All Looking for some cultivar recommendations for New Zealand flax and internet sources for purchase. I need two or three colors that will work in full sun in my zone. Where I'm putting them, they can't get giant, maybe 4' wide and tall max. Blacks and purples would be bonus. Ideas? Thanks, Steve

another Cordyline, Ti Plant ID needed
by Eric in Orlando- 3 replies

Anyone know what cultivar this might be? Its an older cultivar. I got it from a neighbor down the street from my mom along time ago. She has had it from at least 1979. It is a very vigorous grower that gets leggy quick. She would cut them down every year and they would be 5-6ft by the end of the year. Sometimes the new growth comes out pure white but fades to green, sometimes just pure green. The edges of the leaf have a thin pinkish red margin. Right now some I grew from cuttings last year have a pure white new growth. The first photo is when it is all green, the other 2 are from today with the white new growth

Here's my Fockea edulis that I germinated about 15 years ago Bill. By constantly raising the root structure a little bit higher than the soil surface every 3-4 years you get a really nice caudex.

Croton ID help needed
by SunnyFl- 11 replies
- 1.2k views
There is a large-leaved croton at Dolin's Nursery (St. Pete) which they have tagged "Don't know the name of it." I took some photos in hopes one of the croton experts could help ID it - they'd like to know what it is. I've already looked through Frank Brown's book and the only thing that remotely looks like it is a Ralph Davis hybrid. But that's only a hopeless guess from a single photo.

What is this Cycad? 1 2
by Gbarce- 67 replies
- 5.8k views
As a Christmas gift to myself I bought a cycad ( I couldn't find a palm ok!) The vendor said that it was a Encephalartos Latifrons but he really wasn't sure that that is correct - that is just the name that he remembers. He bought this plant as an offshoot with just 2 leaves around 15 years ago and he remembers that the mother plant had blue green leaves . I looked up E. Latifrons and it is suppose to have glossy green leaves and the leaves look very different. Any Cycad expert out there that can identify it?

It's time for the yearly show on my green jade. I counted (last time I tried) over 100 racemes forming to bloom. I think it makes more blooms every season after I prune it. Three have opened so far. Here's one:

What's this tree?

I picked up this little seed under a Brachychiton acerfolius at the LA Arboretum. I assumed that it was Brachychiton. But it's turning out to be something else. Anyone have any clues? It sorta looks like coffee, but I don't think that's it. Thanks for the help.

Halleria lucida
by Eric in Orlando- 6 replies
- 1.4k views
Our Halleria lucida is flowering for the first time. It is a large shrub/small tree that gets 8-15 ft. tall, ours is around 6ft. It comes from South Africa and is called Fuchsia Tree but isn't a true Fuchsia. It is in the Stillbaceae Family, never heard of this one (formerly in Scrophulariaceae). In wild habitat it is supposed to be a great tree for attracting birds. We have another specimen planted in the Bird Garden but no flowers yet.

Devils' twine

I don't think gardeners will be rushing for these plants. They are parasitic leafless plants that are also rootless for most of their life. There seem to be two varieties around here: one very fine greenish one and the slightly thicker pale red one.

Cold Hardy Avocados
by _Keith- 11 replies
Two years ago I got two 'Wilma' avocados out of Fanick’s Garden Center in San Antonio. They specialize in cold hardy avocado with plants descended from 89 freeze survivors in that area. I have to say these Wilma seem bullet proof. They laugh at frost and freezes. They were flowering in the pots when I got them even though they were only a couple of feet high. After 1 year in the ground, planted out in the open, they flowered again, and even set one fruit each. I can't wait to see what they are going to do this year as they look great. They have at least 2 other varieties as well, and I know of others like the Gainsville variety discussed in another thread. So,…

Variegated banana going to fruit.

My variegated banana is starting to produce a "flower spike" and will eventually fruit and then die. I'll miss it. It was a pretty prominent feature in our "courtyard garden"
