Orchid Shower Vine

This is a spectacular vine when it is flowering.Mine is not a predictable bloomer but when it does bloom it is worth the wait.It really does look like sprays of Dendrobium orchids. The bracts have a thick velvety texture and last well when cut for arrangements.

Cycad I.D required
by devo_2006- 5 replies

About a year ago I was given a collection a cycads that had been growing for years in pots, and only recieved the occassional watering. So in other words, grown very hard, to virtually bonsai the collection. I repotted them all, & most have shown good flush of growth this season. A few have been I.D'd but I'd like to get names for the balance of the collection. So here's a little one to start with. I'm just repotting it again, adding some more course material, so the mix drains better. It has had a 'flush' of new growth, 2 leaves that came out a fresh bronzy colour, then turn yellow / green before taking on the deep green of the older leaves, which ha…

Hey everybody! I am thinking of acquiring some bananas that will be used as perennials around my patio. Does anyone have recommendations for websites that sell nice bananas? About how much should I pay for a small sized banana? How large will they get over our summer? Our growing season will be mid-may to mid-september. Thanks for all the help.

Mystery vine

One of the pitfalls of trading, I guess.... This was supposed to be a cutting of Hoya megalaster. WHen it came it was a 2 node cutting and looked hoya-ish so I rooted it. Now that its grown, its apparent it's NOT a Hoya. It has large waxy deep green leaves that all have minute small white spots. The blooms come directly from the stem and are small kinda tubular flowers. Any ideas? Here is a close up of the flower buds, and a view of the plant

Papayas and Bananas after upper 29F
by ruskinPalms- 8 replies

Hi All, my Papayas got spanked in this last freeze. They have not collapsed yet and the fruit on the leafless trunks has started to either rot and fall off or rippen and actaully taste pretty good. Will these remaining trunks sprout new leaves? Slowly rot and melt away? Branch from freeze damage? Regrow from the roots? Bananas got spanked too. Pretty my 100% foliage damage on all bananas. Like the Papayas, the trunks are still standing, and non fruiting bananas seem to be pushing damaged spears. Will they regrow? Will the fruit on the ones still make it considering it is firm and green still today? Can fruiting pseudostems draw energy from the corm and mature the fr…

Is Flame Vine hardy here?
by metalfan- 11 replies
This vine is planted inside the greenhouse, but it established a runner that escapes through a crack and grows a lot outside every year. Its blooming now. My question, I guess, is...is Flame Vine hardy here in Gainesville (supposedly zone 9a now)? I didn't think it was. This portion outside goes through a couple of frosts and hard freezes every winter. It went through the most recent one, which was at least down to 22-23F one night. It had NO DAMAGE. I never see it planted out here, so I am just wondering....
