How well do Braheas move?
by Chester B- 6 replies
Anyone ever move their Brahea? If so do they tolerate it well? I have one that isn't in the best location, and now the plants around it are giving it more shade than it wants. It's still pretty small, less than a foot of trunk. Thanks for your input.

What is the shortest "trunking" Sabal
by The7thLegend- 3 replies
Can anyone tell me what is the shortest "trunking" Sabal Palm that I can use in zone 8b/9a? I have sabal minor, serenoa repens, etc but I'm looking for a quicker trunking Sabal that stays short. Sabal Bermudana, Palmetto, Riverside, or whatever? A Sabal that will trunk but not grow to skyscraper heights. Thanks.

Trachycarpus and watering system (6b)
by ThePole- 2 replies
Hello everyone I am new here, this is my first post. My name is Maciej and I live in Central Poland, 6b hardiness zone. I really love palms. I have an areca palm indoors and one chamareops humilis outdoors potted. Here in Poland, despite the cold in winters (and recently heat waves in summers), quite many people grow palms outdoors. Mostly trachys, sometimes washingtonias and chamareops. Due to cold we have to use heating for wintering. Usually people use heating wires and white cloth. Some people even use graveyard candles (those that are ment to keep the heat for couple days). Anyway, I wanted to plant my first trachycarpus fortunei plus poten…

Royals in 28 - Xmas light protection?
by Breaktheory- 9 replies
Hello! I live in a suburb of LA where it’s rarely below 35 however I have seen it dip down to 28 in the early AM for an hour in December. This probably happens only a few times a year but I don’t want to plant royals if they’ll die. It was suggested to me that I wrap trees in Xmas lights during winter to provide warmth - is this an effective method? Thank you!

People often ask, which is more cold hardy? W. Filifera or S. Mexicana. Last winter in Dallas we had a test for cold endurance. 3F with 10 consecutive days below freezing. I wouldn’t make a sweeping generalization, but more s. Mexicanas survived than did the washingtonianas. Large adult specimens of both species were wiped out. There were a few survivors of both species. In the following images you will see the one large palm specimen that survived ( with its foliage intact too) among a group of palms. An adult and nearby juvenile Sabal mexicana survived among 5 filifera. All grown on site from seedlings.

high humidity and winterized Mexcan fan palm
by vistaprime- 1 follower

Repost: Do I need to be concerned about the high humidity my Mexican fan palm is showing while it's boxed up for winter. it's been hitting over 90% while the mule palm only 10 feet ( about 3 meters) away is showing humidity in the 70's on average. The crown of the Washingtonia was sprayed with copper fungicide before boxing up and I am scratching my head why both palms are showing such different humidity readings when they are so close together. Today the humidity in the box hit 97% in the box. I read online that leaves can actually turn brown and dry due to high humidity? Should I be overly concerned. thanks.

South-Central USA Serenoa Population?
by L.A.M.- 1 follower

If anyone has photographic proof of wild Serenoa repens and/or formal documentation of them in Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana or Mississippi, I'd like to know. I believe they're real, but finding wild ones isn't easy even where they're widespread and common and for people knowing where to look. In my recent catalog of palm species native to every USA state/territory, I listed Serenoa repens as present in Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi, which a commenter questioned. Multiple sources cite Arkansas and Louisiana as the western boundary. There's also a discussion about the likelihood of a wild Tennessee Sabal minor population, and I'm convinced that at least …

by frondly- 7 replies
Hey everyone. I have two 3ft trunk 5” diameter TFs, they’ve been enjoying in ground here for 3 years. Zone 8b to 9a in BC gulf islands. this past winter was what it was, 100 year rains and 50 yr colds… after 1000 year heat in the summer of course! so I got to the cabin and they are looking really bad. Just traces of green inside but otherwise super damaged. Any suggestions on repair techniques? I have some new palms from @ShadyDan that I am stoked to get in the ground… but this takes a bit of wind out of the sails… Thanks All!

Sabal ID and Leaf Question
by ahosey01- 5 replies
Long story, but I got this Sabal for free last night. The thing is big... maybe 7-8ft planted? It’s in a 15G and clearly outgrew it’s pot. Any idea on an ID? Also - can anyone tell me if those little orange spots on the leaves are indicative of disease or deficiency?

First time I've ever seen a termite tunnel up on the newest spear of a young planted palm. There's a large population in this part of my property but thankfully no evidence of any around the house (I've had the house treated shortly after buying the property). I washed away the new construction project and I'll keep an eye on it going forward.

Defibering my Trachy nainital :
by WSimpson- 9 replies
I decided to see how much I could defiber this Trachy . I stopped when I started to see white on the trunk . Near the bottom of the trunk , where there is a color change , you can see that its fiber started to come off naturally . As the leaf sheath and its fiber is cut off , the trunk will start to get whitish the higher you defiber . I stop when I see it getting whitish because the white part of the trunk tissue is live tissue , even though the frond sheath and fiber may have been cut off over a year earlier . That whitish trunk tissue is moist and my theory is that by cutting too high up on the trunk I might be contrib…

Hey All, I have some smaller takils and fortunei I’m wondering if I should plant this spring. I know the bigger the hardier but for a Z6 where I will protect either way, does it matter? I am ok with waiting to bulk them up another year, just wanting opinions. I attached pictures for reference. Thanks in advance Nate

Zone 5 unboxing

Zone 5 south of Montreal, finally temps are mild enough to unbox the needle/minor. Windmill will wait until next weekend. The needle palm was unphased by cold temps, even the offsets are green and flawless. Sabal minor first winter, two fronds are shrivelled....that thing is a trooper. Random pictures, spear pull on the tiny saw palmetto, I was sorta expecting it....
