What palms for my climate.
by MonkeDonkezz- 4 replies

I am in zone 7a, 2 blocks from zone 7b. I would protect the palms, mostly from early January to mid February, which is the coldest period in nyc. I do not have any microclimates around my house, except a small spot with very dry and claylike soil under a tree. So what species could I grow? I know I could grow Sabal Minor and Rhapidophyllum Hystrix when they are mature without protection, and I could grow Trachycarpus Fortunei but minimally with protection most years, Palms can be from 6b-8b

Where to buy Sabal Palmettos online

Hello Palmtalk. I’m looking for a good place to buy palmettos online that will ship up here to the north for next spring. I am looking for something larger than a seedling but around 1-5 gallons range. Preferably cheap, less than $200. If a larger one can be found for cheaper than I am happy to have one of those too. As always, any help is well appreciated.

Hi all. I know an exact replica of Areca triandra for cold weather does not exist but does anyone know a plant that gives similar effect. The closest one I found was Chamaedorea seifrizii. Thank you very much for any advise!

Beccariophoenix Alfredii (Cold hardy Coconut) in NC

I have been growing this Beccariophoenix Alfredii here in North Carolina. It is currently 2 years old and grown from seed. So far this palm has done amazing for me. I keep it outside most of the time but whenever there is an unusual temperature dip or cold front I put it in the greenhouse (since it is still young). Once this palm gets big enough I plan on planting it in the ground with mild protection during the winter. Where I live it is very rare for it to get below 20f and it has not dropped that low in many years. So with the right precautions I know this will work. I successfully grew a 4(?) year old one here with no protection throughout two winters but I lost this…

Hello everyone! Last year I overwintered my two Washingtonia robustas here in zone 6b by using some type of Styrofoam board secured on a 2 x 4 frame and c9 Xmas lights connected to a thermo cube. It worked great until it got really warm here in February with temps close to 80F, where I had to open them up, which caused a whole lot of mess with the Styrofoam material. All in all it protected them really good and my Palms took on about 2 feet this year. So now that I have to adjust and get more materials I was wondering what direction would be best. Go with Foam board like this https://www.lowes.com/pd/GreenGuard-GreenGuard-LG-1-X-4-X-8-XPS-Insulation-Board/5…

I have a few inflorescences that had green seeds still and were unprotected through a few recent freezes here in Texas. Are they definite goners and going to be unviable now, or are they potentially still going to be usable after they ripen (if they ripen). The Sabal Palmetto seeds started turning more dark after the freeze, but the butia capitata still looks green/unphased. I suspect I will see more reaction over the coming week from each but am curious as to what I can hope for.

Green Phoenix sylvestris?
by Pee Dee Palms- 7 replies

So a nearby nursery here in Myrtle Beach usually carries a few Phoenix sylvestris and this one particularly caught my eye. For whatever reason, this palm seems MUCH more green than the usual silvery color most P. sylvestris have. Anyone know what causes this? Genetics, a disease, light intake?

Mule palm damage

Hi! I’m in central Florida near Ocala. We purchased 3 mule palms in September and they have been doing great until just recently. A lot of browning and even looks like pest damage. I know nothing about palms other than that these are cold hardy. We planted them ourselves and followed the nursery’s instructions to a T. We tried to make sure there were no air pockets, however we did not use water as we planted. That was not instructed by them. They got palm fertilizer as we planted and watered every day for a month. We have a few cold nights, but nothing below 35 degrees. I have not pruned them yet so I don’t think they have that disease caused by contaminated pruning tools…

Small Fayetteville , NC Washy questions :
by WSimpson- 7 replies
Below are 2 pictures of the same palms that I took a couple of days ago of Knikfar's Fayetteville , NC Washys that he sent me . I'm not used to dealing with small palm sprouts like these and was wondering if the pot size , soil , fertilizer , etc , is right for these 3 plants , and generally what is the best way of getting them to a more stable size and to the summer heat without dying . I plan on putting them outside on sunny days and putting them on a warm router during nights . Is there anything obvious I need to be doing ? Should I fertilize a little now or wait till summer ? Thanks , Will

Tofino, BC - Furthest North 9a in North America?
by ShadyDan- 8 replies

I just spent a few nights with my wife in Tofino on the west side of Vancouver Island relaxing and (trying) to surf. Of course, I also spent some time checking out the local flora like always whenever I go. I always love seeing all the giant Cordylines around town (I know, not technically a palm but similar appearance/ feel) and was worried they may have been nuked from the series of bad winters we have had recently. All the large ones I know on Eastern Vancouver Island were fried back in December 2021 and got hit again this year. I was happy to see the ones in Tofino all look perfectly healthy with no sign of cold damage / collapse. For this reason, I would put Tofino …

Needle in TX
by Keys6505- 2 replies
I grabbed this 7g Needle on clearance at Wally's last year (maybe the year before). It's spent it's time since in the nusery pot along my fence, so it's been in mostly shade. I just moved it out to the patio so it's in afternoon sun now, trying to stretch it all the way out to full sun. I know they say Needles can handle sun or shade, but can they handle all-day 100* plus blazing hot TX sun? I had a spot open up courtesy of the last freeze and want to put something there that's shorter than a full tree and requires less cold temperature maintenance and this guy fits the bill.

So, I unwrapped the blankets, lights, bungees and bucket from my recently planted Trachycarpus fortunei (less than one year in the ground). It looks good. If you protect yours, when do you remove their winter coats? Now debating if I should plant all the others in the Spring and do the annual protection (for at least a few years). Protecting this one took all of 10 minutes but it's only five feet tall now.

These two are part of a row of sabals in downtown myrtle. Always interesting to me to see the trunk diameter differences in these palms. I've always figured that differences in growing conditions (amount of light, water, temperature, etc) played a major role in making this happen but you can throw that theory out the window with these.

When to plant
by bgifford- 4 replies

Hello everyone. I finally decided to plant some of my Palms this year here in zone 6b. I have some Trachycarpus fortunei and Washingtonia Robusta that I want to plant. Having seen others in lower zones have success protecting theirs I thought I should do ok here. So my question is: When should I plant? Meaning should I go by certain temps or once the risk of a frost has past. Thanks B
