Ranunculus
by mari- 2 replies
- 1.1k views
Is anyone growing ranunculus? They are a popular winter flower in California. They have a cold hardiness of 10F but they don't like heat. I picked up some plants in Irvine, CA at a Lowes. I plan to just grow them in pots because I think they do not like wet feet. One of my questions what is their true heat and cold tolerance? http://www.willowcreekgardens.com/index.a....gory=37 http://plants.usda.gov/java....t=print

Hi, I saw this at a nearby botanical garden over the weekend and no one working at the time knew what kind it was. I know very little about these, but I thought it was pretty cool and would like to find one. If some one could id it for me maybe I could find one somewhere for sale. Thanks in advance. Mike

Citrus
by Randyp- 19 replies

I'm not sure if this would be considered tropical looking but was wondering how much abuse citrus can take before calling it quits. Maybe some of you have citrus in the same condition. Bought several last spring. Some Orange, Lemon, Lime and tangerine still in their containers. Looked fine until fall when they were all hammered by leafminer and most almost completely defoliated . Started to come back with a lot of good growth and then were fried during the freeze earlier this year. I cut back obviously dead branches, watered and fertilized and coaxed some good new growth only to have the new leaves burnt to a crisp during the last several nights of frost. pretty much j…

Can anyone ID this fabulous small tree I spotted today outside a restaurant in Clearwater, FL? I took a couple of photos with my cellphone, and also plucked a leaf off and scanned an image of it at home. The leaf is not as dark as it appears in the scan.

I noticed that The Tropical Look -- An Encyclopedia of Dramatic Landscape Plants is no longer being printed by Timber Press. It was in their catalog for 10 years which is an excellent run. If you were planning on getting this book for your library, better hurry. Diane

These are linked pics from another site I frequent. The blooming of these Xanthorrhoeas is apparently triggered from the previous year's bush fire that passed through. -Ron-

Mystery Ficus
by Peter- 7 replies
Looking for id help from anyone. This Ficus is growing at a friend's place in Hollywood Florida. It was purchased from a specialist nursery, who described it as coming from volunteer seedlings germinating inside Staghorn ferns imported from Java. I've googled a bit for Indonesian Ficus species but haven't come across anything matching this one. The fruit is small, red, bland. The leaves are huge, approx. 18"x24". Anyone have any ideas?

Cordyline terminalis
by John Case- 9 replies
Recently my wife picked up a couple of Ti plants. They are doing very poorly in the house, as it is far too dry inside for them. I just took them outside as they are dropping leaves and need some humidity (luckily it wil be raining off and on for the next few days). Is it worth the try to put them in the landscape (under some sort of canopy, of course) to see if they survive? It would be nice to have them for the color, but it seems unlikely around here with 25 degree winters and 115 degree summers.....

Vriesia imperialis
by bgl- 18 replies
- 2.3k views
People often complain about the fact that the media (newspapers and TV) only concentrate on bad news, and we never hear good news. Well, our local newspaper, Hawaii Tribune-Herald, pathetic as it may be when it comes to covering world news, is very good when it comes to covering local news - good OR bad. Today, on the front page is a photo that takes up almost half the page of Professor of Biology at UHH (University of Hawaii - Hilo) Don Hemmes, next to a flowering Vriesia imperialis. Don Hemmes also happens to be the new President of HIPS (Hawaii Island Palm Society), as of Feb. 2nd, 2007, to be exact. And there are also quite a few palms visible in the photo! Hawaii Tr…
