Sylvester palm in 8B

I bought a small Sylvester in march of this year. I bought it from a dealer in TyTy, Ga, which is about 80 miles inland from where I live. I believe I might have made the wrong choice when choosing a date palm. I was initially going to buy a Phoenix dactylifera, but I was told that they weren't as cold hardy as the canary and Sylvester. He even said the dactyliferas he planted on the island (which is a full 9a/9b) didn't make it through the winter's cold. So, I ended up buying the Sylvester, taking his word for it, and also because the canary's growth would have outgrown the spot I was going to put it. After buying it, I started to reading up on the Sylvester. Now I …

How did the Syagrus romanzoffiana do in that region did they take much damage? Did any die? All Queens died on North Padre Island, I was curious to see if those further south in Texas had any Queens that did not survive or if there were no casualties reported that far south? Thanks

Anyone Have Information on Trachycarpus Princeps?

Does anyone have information about Trachycarpus princeps? I have heard various temperature thresholds for this palm, and I am assuming that they are prone to spear pull when young like fortuneis. I have fortuneis, waggies, and one takil so far in my Trachycarpus collection and wanted to expand. Thank you in advance my palm tree friends.

I thought MULES were hardy? 1 2

Hi I have had some queen palm trees that may have been affected by this cold winter season (2014). I have have spent a few hrs looking on here for the best tree to replace these. Ok so I have made my decision after reading many post of how hardy the "mule palm" is thought to be. So i call my nursery, and the owner told me well I only have one and its out frt. of my window - looking at it right now... and it did not fair any better than the queens we have, its looks the same. So she than states let me send you a pic of it. I am thinking well ok maybe it was a small tree and sitting in a pot to my surprise this is what she sent me. Now I know enough from rea…

Finally! A Needle Palm 1 2
by Manalto- 57 replies
- 7.4k views
Today I planted a nice Rhapidophyllum hystrix that I got from my local nursery here on the Gulf Coast. It was in a 15 gallon pot and it's got about a foot of trunk. I chose it because all the needle palms were growing in the same conditions (high overhead canopy) and this one seemed the most robust and open in habit, which I attribute (erroneously?) to seedling variability. It now occupies a position of honor where I can see it from the back door. I've wanted a needle palm since I learned about them in 1992 from Dr. Lawrence Crockett, my horticulture professor at The City College of New York. He brought in an article from the New York Times introducing us to this remarkab…

Has anybody consistently grown palms outside, in zone 6, without cheating? By cheating, I mean building structures around them, or wrapping them, or heating them, etc.

Back in November of 2016, my fiancee and I embarked on a six hour road trip to McCurtain County, Oklahoma, in search of native Sabal minor. About 20 miles southeast of Idabel, there they were, growing in ditches, in pastures, in woods...they truly are weeds down there. Here are some pictures, enjoy!!

Is there any easy way to differentiate Sable palmetto from Sable mexicana? Here in Texas, most nurserys have both and they are widely used in commercial landscaping, not so much in residential situations.

"Palms don't belong in Kansas" and other cold hardy palm oppositions

Hello all, recently, I've run into a lot of folks who, upon seeing my palms, remark "Palms belong in the tropics, not here in Kansas"...to which I often reply "Actually, most palms aren't tropical"...but I've found that people don't want to hear it. They believe the common misconception that all palms are tropical plants...some are even hateful, saying things like "those things are so ugly here!!"...So question is, do any of you "northern zone pushers" run into this issue with uneducated people? If so, what do you say to prove them wrong? Just wondering... -Jacob in Kansas

Who in zone 8 is growing this palm and how is it doing in your climate especially 8a winters? I have a few in the ground for the last few years, their foliage seem just a little less hardy than the regular C. radicals but still rewarding to grow and oh so tropical looking to boot. Roger

Washingtonia Palms Information 1 2

One of the most common palm tree in the world comes in different varieties , Filifera, Robusta or Filibusta ( hybrid ) . How much cold can it handle ? How leaf hardy is it etc etc etc ? This topic should be all about Washingtonias . Starting off with my collection with 4 Filiferas and 1 Robusta. Since they are still young it's hard to tell how "pure" they are but so far from my observations my Californias are Filifera leaning ( two of them I grew from seeds in 2022 / recently planted in ground ) and my Mexican is Robusta leaning .

Alright folks, Alberto's cross is stepping out of the toddler phase and is starting to show some adult characteristics. The fronds are flat, rigid so far. The character is distinctive, but I don't think we're dealing with a mature look yet. What do you call this property of an offset pinnae tip. Every pinnae shows this:

Real Good Looking Cold Hardy Palms
by jvblack930- 35 replies

Hello, I recently visited Florida and I was inspired. I saw all the beautiful Palm Trees, and I wanted one for my home in Memphis. I have some experience with plants, but not much. I was researching what Palms could live here, and I found this site as well with all the information, but, the trees that are options were not good looking at all. Windmill Palm is the worst looking Palm tree I have ever seen, Needle palm looks like a bush and Dwarf Sabal Palm looks weird, and so does Jelly Palm. The only one I might think about is European Fan Palm. But, my real question is, I want some real good looking palms like the tall ones in Florida with nice fan leaves or the feather o…

Windmill Palm- Prongs turning yellow
by Allen G- 20 replies
- 7.2k views
Help- I have an 11 year old 25 ft Windmill palm in backyard at waters (Lake) edge. The lower prongs (leaves) are turning yellow but top and new growth is green. In South Carolina we had a colder Winter than usual- so there may be some cold winter damage. I have never fertilized the palm except for today- I used Miracle Grow Palm Fertilizer which is balanced in Nitrogen, Potassium and Magnesium. I suspect that there is a nutrient deficiency-either Potassium, Magnesium or both. Should I use any thing else? Perhaps a liquid. Also, should I cut off the yellow prongs. Miracle does not have Boron in it . Thanks

Cold resistant Phoenix?

Hello everybody, I wanna discuss Phoenix dactylifera or canariensis and their cold resistance. Do you think that is possible to train a palm from small seedling to survive cold weather (like -15°C)? I wanna try experiment with small Phoenix seedlings: I will let 'em out in colder temperatures to develope cold resistance. Do you think that I have some chance?

It is pretty well documented that Butia x Jubaea F1 hybrids and the various hybrid generations (F2, F3,...) back crossed with Butia, (e.g. (JxB)xB and ((JxB)xB)xB) ) can survive and thrive in the hot and humid east coast where the Jubaea parent of this cross will not. All of these crosses have 50% or less Jubaea genes. This spring I purchased a ((Butia x Jubaea) x Jubaea), which could be up to ~75% Jubaea, from Patric Schafer. The summer here in southeast NC was hot, humid, and wet... If this plant was going to have issues with being hot and damp for months, this summer was a good test. This potted palm so far has been slowly, steadily growing and not showing any sign…
