the mail today, the first is about 18" and the second one is about 13". I live in New York, so the growing season is fairly short. I think the growing season for theses palms in New York would be about 4 months. Then I would bring them inside. I have a spot where they can get full southern sun in the summer, and then I have grow lights for the winter. I was just wondering about how much I should expect them to grow in the 4 months that I can keep them outside, if they are in Temps of a…

I need advice. All of my other washingtonia robustas seem to be growing just fine, but this one has not grown since transplanting 2 weeks ago. It has formed a dry tip on the top, so i increased the watering, but it made no difference. All my other robustas are triple the size and look healthy (although they still lack some sunlight in the south-facing window) Thanks in advance

The squirrels have been wreaking havoc on my potted palms this spring. I'm not sure why they're so attracted to them, but they love digging holes in the pots and tearing up my palms' roots. Has anyone else experienced this, and if so, did you come up with a good way to deter them? So far I've tried trapping them or popping them with airsoft guns when I catch them in the act. All to no avail, though.

Expletives Screamed

While I'm sitting here feeling like a bad palm (and plant) dad for neglecting things, lots of new growth on things that shouldn't do this well as houseplants. Latania lontaroides Dypsis L something aka Red Neck Palm. Humble brag but I sprouted this from a seed, this was the only one that sprouted. Chamaedorea Plumosa. Ok full disclosure I have had this one for a few years, but I brought it inside to protect it from kittens, and up until a few weeks ago it wasn't getting nearly enough light or water. It's recovered. Spindle palm, tbh these are known for doing well as houseplants so I'm a filthy liar, but this ne…

Small species suitable for indoor growing?
by anotherworldterraria- 1 follower

I'm hoping to compile a list of the smallest palm species, and specifically those of the smallest which would be suitable for growing indoors under these conditions: I have a "plant room" where all my other plants are (Bromeliads, Tillandsia, and a variety of other plants). I've got tons of lights (full spectrum very bright LED panels and bars - they are sufficient for growing Tillandsia so you know they're good) but the palms would be off to the side catching the excess rays, so probably species which grow in shade or moderate light would be good. Temps range from about 64F to 77F Humidity fluctuates between 45-60% By smallest species, I really m…

Spring troubles

I put out my palms / plants out for the spring a couple of weeks ago. Some experienced a couple nights in the mid to upper 30s (not the cardboard). A lot of them are looking pretty ragged and some fronds are browning and closing. Would this be considered over watering, sunburn, or temperature shock? I have done the same exact thing every year but they look the worst this time. Most notably the Serena repens (center), trachycarpys princeps (far left), foxtail fern, and Zamia furfuracea.

Mexican fan palm tilt / spiral
by Slifer00- 5 replies
How do I fix this tilt? It was initially tilting/leaning to the right, despite being in the centre of a south-facing window. I then moved it a bit in that direction, hoping that the tilt would reduce/go back to its original position. But now, it has formed a spiral on the upper half that is tilting back to the left? Does anyone have any idea as to how i could fix this? Thanks in advance

Dilemma with a Bismarkia
by gdumea- 6 replies
So, here's my problem. My Bismarkia is beautiful and in phenomenal shape, but it's getting too big for the pot, the next step would be a massive whiskey barrel or something equivalent. What would you all recommend me do? I'm a desert zone 8a here in NM. It's going to get too big for me to store in my shop or in my house eventually. Do I winterize it and keep it outside, if so, how? Or do I plant it in the ground and winterize it? Any suggestions appreciated.

mexican fan palm Mexican Fan Palm Potted
by LOCO COCONUT- 1 reply

I collected some Mexican Fan Palm seeds in Phoenix Arizona last year. I was not expecting much but I put them in some soil and waited for anything. They sprouted sure enough and here is my biggest one. I have been growing this palm since January of this year. It is now almost a year old and the leaves are starting to become jagged.
