Winterizing Queen Palm in Zone 8b 1 2

This year in May I've bought a queen palm from HD and planted it in our front yard. Little know did I know about cold hardy palms back then . My idea is to move it away from the front yard reason number one is this side is exposed to cold fronts moving in from the Northwest . There's an area on the side of the house where it's protected. So if I wrap the trunk with Xmas lights and blankets , put enough mulch around the base and deep water it before a severe cold snap (February 2021 )moves in ,is that enough to keep it alive ? To some it might not be worth it but to me it is and I see a lot of people here pushing the hardiness of their palms . I know it gets more comp…

We are currently considering two Chamaerops humilis palms for our yard. One of them is flowering right now and is a beautiful buttercup yellow color. I have allergies and know that the male palm's pollen can be highly allergenic to some; the female bearing no pollen would be a better choice for allergy sufferers. I can't seem to find anything in the web searches I've done to find out how to differentiate between the two sexes. Is there a color difference in the flowers, like the trachycarpus? It is suppose to go down to 8 degrees F in my area, look in the weather/climate forum for a full post about that. But I was wondering, how should I protect my Trachy for this? It is suppose to snow as well. My little Trachy can't handle this much yet. I am wanting to temporarily protected it for 4 days until the cold is gone. Thanks for any suggestions!

Pindo Palm shedding it's boots

My brother in law has a pindo palm he got about 3 years ago from a local dealer in North Carolina so we don't know how old the palm is. We live in zone 7b and for the most part the tree has been fine. He wraps the trunk and bottom fronds in burlap in the winter to keep it warm and with a pretty mild winter this past year all the fronds were still green unwrapping it ! Now it appears that the bottom boots are falling off (see pictures) the trunk exposed is rock hard so it doesn't seem rotten, so what is going on? There are no signs of bugs and the center spear has put out about 4 new fronds this summer.

Is the Blue version of this palm a sub species? of Pindo or are they a crap shoot as far if they can turn blue or not. Did my searches here and in the web in general. Even read Phil's article about Pindos and no real explanation of why some are green and others blue.

Where are Sabal palmetto grown north of NC? I mean in nersurys or in fields etc. There is this place in Virginia Beach called Palm Tree Mart but when viewing there site, this caught my attention, "field grown or contract grown throughout Northern Florida." Oh boy... If Sabal palmetto were field grown in Virginia Beach, or by seed colected from palms there I bet they would be a lot more hardy than the ones there now. Anyway, does anyone know of any?

Hello everyone, This is my first post on the Palm Talk Forum and I thought it might be useful to share that my mature pair(Male on right, Female on left) of Sago palms (cycas revoluta) have just started flushing. We had a rather chilly winter this year and unfortunately I neglected to cover them resulting in almost total defoliation . Nevertheless, they both appear to be coming back with the male on the right pushing out new growth quite quickly. While I also have a few other specimens these two are definitely my pride and joy.

Hey I was wondering if there was a VERY HARDY alternative to the royal palm, queen palm, coconut palm, or foxtail palm that is fast growing, self seeds like a Washingtonia, and can take temps down to 7-10f. Requirements must be pinnate/feather leaf, grows to around 30-50 feet, slim trunk, preferably easy root system, and NON CLUMPING. I prefer feather over fan but that's my opinion all plants are beautiful. One more thing must be able to take 10f with minimal damage. Don't tell me a pindo those things take forever to grow. We are technically zone 7 but we haven't gone below 10f since the artic blast of 2013-2014. Thanks.

I'm not at the house at the moment but my neighbor sent me this photo of my mule palm that has been in the ground about a year. I guess it had blown over in the wind. He staked it for me. I noticed, the last time I was there and working in the yard, that it was wobbly. It's in the shade in the early morning but gets full sun for the rest of the day. Are they known for having weak root systems? Any suggestions?

I have a trachy I got in the spring. here is a pic when i got it. scince then, it has gained another 3 fronds, and a new spear is comming up. the trunk is also a bit bigger as well. will this survive a border zone 6-7 winter? if so any advice on methods of planting it? I have also seen some more mature ones in norwalk ct. zone 7a

I replanted a Bismarckia I had in a shady spot to a full sun area about 7ft from a Southwest-facing wall of the house. It was only in the shady spot for 3 days. Still, there could be some issues with the roots, and I am tentatively waiting to see if the Bizzie will get established smoothly as the weather warms up. Pardon the makeshift walls (there's a rambunctious 5 month old puppy who loves to chew up palms). Hoping to plant a Washingtonia (it's recovering from being torn out of the ground and used as a chew toy by my dog) about 8-10 feet away from the Bizzie and some non-palm tropical plants.

Last December I purchased that unidentified Sabal in a shop dedicated to sell inventory from shut down plant retailers. It supposedly came from Spain. Hello palmtalkers! I've already had some experience of germinating Butia and now I'm starting my second palm from scratch - Washingtonia, possibly a pure filifera. This is a motherpalm, located in Termez, Uzbekistan. This Washy is 13 years old and it's fruiting for the first time this year. At age of 6-7 it managed to survive an extreme cold snap in february 2014, with a low temperature of -22C (-7.6F), the lowest recorded temperatures in the whole region, and continuous 168 hours of subfreezing temperatures, this is what makes this specimen interesting. I've done a lot of research and have gotten few promising results but does anyone think there are any species of palm trees that can survive in the ground in NE Ohio? If anyone in Ohio has seen or knows of any that are already planted or has any pictures, that would be very helpful. I live in zone 6b because lake Erie is less than 1 mile away and warms up the cold air a little bit, but it can still stay below freezing with snow for long periods of time. The 2 best options that I'm aware of so far are needle palm and sabal minor.

5 years ago, before I knew much about palms, I got a mule palm as a 2 leaf seedling. I read that they were hardy to zone 8a, and given I am in that zone, I thought it would be a good choice. I did not realize that many mules do not survive zone 8a winter temperatures, and definitely not record lows in my area. I decided to plant it anyway last week, and protect it when temperatures reach 18-19 degrees, which happens a couple of times in a typical winter. The soil in my area is extremely poorly draining clay, so I decided to plant it in a mound. About 1/4 of the rootball is below the normal soil level. The reason it is hurricane cut is because of a fungal issue. …

So there has been plenty of talk about this polar vortex. I figured now would be a good time to talk about the survivals. At my house none of my palms are established as I have only been in this house for 18 months now. This was there first winter in the ground and was exactly the weather I was hoping to avoid. We had an ultimate low of 17° per my weather station. No precipitation or frost which I believe made a huge difference in survival. All of my palms in the front yard got the same protection.
