Odd Pindo Problem

This is my buddy's palm, thought I'd see if I could get him some help with it. Overall the palm seems happy and steadily puts out new growth but if you divide the palm into 4 sections around its circumference (think of drawing a cross through a circle to get 4 quadrants) there is one section where the foliage shrivels up and dies much sooner than the rest of the tree. I've attached some pictures to show what's going on. The area in question is pretty noticeable as it starts at the base of the palm and terminates at the new growth. I took two pictures of fronds as well, 1 showing a close up of what the odd area looks like and a healthy one at about the same hei…

When can I put my zone 9 palms outside?

Hello, Should I wait until the temperature never drops below 50F (10C) or it's fine if, say, one night it drops to 40-45F (5-7C) but in general it's 50F+ (10C+)? Currently our average day temperature is 70F (21C) and average night temperature is 47F (8C). In a few days I will have: Majesty, Cat, Sago, European, Windmill, Pindo, all in pots.

Thin Trunks
by ahosey01- 3 replies

Looking for some recommendations on palms that can take the desert heat and sun and cold down to the 20s, but also have skinny trunks. Only thing I can think of is W. robusta - which I am absolutely unable to find in pure form. Any other suggestions? I have a couple spots that are kind of narrow, so I’d like to fill in with something.

Small Sabal with papery ligules

I have a young palm in front of my house that was labeled "Sabal texana" when I bought it (at Smithfield Gardens in Suffolk, VA?) a few years ago. I assumed that it would turn out to be a 'Brazoriensis." It has (slowly) developed papery legumes, similar to Sabal causiarum. It is growing among bamboo roots and is holding its own. Hardiness at this young age is similar to S palmetto. Any guesses as to which Sabal this really is?

My great experiment continues… I am thrilled with the Waggy, but after the poll of hardiness, I do wish I would’ve invested in a fortunei this size. With protection, I am hoping to pull it through. I’m going to make a greenhouse like structure for it and use ceramic heat bulbs during the coldest days/nights. Will grow this Brazoria in a pot for the season and try it when I move to 6b next year. Thanks for looking! Nate

Greetings. I'm trying to figure out what kind of palm tree is growing in the images pasted below. It is located in Oregon's southern Willamette valley. It is a single tree with no other source of pollination that I know of. So far, based its shape and hardiness in the area (it must have been growing here for a while) I have heard it is probably some flavor of Trachycarpus but I haven't found any pictures of fruit like this. Any ideas? Thanks! https://imgur.com/gallery/0nN3xw3 https://imgur.com/gallery/T5Wi4c3

planting near structures
by NWpalms@206- 1 follower

Just wondering thoughts/experiences with how close to plant palms to structures, specifically house foundation and near septic tank. I believe I read that palms don't have tap roots that will penetrate and damage cement or other barrier types. I want to snug my few borderline palms right up against the house on the south side (BxPJS, BxPJT and Santa Catarina Queen) as I witnessed that the snow and ice thawed substantially faster about 2-3ft from the foundation, and a big warm spot over and around where the septic tank is buried. Obviously they dont want to be on top of the tank but if i can get the roots as close to that warm geothermal stuff i think it would only help. …

Sabal rosei - post winter storm Gerri 2024 update

Sabal rosei…. 90 hours below freezing, 9.9F ultimate low, no supplemental heat and here we are. WOW. This is a cold hardy contender, and thus far I’m rating these as DFW hardy.. I probably didn't need to cover it this year, but I really loved the amount of growth I got over the year, and didn't want to risk losing any of it. Turns out I don't need to worry! I will say that I am pleasantly surprised. The big reveal..... hah.

Maine Isle of palms, winter damage 2022-23

With it turning the calendar to may, I’ve already seen active growth. Heres the end of winter state in the Maine isle of palms: The windmill survived its fourth winter and going into its 5th summer here with minimal damage. Our cold snap of -14 with -30 windchills was able to get into the green house thru a crack I failed to seal and I struggled to keep it above zero with the portable green house heating fan. Damage was sustained to a few tips of several fronds getting windburn but the bulk of the frond was still green. New frond growth was marked last fall before winter: the sabal minor palms were covered with frost cloth and a full size comfor…

The first and fourth pic is when I first planted a year and a half ago. The 2nd and 3rd is from today. Sorry for the random upload. it use to be upright and now it grows kinda bunches up and the older longer fronds droop to the ground. It’s looked this way right about a month after planting it. It seems to grow fine but I have had trouble with two smaller Mediterranean fan palms that are basically one sucker right now that is barely surviving. I don’t water it a lot but it does get a lot of rain water.

Hello everyone, I was in Columbia, South Carolina today and there was a massive 40 foot tall T. fortunei with a lot of volunteers underneath. I attempted to yank one out, but I didn’t pull the roots out! Is there any way of caring for this young palm so that it can grow back its roots? Thank you! PalmsUSA

This is my C. Revolta in my yard, I definitely need some help with, it first off what is it afflicted with and how do I get rid of it (preferably without chemicals)? Second, I normally don’t look very closely at it because I stopped watering it because I felt I was overwatering (leaves/fronds started to curl where I was spraying it with the hose). Watering advise would also be much appreciated! 🫤 As far as it’s history I know it has been in ground at least 2+ years and was placed here somewhat grown already and it survived the previous homeowner who according to neighbors “never watered it.”

Mule palms and wind

I have a second mule palm that I probably will plant out this spring, but where I'm thinking of placing it will receive strong winds multiple times a year. How do all yours handle it? Do they look the same after a wind storm or more likely to take some damage to the fronds?

S. minor late season dig.

Over the years I have utilized the sprinkler from my septic system to help me sprout and grow a lot of plants. I made a bed around the sprinkler that I have planted with Musa basjoo. The bananas love it, since it gets water daily throughout the hot summer months. I have also used this bed as a lazy way to sprout S. Minor seeds as well. I can just rake back some of the leaf litter, toss the seeds, and let the sprinkler keep them wet for me. I have left the little sabal seedlings in the bed all winter before, and almost all of them survive when I do. Even though they get sprayed with water and frozen most nights through the winter, they have enough leaf mulch surv…

S. Mexicana transplant issue
by Keys6505- 1 follower

I had 3 S. Mexicanas planted in my yard about 3 weeks ago to replace a jillion oleander hedges that got frozen to the ground. These trees were all field dug but had been regenerated in 90gal pots at the nursery made obvious by how root bound they were when removed from the pots. This is the smallest trunk of the 3 and some of the leaves on this one have gone crispy while the other 2 trees are fine. The outer leaves and spear look to be unphased, however. The few newest leaves (minus the spear) are totally brown. I understand these trees typically don't transplant well when dug, but even though this had been regenerated is there a chance that they still could have dama…
