Hey guys and gals, A little background: At the beginning of my palm fascination I purchased from a big box store what was labeled as a sabal minor. I took it home and found a good spot that gathers a lot of water near the mailbox. Later that winter we got a bad ice storm and temperatures somewhere in the low 20's if I remember correctly. The "sabal minor" near the mailbox was completely fried. I thought it was from the FreezePruf I applied earlier that day but still, there's no way a s. minor would burn like that. Here's the thread on that (with pictures, too) >>> Aftermath of the Cold/Pimp Slap (Pictures) - COLD HARDY PALMS - PalmTalk Aft…

When is too late to plant in zone 6b

Hello! I know that Spring is the preferred time to plant in the colder areas. I got another Trachycarpus fortunei and a Mule the other day and was wondering if now is too late. First frost is somewhere late October but we usually have a lot of still warm days for several weeks. Trachy is total of 2 1/2 ft and Mule 4ft. I would of course protect those like my other Palms but was just curious if it's feasible to plant now or if it's too risky. Thanks as always! Brian

Trachy F. Recovery From Sudden Christmas Freeze
by GregVirginia7- 2 replies
Removed a few more terminal fronds from this past winter…I guess my biggest wake up was sudden freeze v. gradual acclimation into winter…if the weather scenario happens again, all I can do is protect the crown and the emerging spears from exposure damage… this will go a long way to getting a more aesthetic recovery as the exposed spears got fried on the exposed portions and they show it… live and learn! I think by the end of the season, all the 2022 winter fronds will be gone and it will have replaced about 2/3rds of them…great palm for sure. Let’s see what El Niño has to bring…🤔😳😂

Do I have to remove the thin black layer over the Sabal seed before I throw them around on the ground? Or will that thin layer just fall off naturally? Asking for a friend lol

Palmetto Tree infra red lights for Winter
by charlotte palm guy- 1 reply

I had an adult palmetto brought in to my back yard in Charlotte, NC last Spring. It did well and grew new fronds. Some of the booting on sides of trunk peeled off, but it was a pretty dry Summer. Otherwise, it’s doing fine. I clamped 2 infra red lights facing up about halfway up the tree. I turn on when it gets below 32 at night now. Do you think this will give the tree the added warmth it needs to almost guarantee it survives winter? See pic

It’s a Boy?

So is my Trachy a boy? Pictures aren’t that great but flowers are very yellow...still hoping to see a hermaphroditic flower spike since my other Trachy is very young, has years to go till it flowers and I have no idea if it’s male or female...I know that would be a very rare occurrence but that would be interesting...

Trachycarpus experience/ID?/questions Z7a

In may of 2019 I planted what I purchased as a Trachycarpus Nainital. It's in the foreground (left side) of the first picture (taken Oct 2019) while a T Fortunei, which was smaller and had been in the ground for 2 summers and 3 winters is in the background to the right. In the second picture, taken today, the T fortunei has gotten much taller than the Trachy in the foreground. The trachy in the foreground has put out several new fronds each summer but has gained very little height/trunk. The third picture is a pic of the hostula of the Trachy in the foreground, which is asymmetric (The pointed hump is off center, but the hostula is not twisted). [The hostula on the…

Canary Island & other Date Palms
by Banana Belt- 10 replies

Observation: One of the growth habits of the CIDP is when getting older they tend to have at the lower end of their trunk an exposure of what appears to be roots trying to form. The older the palm gets the more and higher up the trunk these aborted roots are exposed. Question: Why is that? Are the palms pushing themselves up exposing more roots to the air, or do these roots begin to grow at the bottom of the trunk where leaves once grew? Theory: I can think of one theory explaining these exposed aborted roots which would be that date palms grow in desert areas such as North Africa where drifting sand can easily bury the lower trunks of palms in sand. Could…

Trachy growth is the average of about a foot each year here. Planted in full sun and covered during winter months to avoid access moisture. Last winter we had lows of 0-5 degrees on a few occasions. above was last October the present hight compared to the window shutter. Measured 11 inches.

Spear pull - moisture after rain
by smatofu- 16 replies

Hello Guys! Unfortunately, I pulled spear from my CIDP. I don't cut the trunk yet, but I cut all fronts to the level where spear cavity starts. the cavity is about 8-12 inches deep. I cover the palm when its raining. After recent rain, I've noticed dew over the cut fronds. Water also collected at the bottom of the spear cavity. Wouldn't that mean that the palm is still alive? That there is healthy and live tissue inside the trunk? Thank you!

I have a large wash behind my house next to a highway, which is on ADOT property. It is completely overgrown with invasive plants - Tamarisk, Mullein, and Trees of Heaven - and Desertbroom. My thought is, if I'm going to have this ugly area of overgrown invasives, why not introduce something a little better looking and less noxious to the native flora than these plants? My family has been saving the pits from the dates we buy weekly. We probably have 200 at this point. I want to scatter them throughout the wash so hopefully they germinate and grow into palms. What time of year should I do this to ensure best results? How likely am I to be successful? The Hassa…

These don't seem to match what palmpedia has listed. I bagged them up in perlite and hydroton, and some others in peatmoss/hydroton. Keeping them in the growbox around 85f, and another batch on a heat pad. Got these off ebay FWIW. Top pic is mine, the bottom two pics are from palmpedia.

Hi all Right on the cusp of 8a (7b/8a), palms are everywhere here in Carlsbad, NM. Just bought some sagos, thought they would look nice in the mailbox planters by my house. What should I expect with them? I got them at Walmart, they were in some pots. Also bought my first real palm (Euro fan palm) at a greenhouse today. Any advice?
