   Sabal seedling repot w/ pics

   Back in August of 2019 while on vacation I collected a few sabal seedlings that had washed ashore one night after a storm had passed in Panama City Beach Florida. I have a thread on "Seeds from the Beach" that you can check out the history if anyone cares. Today I decided it was time to repot one of the seedlings and while doing so was careful not to damage the roots. I was able to snap a few pictures and thought I would share. This is still an unidentified (likely palmetto from what I was told) sabal seedling. It has been in its original pot since August 2019.

   Never been to Memphis before, have to drive out there in a couple weeks and have always heard Memphis has it going on as far as cold hardy palms are concerned. Anyone aware of any nurseries selling potted palms, specifically 3g to 15g trachycarpus in the West Tennessee/ north Mississippi area?

   Princeps frond color :

   My Princeps has an interesting white underside color .The fronds on the top have a green appearance , and are not that blue variety that I think I like the better , but I do like the contrast with the underside of the fronds a lot , and of course the fronds are so elegant looking . I think it will flower year after next since it's trunking quite a lot these days . Will Overview :

   So I'm thinking about moving my trachycarpus closer to my pool. How long will it be in shock 🤔 can I expect it to grow at all? So far we are having seasonal temperatures and it has been slowly pushing new growth. Thanks for your reply in advance.

   Ive counted 8 new fronds on my Sabal palmetto this season . The older fronds were tip damaged , as you can see , by 6F last December . It's a happy palm . Will

   Best way to tie Fronds of palms with sharp appendages?

   Hello everyone. Hope everyone in the lower 48 is staying warm and has their palms comfy. I was wondering if anyone has a great painless way to tie up fronds of a Washingtonia or Phoenix type of palm. You know.... the ones that eat you alive if you get to close to their teeth and thorns. I was just wondering since I seem to struggle each year when it comes time to get them ready for winter. I am not so much worried about the Phoenix yet as it's still easily manageable but with the Washy, it's up on a tall ladder territory and takes me several try's and with a few nice scratches and a couple drops of blood lost.    Seedling Sabals

   Just sharing a photo of some seedling Sabal. Prior to the Texas deep freeze, @DallasPalms sent me some seeds from a few local sabals. I got them in December and they are now at the three strap leaf phase. Not bad for Oregon grown, but it's been a very hot summer. I've labeled them palmetto and causiarum just to differentiate them, but that's just a pure guess because they are probably hybrids of some sort. I can't thank DallasPalms enough for sending the seeds. The germination rate was phenomenal compared to seeds I've gotten from other sources.

   I was never a huge fan of waggles but these have been growing on me as they get some size. The larger of the two has 35” of trunk and the smaller about half that. Pretty care free for me and the bonus is they always looks neat and tidy unlike regular fortunei.

I am finally getting a new leaf and it is indeed very blue, more so than my minors, Brazoria and Louisiana. Makes me hopeful it’s really a Birmingham.     Good Afternoon Everyone, my name is David and I am the proud founder and owner of District and Piedmont Palms. On 10/3/2022 I took my Washingtonia Robustas, Traphycarus Fortuneis, and Christmas Palm tree seedlings inside because we had a little bit of early freezing rain her in DC. I have put them on a shelve in our guestroom and I put grow lights over them and they are also next to the window. I turn on grow lights on for an hour when I wake up in the morning 5:40-7:40am (then I shut them off when I got to work because I am scared of fire and the dogs).     Its that time of the yr that i have already forgot that we have winters..New hope, new spot...south facing wall, best microclimate in garden, whole day winter sun..digg out for about 1m and replace my soil with pomice and goid soil...on the bottom one brick to keep roots in air, atleast for few yrs, from eventual winter over raining..also heating cable for long winter nights to keep it worm and cozy....hope to see some sirious grow soon with our blazing summers in front of the wall and watering and feeding regulary...

    End(ish) of season growth

    Hey All, We’ve had a warmer than usual September which has been good to the minors and needles. They were planted in March in my Z6 Ohio garden this year. Minors have both produced 2 fronds with one unfurling a third. The large needle is pushing out a 4th frond on the main stem and the pups have all produced around 2 each. The Waggie hybrid has produced 5 but was planted in June. Can’t say the minors and needle didn’t get the very best summer conditions this year, so hopefully that gives them some strength during the winter. Although, they will all get burlap, Christmas lights and mulch. Enjoy the pics! Waggie Minors …

    Weird late fall flowers on Sabal bermudana

    Strange, late time to be developing seeds, especially after having already removed first flower/seed structures back in July! This is my Sabal bermudana that miraculously survived the record cold of last Feb ( low of 2*F). Maybe some sort of stress for the plant after such an exposure to something as devastating but the first round of inflorescence were the normal much branched and elongated as usual. These are all super short and scrawny. I count myself fortunate that I didn't lose this 30 year old beauty I bought as a 7 gal at the old Texas Palm Society plant sales they used to do down in Houston! Almost every other palm I bought from that era are gone.

    So my needle palm has flowered this year, he's a boy. My cerifera has flowered also, she's a girl. So I'd seen the palm family diagram and Rhapidophyllum and Chamaerops were somewhat closely related. So why not. My needles flowers are on there way out while the blue med isn't ready. How would you go about collecting, storing, and applying to the female when she's ready. Just winging this here, my plan was to cut off the last inflorescence from the needle shake it on paper,fold and store in the fridge. Then apply when she's ready. Pretty much zero chance for any other pollen contaminating this as I'm in Missouri . Thoughts

    Washingtonia in SW Oregon?

    I'm curious if anyone here has reports on Washingtonia palms growing in the Rogue Valley of SW Oregon. I saw two small W. robusta in a neighborhood in Grants Pass two autumns ago, but not anything big. I wonder if the drier and hotter growing season there would tend to favor filifera or filibusta?

    Anyone have any idea what this palm the top picture was taken after it’s been recovering from a freeze, I forgot it outside and the fronds completely died but it’s pushing up new growth.

    How to arrange windmills in their new home?

    Hello all, I have a fairly narrow flower bed along the fence line that is roughly 20'x5'. I want to rip all the over grown mess out and start over and I'd like to plant a few windmills. I live in SEVA in zone 8a so they do pretty well here. Does anyone have any pics of something similar they could share, as Google hasn't been much help. I've been back and forth as to whether not I'd plant 3-4 trees in a line, or do clusters of 2 at either ends of the bed and fill the middle with other plants. Are there any guidelines of general rules for planting these? Thanks!

    Dwarf Palms Replanting

    I am new to tropical plants and Florida (actually Northern Florida). About 1/8 of our 1 acre yard is covered in Dwarf Palms. I would like to dig some up and replant them near the front of our property as a border. How far apart should I plant them? Also, should I put a fertilizer in the dirt to maybe help them along? We live in Northern Michigan and people use “Dairy Doo” for everything fertilizer.
