My cousin proposed to his fiance on the top of Mount Kilimanjaro. Anyways, he sent us loads of photos from their trip north to Tanzania, and I thought some of you would find the plant photos a little interesting. There are not too many of them, the mainly sent photos of the icefields towards the summit, and the game at the base.

My winter trials
by metalfan- 0 replies
Well, we had the hard freeze of 22F the other night. The next day it was only 42F for the high, then another freeze to 26F, and again the yesterday only to about 50 for the high. Last night was about 38/39 and it was much warmer today, about 70. So, I was out in the yard trimming back mushy gingers, damaged brugmansias and etc and checked on the plants I al giving a winter hardiness trial to this year. So far these are my results: Golden crinum (Crinum xanthophyllum): this hard to obtain little gem was expensive when I bought it about 5 years ago. I let it get to a good sized stand in the greenhouse and divided off three nice sized pups and planted them out this…

Cycad I.D.
by Patrick- 12 replies
Hi everyone! This is a palm, er, cycad I rescued from the cold, desolate, foggy world of Richmond, Ca and moved it to the colder, but often more sunny world of my place! I'm sure the guy told me what it is, but I have no recollection. When I got it it was just the caudex (?- sorry if this is wrong- the BUD) and it threw out these 2 new leaves since I got it in the summer. I had to transplant it- it was in this pathetic little 1/2 gal. ceramic pot and hadn't been touched in a loooong time. Any thoughts?? It's done just fine with a few nights in the high twenties. Any info is VERY much appreciated so I can plan it's siting in my yard accordingly. THANKS!!

Tuberose blooming in December?
by Randy- 7 replies
I planted 6 tuberose bulbs in pots last spring and was hoping to enjoy the powerful fregrance by late summer. I waited. and waited. and waited. and waited. (you get the idea). So Phoenix metro area has been enjoying warmer than normal temps and I was ready to pull the bulbs for next season, then something caught my eye this morning - an inflo with a big fat bloom "package" pushing out above the foliage. Looking forward to seeing what happens from here but I'm surprised at the timing. Then again, I never had the tuberose plant before this year.

A friend bought two pachypodiums from me a couple of years ago. They are now flowering and show the different forms. One is single trunk and then branched, the other is multi trunked. Both beautiful, but the spines ..................... I think they will be great for a security perimeter.

red mangroves
by ChrisM- 6 replies
Ended up with a few small ones this week and didn't know if anybody out here has experience with them. I am primarily interested in their cold hardiness. Does anyone know how far up the coast they range or know their low tolerances. One place on the net mentioned Cedar Key as the northern cut off. Any northern Gulf Coasters aware of the mangrove status farther along the panhandle or Mobile, etc. Thanks Chris

Chamaeodorea Benzii Surprise
by ellidro- 4 replies
I was out doing my daily walk through the garden and noticed a little seedling at the base of my Chamaedorea Benzii. I have no idea what it is but the plant cam from jungle music so the sky is the limit. If you look close it's new leaf comes out orange. Rusty found a Stangeria seedling in the pot of one of his plants from Jungle Music so that might be a good guess. Any opinions? Thanks in advance. Nick

FUN Big Tree Register
by swamptreenelly- 8 replies

http://www.fremontica.com/roadside/FUN_tree_list.php My Friend Hugh is building this website. It's like the Big Tree Register in a sense. But you can add your Biggest trees in your community, even if they are not state champs, more like city champs. It is a good tool for recording your biggest species and understanding microclimates and good soil as indicators of good growth. People can learn how big a certain tree can get and how to scale them in a planting spot. We are going to get the Boy Scout involved in this project as they may be our future stewarts of the urban forest.

Poinsettia from Madagascar
by Jeff Searle- 13 replies
Last year's trip over in Madagascar, I found this strange looking Poinsettia growing at one of the small hotel's we stayed at. It was far from the bushy types that you see sold at any nursery or big box stores. This had a very open, sprawling habit of growth to it. Just a few leaves near the ends of the branches, and then a cluster of flowers. The leaves even seem like they had a different shape to them. I'm wondering if anyone else has ever seen this before. And I agree, it's not the prettiest grown plant and would probablly never sell at a store. But, here it is. Jeff

The Blue Grass Tree
by sur4z- 18 replies

I drive by this tree every day going to and from work. I've tried to identify it and in fact I've offered to buy it (unfortunately unsuccessfully). I've been told it is an Xanthorrhoea Glauca and actually had that determination confirmed by a company called Palm Plantations of Australia. Nonetheless I would be interested to know if it is unanimous on the name of the tree and whether it can be purchased in south Florida. It is my understanding that the grass tree is protected in Australia and may not be exported anymore. A couple little guys

Dombeya "Seminole Pink"
by Jeff Searle- 14 replies
- 7.7k views
Here's mine at the nursery. And as you can see, it's flowering heavy this time of the year. I love this plant in the landscape. But the reason why you don't see more of them is because their so hard to propagate. They can be rooted from cuttings, but I never get a high percent of them to take. Also, you can get them from airlayers. Anyone else have pictures of theirs? Jeff

Cycas revoluta
by eastern.nurseries- 10 replies

These are some Cycas revoluta I have grown from seed over the years. The variegation can be manipulated like in Rhapis but it is a much slower process. What do you think of them? Above is an example of a Shiroba type. It comes out snow white and slowly fills in the albino choroplasts with pigment to lime green. This is an extremely rare type. This centre one and the one below is a 'noshima' type

Flowering Vine

I bought this plant a couple of years ago, and man is it a fast grower. But I lost the tag with the name on it. It blooms most of the year, and gets a fairly large leaf. I'm going to start some cuttings next spring, so I really need some help with the name. Thanks, Jeff
