Figured I’d post these for posterity. The bigger one is an odorata that I planted 6 years ago. The smaller is an eriospatha from 3 years back. They look pretty terrific after this last summer.

Hi All, My 10 year old Windmill Palm is doing well this winter, seems to have made it through our cold spell OK. There is one fan that has taken a serious dip from the crown and wonder if I should cut it off now? Can that hurt the crown if I leave it? Dave

Hello all, I hope you are doing well. I’ve got a short story that, hopefully, will be of interest to at least someone. Today I was checking on some of my Sabal Minor I have growing in pots and I noticed something quite strange with one of them. As I was looking around, I noticed something green poking out of the top of the soil. My initial thought was that some squirrels had unintentionally planted some kind of seed and it had germinated in the pot, so I went to pull it out and I noticed upon further inspection that this appeared to be a new oddly shaped spear coming up. This baffled me, as all of the Sabal minor I own have been repotted twice and…

This robusta has been in ground over two years and has always looked a little ratty and hasn’t grown as fast as the others. Grasshoppers have been eating at it lately. I’ve noticed the newest spear is twisting. Why could this be?

This is a Jubaea Chilensis grown from seed and it’s officially putting out a first leaf. These things can be tough to get sprouted and can easily rot with too little sunlight or too damp soil. soil mix: peat/top soil/earthworm castings mixed together and then the resulting medium finally mixed with 50% perlite. pots are deep “disposable” plastic pots from Amazon. humid zone 8a Alabama.

Hi everyone, I’m pretty sure my trachycarpus f is flowering for the first time. I’m pretty excited but curious, do they often push flowers out that far down the trunk? I thought they came out of the crown.

Hi everyone I recently started researching the germination stage of coconut palms and want to buy some coconut fruit with sprouts inside the shell. We have a greenhouse in the lab, but the seeds will suffer the whole day transportation with a temperature down to 0°C. I'm unsure if the seed can still sprout, so I came here for help. Thanks.

Brown sandal spear
by Futuresvt- 6 replies

Of the 3 planted palms one year ago. This one is looking the worst. Had a bad ice and snow few days this winter. Is there still a chance or should I start looking for a replacement ? Or will a new spear grow and push out the brown dead portion? The first photo is from today and the last is from September. All the fronds but one turned brown and I trimmed them once fully brown. The last remaining frond is still green but it might start browning. I can’t determine yet.

Growing Sabal Palmetto in the landscape from seed..

Hello, I’ve been a member on the forum for a little while now but this is my first actual post.. so I just had a question and I believe I’m in the right section on the forum.. So I’ve grown a few Sabal Palmettos from seed and they have about 4-5 strap leaves and I have planted them in my landscape here in my warm 8a zone in central GA (15 miles away from what’s considered 8b, so very close) and so my question is, are palmettos worth the time to wait on them to grow as opposed to planting, say, Windmill palms I’ve grown from seed that are already going palmate that will grow circles around the palmettos as far as rate of growth (I’m familiar with the fact that they take a …

Dark Green Fronds
by BeyondTheGarden- 5 replies
I planted this Trachy earlier this summer, the fronds have turned very dark green. The Mahonia x media next to it has exhibited the same thing. Thus is under the canopy of some big Doug firs, and was getting watered daily by a lawn sprinkler (how I water the entire garden). I'm assuming it's a nutrient deficiency, the soil here seems rather void of organic material. If that's the case, I also assume it's too late in the year to apply fertilizer?

Multi-point temperature sensor
by zimm- 4 replies

I am sorry for having to ask this as I've seen a post somewhere with a 4-5 position temperature sensor but cannot find it. I'm looking for one of those weather station devices that has an indoor unit that displays temperatures and multiple outdoor sensors I can place - ideally so I can get garage temp (overwintering seedlings), back yard temp (general year round outdoor air temp), plus several I can place on prized palms under frost cloth/christmas lights to ensure temperatures are OK. Any recommendations on something you love? Minimum 3 sensors ideally. Thanks!

Growth Observations and Trachy Placement
by ColumbusPalm- 3 replies
Hey All, Wanted to share some observations I've had so far in my 6a garden in Columbus, OH. I planted 4 palms in late March, 3 minors and a Needle. They all seem to be showing some growth already which I am pretty excited about (two minors even producing inflorescence). My smaller minor is the only one so far that has shown zero signs of growth. I bought it from a grower near Lake Erie so I am wondering if it is a McCurtain or just taking its time. My great Z6 experiment is.. growing..I am also going to try a Waggie and a Naini Tal. Was hoping for opinions on placement for the Waggie (it will be a larger palm). I am planning on some good protectio…

How Much Water
by stopsail- 3 replies

Hello, I planted two Sabel Palms in Topsail Beach NC.. They are 12-15ft tall. Planted in Dec 2020. The contractor planted them in 100% sand. One tree has lived while one died. They replaced the dead one back in Sept of 2021 and now it has died. They state I am giving them too much water. I have a drip irrigation. I watered everyday for the first week, every other day for the second week, every third day for third and fourth week, then once a week. They are getting about 50 gallons once a week unless it rains. Question 1: What can I do better when I have it replaced for the 2nd time as far as watering? Questions 2: The 2nd Palm that is still alive, can you…

So I ordered a Sabal Tamaulipas, a Sabal blackburniana, and a Sabal miamiensis. I mixed up the tags when I received them so I don’t know which is which. I’m thinking this is the Tamaulipas but I’ve never seen curled fronds before. Is this normal?
