I seen more than a few posts here extolling the virtues of a couple treatments of hydrogen peroxide to moldy/overwatered Palms and it really does work like magic!!! I am trying to do organic non-chemical gardening even with my palms (Organic Soil & Palm Tone) so I was looking for less toxic options to revive a Windmill Waggie that I got for only $10 bucks as a rehab project from a Nursery owner in San Antonio who is a big Palm guy (he also has the BEST in ground bamboo collection I’ve ever seen in Texas, PTers in San Antonio will know what nursery I’m talking about). Anyways, I sprayed down into the crown until it was completely drenched and I also sprayed …

I'm seeing a forecasted low anywhere from 18-22F Sunday morning . That will blacken and crisp up these Trachy inflorescences , as well as ruin a lot of blooms on a lot of other plants . It's too bad because this is a nice showy place to see those inflorescences from inside the house . What's your low tonight ? Will

Hey All, I just snagged this locally for $20. It was labeled “Chinese fan palm”. I know it’s a Trachy, likely just a regular fortunei? Just wanted to verify. Thanks in advance!

Leaf reduction in cycads
by projectpat- 2 replies

Hello I was wondering if anyone in the community has information regarding leaf reduction in cycads. More specifically cycad revoluta or sago palm. I see lots of sagos in my area and lots of different leaf sizes. Once they have hardened off of course, I know they will be different as they start to leaf out in spring. I have seen old sagos 3-4ft tall with fronds only 1-2ft long, but also ones with 3-4ft long fronds. I don't know if this is genetic or what, but sometimes they are right next to each other with different length fronds. Anyways any information would be great.

Livistonia Chinensis Survivors in Zone 8b Texas?

What percentage survived 5F or thereabouts? I have one tall one left. Survived 4F unprotected and took full force of weather. 3 others survived too. Did better than Washingtonia percentage wise for me. It got beat up this winter from 22F wind and ice this year, but it did have a nice crown by last year. I expect it to look good by late summer. Not sure if the trunk will end up with damage. But I like the curve it developed at base.

Post Feb 14th Texas freeze: During the freeze, there was a spear growing that consisted of the unfurled future fronds. Eventually that spear grew out and now about 5 inches of petiole have cleared. Altogether, the palm has probably put on about 13 inches of growth. An old petiole is still growing. However, a new tiny spear was just emerging when the freeze hit. It was so small that I couldn't measure its growth. Recently, I noticed it was brown and not growing. I could not pull out the spear because it is too short, but I could tell there was rot. Using a blade, and pulling the spear through the side, I removed 16 inches. The rest of the spear is inside…

Hello all, I hope you are doing well. I’ve got a short story that, hopefully, will be of interest to at least someone. Today I was checking on some of my Sabal Minor I have growing in pots and I noticed something quite strange with one of them. As I was looking around, I noticed something green poking out of the top of the soil. My initial thought was that some squirrels had unintentionally planted some kind of seed and it had germinated in the pot, so I went to pull it out and I noticed upon further inspection that this appeared to be a new oddly shaped spear coming up. This baffled me, as all of the Sabal minor I own have been repotted twice and…

Sabal minor with black spots?

I planted this maybe 2 years ago. The black spots have been on there since then and hasn't seemed to bother the plant and it looks to be doing pretty good. Should I trim off the affected leaves? It goes both on the stem and leaves but most of the leaves are unaffected and green.

Sabal palm browning
by Futuresvt- 3 replies

Planted these on March 21st this year. I watered heavy in the beginning almost daily. It has been an unusual cooler summer for us in Georgia. Haven’t had a day in July over 90. Lots of cloud cover and rain. When I check the 3-4 inches of mulch is always damp. I added some sand to our clay soil when I planted the palms. The spear is still green with no or very little signs of new growth. I have added some of the Jobes organic palm fertilizer about 3 weeks ago. I went on the lighter side and used about 2ish cups per palm. Why do I have one palm starting to brown more than the other two? Should I be concerned?

T. Fortunei purchase root ball size
by Palmlex- 6 replies

Hey everyone, My budget allows me to get a $200-ish Trachycarpus Fortunei at the moment. Since I'm ordering online, I don't know exactly how the plant will look, but I have 2 options available and I was wondering what you might think. Both palms are around 4-6'. What would you get? A smaller palm with a larger root ball? (Assuming it fills up the container it comes in) or a taller palm with around 10 inches more trunk but a smaller root ball? Thanks, Alex

Hi folks, Happy New Year! Just curious if anyone has any anecdotal experiences to share regarding Dypsis sp. Bef (single trunk) and how cold tolerant it is. Any other particular considerations (soil, sun, etc.) to know about regarding this one? Looking to potentially try it in NorCal. thanks! Justin

Winter Protection Tips Please
by D Palm- 1 follower

I am going into my second winter with my Roystonea Regia. I moved it twice this spring and summer. It’s final spot is 10’ from the back porch south facing spot of the house. A swimming pool was installed with a 20’ walk way which should be a favorable micro climate. I have noticed over the winters, 20-30’ from the house (before the pool was installed) frost would rarely accumulate on the grass. Furthermore, the grass stayed green throughout winter in this zone while the rest of the yard browned over late Jan-Feb. Any tips for protection will be greatly appreciated!!

How much of a difference does it make if you peel all the fibre or coating off the trachycarpus seeds vs just putting them in dirt as they come off the tree, I got 2000 seeds I want to try with

I planted this trachycarpus back in March, took a while for weather to warm up, it opened its first and second frond/leaf, now I noticed it got 3 more spears2 big ones and another small spear, does this mean this palm is now established or does it just like where it is planted.

Trachys & Sabals in Pots - Wintering
by ColumbusPalm- 4 replies
Hey All, I have quite a few palms in pots. As we get nearer to fall/winter, I am wondering what to do with them as I do not have a garage. I do have a wood shed but not sure if that would be warm enough for them?Should I leave them out and just put them in the shed with Christmas lights and maybe heat mats underneath the pots during the coldest weeks/days? Not sure how quickly soil in the pots would freeze but if the highs were in the 40s in the day and 20s at night, would that freeze them? That's a typical January/February here with some cold snaps here and there that may last a week. Appreciate any opinions on it.
