Saturday, Fiery Saturday

Howdyall: I wasn't online yesterday, because it was SO hot, too hot to set up my new 'puter. Nothing to do but sit and drink poison under the manana tree. According to the reports, it was 119 F (50C?) in Woodland Hills, 116 F in Burbank, and somewhere around 110 F at my dive. It was 108 F in San Clemente, which is right on the ocean. HOT HOT HOT! As that great sage, Buster Poindexter would have said. So, anyone have data for your dives? The PALMS are loving it! Tell us! dave

Sago cone and seeds
by Goldorak- 4 replies

Hi, My male sago palm has grown a cone in the middle for about a month now. Will the plant get rid of the cone itself in a little while or should I remove the cone myself? My female sago palm is growing seeds. After removing the seeds, should I cut away the stuff around that held the seeds of leave it as is? Thanks.

Urechites lutea ? for RLR
by SunnyFl- 14 replies
- 3.9k views
I have a question about the native FL vine Urechites lutea (a/k/a Pentalinon luteum per FL Vascular Plants site). There's a labeled one growing by a boardwalk at Selby. To me, it looks identical to the vine that the big box stores are selling as "yellow mandevilla." Is this "yellow mandevlla" vine the same as the Urechites/Pentalinon?

Cordyline Collection

It's hard for me to pass by a Ti plant that I don't already have in the collection, whether it's at a nursery or in a garden I see passing by. People here on the Big Island are always happy to give you a cutting from their garden if you ask. Bring it home and stick it in the ground and you have a new Ti. There must be hundreds of different kinds in almost every color imaginable. Here are some pics of my favs.

How to trim giant bird of paradise?
by BigWaveDave- 1 reply
- 3.2k views
I'm looking to get the really nice clean looking trunks but only have a slight idea on how to do that. The old leaf bases don't really want to just pull right off, so I'm thinking that I will need to use a knife. Alot of the old leaf bases are old and brown, while the newest ones are green. Should I only trim off the old and brown ones? Any help is appreciated. Thanks David

Castanospermum australe - Morten Bay Chestnut

I have this tree in a 15 gal for about 9 or 10 years now and it is flowering for the first time. I can't wait to see the seed pods. It is about 16 ft. I'm very leery abount planting it because it might get too big for my backyard(saving space for more palms). Will this tree grow very big here in SoCal? I noticed the ones at the SD Wild Animal Park are very small (8-16 ft) with very nice seed pods and they have been there for a long time. However, on Davesgarden, I saw a picture of a monsterous one in Pasdena(40 ft).

Sabal parviflora

Hi All, I was never impressed or interested with any sabal until I went to the Palomar College Arboretum over the weekend, and one palm mesmerized me, sabal parviflora. This palm is huge with massive fronds up to 15 feet and a trunk 3 feet wide. Wow! The speciman was about 35ft tall with 18-20 ft of trunk. I wonder why SoCal never planted any of this palm in the park or zoo. I took some pictures and will post them tonight. Pictures does not do it any justice. WOW! http://waynesword.palomar.edu/arbimg1.htm http://www.palomar.edu/arboretum/picgal.html The picture of the palm on this website was probably about 10 years ago.

I thought it seemed appropriate for the first thread to be a first of another kind, so here is my first Bromeliad. At last I have one, hopefully the first of many. Just to add to the fun, I thought I'd let you all have a go at ID'ing it.

Hi all I have a Ficus benghalensis that was given as a gift, should I plant this monster? If I do how long will it take before it gets really huge? How long will it take before its the size of a large Delonix regia for example? I have an area of about 500m2 at bottom of my garden along a river, the banyan might help to control flooding too. Let me know what you all think Dennis

Aech. blanchetiana enigma

I'm aware of the orange-yellow form and the less common red forms as seen plus a narrower leaf form from Rancho Soledad. Another plant called Aechmea 'Vermelho' looks like a thin-leafed form but with leaves that can reach 6'. Any comments?

Groundcover plant ideas
by Walter John- 9 replies

I've had a go at a couple of different groundcover plant ideas and here's just one of them. It's Ivy Geranium and I have it growing as you can see under what I call my Latania garden. This area includes crotons, cordylines and a few other palms. I have also tried in a small area, some mondo grass, what other ground covers are you kind folks trying or would like to try ?

Hi, I'm planting 3 'islands' in my yard, with the oldhamii in two of them. I wanted to make a tight cluster of plants in each - alowing room for growth of course. With the clumping habits of oldhamii, can or will it overtake the other plants? How close can other plants, palms etc. be safely planted? Thanks for any input, Scott Oh yeah, I went and got that giant bird of paradise.

How long will a Sego flower?
by MattyB- 1 reply
- 1.7k views
Hi guys, My mom has a Cycas revoluta that has been flowering for 2 years now. We thought we'd get a new flush of leaves last year and nothing. Just some more messy flowers and seeds that the rats like to eat. Then finally this summer we thought that it would put out some more leaves and now it has another huge female flower forming. How long can this go on? She fertilizes and waters it. It's in a nice draining cactus mix that it seems to like for many years now. There's another one that didn't put out any leaves last year, it just continued to flower, but this year it flushed. So anyway, can someone enlighten me please? Thank you.
