T. princeps fall photos
by Fallen Munk- 7 replies

I planted these two in the ground in the spring and took the advice to put them in the hottest, sunniest spot in the yard. Then summer hit and I thought they were going to die. They really looked bad. They didn't grow a single new frond and their color looked terrible. Now that fall has arrived they greened up and started making new fronds. Apparently they like cool wet weather better than summer heat. Now that they have some roots down it will be interesting to see how they do next year.

Growing Sabal Palmetto in the landscape from seed..

Hello, I’ve been a member on the forum for a little while now but this is my first actual post.. so I just had a question and I believe I’m in the right section on the forum.. So I’ve grown a few Sabal Palmettos from seed and they have about 4-5 strap leaves and I have planted them in my landscape here in my warm 8a zone in central GA (15 miles away from what’s considered 8b, so very close) and so my question is, are palmettos worth the time to wait on them to grow as opposed to planting, say, Windmill palms I’ve grown from seed that are already going palmate that will grow circles around the palmettos as far as rate of growth (I’m familiar with the fact that they take a …

Stones and Stone Mulch
by Leelanau Palms- 1 follower

In many of the pictures on Palmtalk, I see rings of stones around the base of palms, as well as stone/gravel mulchs used in a circle around palm trunks. Esthetics/looks are always a factor, but I wonder if there is a functional role for these stones beyond a simple, attractive (moisture retaining, weed suppressing) mulch, such as heat retention. Would love to hear what y'all have to say.

Hello there. Is my Sylvester palm not doing well? It’s been planted since January and I just fertilized with miracle grow granules however I can’t get it into the soil bc of the rocks and landscape paper. Any advice if it’s struggling or not? TIA

ID? W. Filifera? L. Chinensis?
by zimm- 5 replies

Saw this one in South Padre Island, TX earlier this year at the Birding and Nature Center right out front. Having never been around Filifera or Robustas I thought the strikingly green indicated a Filifera vs the MANY Robustas around there. These were the only two pictures I took unfortunately but the teeth were VERY minimal and all green vs yellow or red as what (with my limited experience) you expect to see on Robustas or hybrids. The hugely green nature of this does make me wonder if it is something else entirely like a L. Chinensis which I think has a similar look. Any help?

Today I noticed some grey fuzz around the center part of my sago, I assume this is some form of fungus. There were rolly pollies crawling around in it as well. Is this any cause for concern? We have been getting quite a bit of rain here lately, perhaps that contributed to the fungal growth? Plant appears to be otherwise healthy:

Brown on Trachycarpus leaves.
by PlantDad- 2 replies
I had a customer come into my work with questions about his trachycarpus leaves. I told him that I wasn't sure what was going on but I would try to find an answer. That brown is at the base of some leaves. And it's not on the older fronds, more on the newer ones. Does anyone know what is going on with his palms? Thanks

This palm really took off this year after being in the ground for 4-5 years. I don’t remember exactly when it was planted. But I wanted to post some pictures because winter is coming and it could die at any time. But for now we are beating the odds.

Advice on planting?
by maskedmole- 2 replies

I'm needing to transplant a windmill palm tree either to my front or back yard. My front yard is flatter but has a retaining wall in the way. The backyard is pretty heavily sloped so I'm not sure about it. I have a few palms I planted back there but I'm not sure how they'll do. If I plant on the slope, will the palm eventually fall over or have a lot of dirt wash away in the rain? And if I plant on top of the retaining wall, will it push on the wall causing it to lean? Or if the wall ever fails, will it cause the palm tree to fall down with it? How far from the retaining wall should I plant or can I plant right next to it? Also, how harsh would it be to move it from shade…

I'll be passing through Houston on I-45 soon. Is there anywhere in the area that sells any small sizes of jubaea (or jubaea hybrids), nannorhops, or trithrinax campestris? I know these aren't run-of-the-mill palms, but I thought I would ask anyway. Thanks.

When to plant Washy Filifera in zone 7b?
by knikfar- 5 replies
I just recieved four baby Washy Filifera's. Each is between 5 and 6 inches tall. I know this is going to be a palm that requires protection in my zone but I'm wondering when I should plant them? I have lots of sabal palms about the same size that I planted last year and they sailed through the winter, completely unprotected with no damage at all. I've also read some of these trunking palms are hardier when small because they're focussing on establishing their roots vs gaining height where they'll be more exposed. At the moment, I have them potted and I'm thinking I'll keep them this way over the winter and plant them in late February, when all danger of temps in the teens…

I have heard that “nematodes in the sand” can mysteriously cause the death of otherwise healthy Palms from the genus Jubaea and Trachycarpus after years of problem free growth. Is this a known problem in Texas like in Florida? I am in Corpus Christi does anyone know if the nematodes of Palm death lurk in the coastal sands of Texas?

Removing damaged fronds

Have a young T. Fortunei that didn’t appreciate being turned into a 30gal ice block during our event. Since thawing the fronds absolutely fried, crispy and hard. The tips of the older spears are crispy but the bases, and newest spear still lush. Tugged spears and they’re solid, the question is are these fronds of any use now, or can I trim it back to just spears and let it re crown?

Alright, there's only one place here in Montreal, were there is always a nice selection of hardy palms. Beside your washi and windmills. So this pot was, way back and filled with weeds and was lacking soil. At first I thought it's a minor...but after a little cleaning out and a closer inspection, I'm in doubt. The fronds are split in the middle and they have a slight backwards curve. Heck, I'm thinking its a palmetto, what do you guys think? Anyway this was bought for next to nothing since it wasn't labeled. Thanks for your input

I have found sources for several of the more obscure S. Minor Spp. (Louisiana & Etonia) but I haven’t had much luck finding any of the RARE “Ultra Mini Dwarfs”, does anyone have any leads on the really teeny tiny dwarfs? Also, I heard of a find of some 20+ naturally occurring S. Minor super Dwarfs found in habitat in Liberty County, TX that appear even smaller than the variants out of Florida, has anyone heard any updates about that potentially new Sp. of S. Minor Dwarf? https://www.palmtalk.org/forum/topic/65465-dwarf-sabal-minors-in-texas/ If it is against forum rules to name specific vendors or offer plants for sale in this thread PMs are also appre…

Sabal Palmetto Help
by MAPalms- 10 replies
It would be great if you could help with this Palmtalk. During the winter, I pulled in my palmetto into the house on the coldest nights, when it got below 15 degrees. The rest of the winter it spent on the screened in porch which has a roof. I kept it right up against the house. I placed it outside around 5 days ago. I just came back from a trip and the fronds seemed to have yellowed. It was in the 60s every day and didn’t go below 40. The spear is still very secure and the smaller spear is still green. What is wrong and what can I do to help? All help is well appreciated.

Sabal Brazoria
by GregVirginia7- 2 replies

I don’t know folks but this 8-years or so in-ground Brazoria has morphed into something new this season…it’s growth, compared to past years has been phenomenal…the frond (front) in the picture, is 4.5 feet wide and 3.5 feet high from the base of the costa to the segment tip. The newest open frond is the same if not a little bit bigger. It will remain the Trachy’s understory companion but it seems to be taking up a lot more of that vacant space. Discussed this before, but it seems once that trunk began to take shape, so did the top growth. I have a theory, being a Sabal, it spends several years of energy setting its underground trunk/tap root and at some …
