Which big spikey trunked tree is this?
by Alan_Tampa- 6 replies
- 1.1k views
I have been growing this tree for the past 10(?) years. I collected some volunteers from under a biggun at Sarasota Jungle Gardens (with permission), I kept two and planted them in my Tampa yard about 7 years ago. It is a Kapok of one kind or another, now at last a flower can help me to get a proper and specific ID. So Eric at Leu Garden's or others with good flowering tree knowledge, What the heck have I been growing all this time? It is about 60ft tall or so. ( I have two but one was killed to the ground in a freeze while the other suffered minor damage as it was closer to some canopy. (The carambola in the picture is holding the flower up to get a snapshot.) …

This is my first batch of bananas. The ones at the very top are ripe. I believe they are ready to cut off the plant? Also---- Does anyone know what type of bananas these might be? I believe the plant is a Dwarf Cavendish, but cant remember for sure. The plant itself is not super tall (maybe 8 ft OA) and the fruit is hanging at about 5 ft.

Dahlia
by Bilbo- 8 replies
I have always called it Dahlia (with a soft "h") as was the botanist Dr Anders Dahl of Sweden. Here in UK everyone else seems to call it Day-lee-ah. Am I alone? For the record I dont like most of these (esp.hybrids galore packed into the same bed) but I have just taken delivery of two tasty looking D.imperialis which grows to at least 13` as most of you know and that is very different indeed! Thanks Regardez Juan

Anyone know the scientific name for Python Vine?
by kylecawazafla- 6 replies
- 1.6k views
These vines in Africa can get incredible thick and look almost like a strangling form of a baobab tree. I haven't found any good photos of them online, but was wondering if anyone has heard of this plant or knew the scientific name? And better yet, if any of them are in cultivation? Here is an okay photo of one, although they can look much more disproportionate. http://travel.webshots.com/photo/1033193453025498982oJJQXv

what is up with my bananas?
by doubravsky- 4 replies
I have 4-5 species of Musa that were all totally defoliated by the January freeze. 3 of them have started to regrow leaves, but with all three, as the new leaf was just about big enough to unfurl, it just sort of "fell over" and went limp. I noticed that when I tug on it, it breaks off. Is this residual cold damage? Will future leaves be ok? Anyone seen this before?

I am certain Id have no shot at this one up here in Tarpon Springs, but these are beautiful trees. It seems a sure "sign" of the tropics to me when I see pics of large ones. As such, I am just curious as to where they might make it in FL? At what temperature will these trees croak?

Best lawn product I've used
by Matt in SD- 11 replies
I was recommended this product called "Lawn Restore" from a salesperson at a local nursery. It is an OMRI listed organic fertilizer that is pelletized for slow release. I've tried many organic fertilizers on my lawn and they really didn't work too well so I was skeptical. But it was relatively cheap so I gave it a shot. I also was never too impressed with the longer term results from the synthetic fertilizers. I spread the Lawn Restore about 6 weeks ago now and I can positively say it is the best lawn product I've seen. My lawn was starting to look pretty pathetic and it was only about 9 months old from sod. It was very thin and the growth was very spotty. Now it…

I'm copying this article in its entirety as the LA Times requires registration. from: http://www.latimes.com/feature....1.story A Jurassic park of their own Ancient cycads attract a subculture of collectors devoted to the quirky plants, which can sell for tens of thousands. In Southern California, it's a high-stakes scene. By Jeff Spurrier LA Times March 22, 2007 BACK in the Jurassic period, long before the stegosaurus died out and last ice age had even begun, there was one great landmass called Pangea, and it was covered with an odd little tree called the cycad. The plant looked like your average palm but was anything but ordinary. Dinosaurs ate it, so it …

Lily pond
by fiji jim- 13 replies
- 1.1k views
All the info we find on this topic seems to be for milder climates. We would like to know how deep it should be? We will need to use a liner to hold water in the drier months; so how much soil should we add on top of the liner for the plants to root? Most temperate climate advice was to grow in submurged baskets and remove them in the colder times but this would be unnecessary here. Is it good to have a flow through the pond? Any help or advice on this topic would be appreciated.

seeking Yucca seedling advice
by polihale- 2 replies
Aloha, besides my extensive palm collection, I have some Yucca seedlings about a year old that are doing very well. I'm thinking of planting three in my yard. Any advice at all about any aspect of planting a seeding? I'm installing a dripper system near each plant, but... - watering schedule? - ideal soil composition? - fertilizer? Is 3-1-2 the right balance? - anything else? I'm going to plant Joshua Trees. Reminder, it's hot, dry, sunny, sometimes windy where I live. They'll sit in full sun (they're in full sun right now, getting showered several times a day). Thanks... Christopher

Can anyone tell me what species of tree this is and anything about it? The tree is in S.E. Florida, zone 10b area. Here's an overall view: http://outdoors.webshots.com/photo/2426974460042496162szKPis This photo shows some fruit clusters. I was sent these photos and didn't personally see the tree myself, hence I can't offer any more specifics. However, I figure anyone familiar with this species would know what this tree is by the leaves shape and fruits, etc. http://outdoors.webshots.com/photo/2629234140042496162jAGqzK
