Euphorbia stenoclada
by Eric in Orlando- 8 replies

I was at the TPIE show in Ft. Lauderdale yesterday and saw a cool plant I never seen before, Euphorbia stenoclada. It is very spiny and silvery colored. It makes a small tree and is native to Madagascar. And then today I was driving on the expressway near downtown. It has recently been expanded and they had just landscaped the median with lots of xeric plants. I couldn't believe it, about a dozen of these are planed in there. Anyone else familiar or growing this?

What do I have here?
by _Keith- 6 replies

This plant has been in a common area of my building for over a year slowly fading away. And of course, the worse it looked, the more and more a well meaning person came along, noted its sad condition, and thought, more water. It was slowly being watered to death. I finally found the original owner, who realizing too, it was on its death bed, deeded it over to me. I brought it home, aerated the potting mix and am allowing it to dry out, as well as giving it a bit more quality indirect light. What I don't know is what is it? Can you identify please?

Beating the winter doldrums
by _Keith- 5 replies
January here is still in the throws of winter, but it also the time to start seedlings for spring gardens. So, to have something to do other than curse the cold and damp, I started the seedling operation. Put in some Purple Castor Beans (we grow them as annuals here), and trying some new stuff like Perique Tobacco. Of course I planted a some palm seeds like Butia and Sabal too. In the next couple of weeks I will start over 400 seedlings of various things. What are you doing to beat the winter doldrums?

Alocasia Cuprea

Before going off for vacation the leaves of this plant had already wrinkled up and most of the body was a bit mushy. I have not really seen a well grown specimen here in Manila and most others who have tried this plant have not had much luck either. Since it was a tempermental plant to begin with I just concluded that its probably a goner already. I just set the pot in a corner and forgot about it. The other day though I found this. I will not get my hopes up for it though.

Crotons outdoors in SoCal??
by AS in SA- 20 replies

Are there any crotons that can handle our winters? I live in Santa Ana, CA - Orange County (zone 10ish). The pictures under the topic "Crotons Crotons Crotons" are gorgeous - I'd love to plant some of these but am afraid they might be toast come winter time. Are there any extra cold-hardy strains available? Allen... Santa Ana, CA.

Revamping a planter...
by AS in SA- 9 replies
I'm planning on revamping one of my current planters and am looking for ideas. It's currently about 20' long by about 4' deep and is separated from the lawn by bend-a-board. It's filled with cannas that are growing out of control. I've already started pulling the cannas and will likely use this planter for putting some of my potted palms that are in need of getting into the ground. I'm planning on bringing the border out a bit as well - from 4' to 6 or 7". I'd like to replace the bend-a-board with something a bit more attractive as well as possibly offering a slight raise in the planter, but am not sure what. I also don't want to break the bank on it - keeping t…

tall Schizolobium parahyba, Fern Tree
by Eric in Orlando- 6 replies
- 2.4k views
This Fern Tree, Schizolobium parahyba, was germinated in March 2004 and planted in May 2004 from a 1 gal. pot, about 2ft. tall. It is now almost 40ft tall, the green house in the background is appx. 15ft tall. They often grow 30ft before they branch, this one branched last summer. We have a couple others and they have had their foliage yellow and shed after last weeks 31F low. This one has remained green. Hopefully it will flower this year.

To remove or not to remove dead foliage
by Trópico- 4 replies
I am debating whether to remove dead leaves of my bananas. If I do, I may take away some added protection for another freeze which can still happen this time of the year. If I don't, I may risk fungus, rot, etc working its way in from the dead and decaying but not yet dry foliage. After the freeze, do you immediately remove any dead foliage or leave it alone?

Ape or Kalo?
by Wai`anae Steve- 3 replies

How do you tell the difference between them Ape (Alucasia) and Kalo (Colocasia)? I read somewhere that Ape leaves always point up while Kalo leaves point down. If that is true then in the back country of O`ahu you can find this Giant Kolo. The leaves were over 2' in length.

We all get voluntary plants once in a while, birds eat seeds etc etc. next minute a plant rises in your garden which you never planted, nature in it's purest form, a wonderful thing, or is it ? Here's three voluntary plants in my patch I have kept so far. One is a tree fern, another is what I call a golden rain tree and another I have seen many times but not sure of it's name and this is where you come in, can you name it for me please and do you think I should keep it growing. Firstly here's the unknown, do you know what it is please ?
