Chamaerops and Washingtonia seed questions
by NMPalmjunky- 6 replies
I picked up some Chamaerops and some Washingtonia seeds from Encanto Park in Phoenix which has possibly the greatest concentration of palms anywhere in Arizona. Can someone tell me if all seeds look viable? The med seeds are all the same size, but they vary in color from red to purple to blue. The Washingtonia seeds are also the same size, but some are blue and some are tan. I assume that the tan seeds are sterile, but please let me know if they could still be sprouted.

Is this root rot?
by Colin1110082- 1 reply

good evening, I recently made a post because I’m really worried about the leaflets closing on my windmill Palm which I would hate to see die because I spent a lot of money on it. Is this root rot? I don’t know what rotten palm roots look like but I see new growth. The miracle grow palm soil I’m using is well draining because when I dug down into the pot it was pretty dry maybe a little moist but it poured last night and it defiantly wasn’t soaked down there. I hope the closing leaflets are planting shock because I got them bare root and I hope they open up soon. They get 4 hours of direct sun and u water every 2-3 days in 3 gal containers

Question on moisture barrier in winter boxes
by PashkaTLT- 1 follower

Hello guys, Most of us make those "double ceilings" in winter boxes where moisture will gather and be prevented from just dripping on the center of the palm. My question is, how much of a gap on the sides of this inner ceiling do you leave? I leave about 1/4" around all sides, but I'm not sure if it's a good gap or not.

To Fertilize or Not To Fertilize?
by Georgia Mike- 5 replies

Hello, I just planted 3 Trachy Nanus, a Cham Humilis and a Sabal Minor in my front planter. Being freshly transferred from pot to ground, do they need a little bit of fertilizer? I do have Palmgain on hand I live in Central Georgia, on the line between zones 8a & 8b if that has any bearing. Thanks in advance! Mike

Hello guys, I'm out of my net roll that I used to wrap around my palm trees before boxing them. And it won't be delivered in time for the coming freezing days. But I have a roll of Weed Barrier Landscape Fabric. Can I use it to wrap the palms? My concern is that while it's not very well breathable. It does transmit air, but not as well as burlap: https://www.homedepot.com/p/Vigoro-4-ft-x-100-ft-Medium-Duty-Weed-Barrier-Landscape-Fabric-NMV04100B/314273724

Naturalizing CIDP in Texas Hill Country
by DreaminAboutPalms- 1 reply

I first spotted these in 2022 when I was staying at one of the houses nearby, now I just remembered them. There’s this vacant lot out in lakeway that has at least 3 wild CIDP growing. Plus a few Butia, which don’t look too good. I can’t confirm for sure that these are naturalized, however there are two mature CIDP just a block away that they could have come from. Also these are expensive homes, and I’m pretty sure if anyone wanted a CIDP they would just transplant one. There’s also about a dozen Filifera on the same street that are all pretty big. Unfortunately the views when you drive past aren’t great, but you can still see a few of them. Aerial view isn’t m…

Hello, We were able to keep this palm “Ol’ Roy” alive over the winter here in Austin, Texas. I am trying to identify him. My best guess is a 8a cold hardy Washingtonia Filabusta type filifera. https://photos.app.goo.gl/K9XJyhPGo3cY2N6x5

I have variegated examples of both but didn't label them. Thinking about trading this one off but wanted to label it for the next owner. As the title says is there anyway to tell other than just wait and see.

I live in 9a. We planted these trees in July of last year at the start of a drought. They were looking good after a lot of water through the summer and then in the winter we got a really really hard freeze. We have trimmed them back as much as we are comfortable with keeping as much green as possible. We have fertilized them and treated them for Crown rot but now it seems that we have a bug of some sort eating on the leaves. I know the bugs are just enjoying them because they aren't healthy. The last picture is the original tree that we had moved and it is not being affected by the bugs. Any suggestions on how to treat them?

Different sources on the internet say that both of these rattan palms are able to handle temperatures between 20-23F. So I guess these are the hardiest calamoids? Does anyone have these species? How true is this?

I believe last time I posted a few said they were growing one. I would love to see some pictures. It’s one of my favorite hybrids in the garden. It’s the one palm I get the most comments on when people visit. It glows in the afternoon sun. 😎

What is causing this to happen to Sabal minor
by Colin1110082- 5 replies
This is a Sabal minor I planted in june. It gets water every day and full sun for 7 hours. I noticed the tips of the fronds were burning up, even on the new growth. Is this overwatering? It gets about 2 gallons a day. Sometimes I skip if there is rain or if I’m not home all day.

Goodnight Sabal minor
by Colin1110082- 2 replies

Hello, today I finished wrapping up my Sabal minor because it’s supposed to get to the mid and lower teens this week and I’ll keep it wrapped until march. I used Christmas lights, a thermocube that activates at 20 degrees, and some frost cloth wrapped around chicken wire. I’m in zone 6A. I put the lights in the center of the palm and used mulch and rocks to hold the bottom of the cloth down and further trap air inside the enclosure. It’s been a pleasure growing palms with everyone and I hope this palm makes it through. Also thank you to @Allen for showing me how to do this properly. This is unrelated but I added a picture of my cactus because how sad it looks from t…

Lytocaryum Weddellianum or Hoehnei Salt Tolerance?
by Dwarf Fan- 0 replies
In my “Cold Hardy Tropical Looking Dwarf” thread some Palm Talkers recommended Lytocaryum Weddellianum or Hoehnei due to cold tolerance tolerance and maximum growth height. I really LOVE the Tropical looks of the Lytocaryum Spp. but I am a little hesitant due to their many “tender” characteristics regarding sun light, wind and temperature that I have found posted online. Does anyone have any experience growing these near the coast? All online resources I have found has Salt Tolerance listed as: UNKNOWN. Are these even worth me trying to take a chance with under canopy to provide dappled sunlight and near structure to attempt to keep temps from dropping too cold …

Was out of town for a bit and came home to significant spear on my butia odorata (a palm I knew was gonna get damaged from overestimating how cold it really was lol). I tugged on the spear and nothing pulled which I guess is a good sign, but the crown seems a bit loose. I poured some hydrogen peroxide down the spear just now, but is there anything else I should be doing to increase the chances of this palm surviving? Thank you
