Palms for the high desert

Hello all, I was wondering if anyone grew palms in the high desert zone 8b ish. I'm about 4500 ft elevation, summer highs about 105f and winter lows to about 15f, but usually in the 30s. I'm considering the following for starting a grove of palms for edible fruits: Washingtonia filifera - california fan palm Sabal Minor -palmetto Serenoa Repens - saw palmetto Phoenix canariensis - canary island date Butia Capitata - jelly palm Any critique about the assortment would be helpful. The site would be a source facing slope with good drainage and sandy soil. Thanks.

Will send photos of the garden soon, but right now 4 cannas are or have bloomed and bananas woke up and started to speed up growth, and my calla lily and my other cannas newly planted are speeding up growth. I am also starting my own business, for now I will be selling only one item, which will be a variety pack of canna seeds, one with both dwarf orange/pinkish flowering cannas, and the large canna tropicana. I will also be selling more dwarf canna seeds later on. I will soon start selling palms, and will acclimate them to cold in order for them to keep a good hardiness level. Sabal Minor seeds finally germinated

Well, I purchased 100 Sabal Minor seeds last May on eBay for 10$ from Dallas. I peeled them and put them in a seed tray with little pods. Nothing happened over the summer. During the winter one spontaneously germinated somehow in my cold garage. I had almost given up on the seeds this spring. Since warmer weather was coming I just put them in a plastic bag in my greenhouse. To my surprise two weeks later about 10 germinated. Then the next week 4 and today I found 16. So happy they finally grew and now I have 30 which are already potted up and some are peaking out of the soil. Next spring many will go in the ground.

This palm was 4' tall when it was planted in 2017; December 24, 2022 it went to -2 degrees in Saluda, NC. These are the new fronds as of July 2023 Picture below shows spear starting to emerge in Spring after head had been drenched with fungicide once the dead fronds were removed

I have not been posting any pics on here but thought I would share this Cyathea Cooperi I am growing...picture isn't great but you get the idea,its about 8' tall with at least that much of a spread and the fronds are at least 6' with maybe a foot and a half of trunk. Thanks for looking.

I read that Trachys are slow growers. well I'm guessing mine missed the memo. I've only had this tree for just over a year and WOW. In that year the Tree threw out 8 Fronds, grew 5" and it's trunk is 4 times thicker, The fronds like to bend though....

Transplanted those 8 footers last week. There is 4 of them. Only one still looks green and the other 3 are turning brown. Anything I should be worried about other than transplantation shock. It’s pretty warm here in New Mexico. I water them with a hose every morning and irrigation in the evening.

Jubaea hybrid seed blunder

Bought some Jubaea seeds on ebay, seller gullivergall out of California. Upon opening the package there were a few extra seeds wrapped in foil, I dumped them on top of the rest. Then I read the note that said, "the 5 extra seeds are Hybrid Jubaea & Jelly". ... Whoops... I did my best to determine which 5 were the topmost seeds, but is there any way to distinguish? I'm guessing if they are truly hybrids, momma was a Jubaea and the seeds are indistinguishable?

Needle palm ID question

About a dozen years ago, I separated this palm from a clump at my father's house in California and took it to Tennessee with me. 9 years ago I dug it up and transplanted it to my current home in the North Carolina mountains. My Dad didn't remember the genus and species, but was pretty sure it was native to NC or Georgia. Since then I'm about 99.9% sure I've ID'd it as Needle Palm, Rhapidophyllum hystrix. The thing is, I say "99.9%" because of the size of the plant: it's about 3 feet tall, and has been about 3 feet tall since at least 1978, the earliest date I can be certain that it was growing at my Dad's house. Hi, This palm was recently sold to me by a private seller stating that it was Livistona nitida. However, the seller admitted that he identified the palm simply by looking at pictures. Despite my user name, I am not actually qualified to say whether this is really L. nitida or perhaps, for example, L. australis. Another piece of information: The palm has mostly stayed indoors and that contributes to the overall appearance of this palm. I would appreciate an identification to be able to better incorporate it into my garden planning.

Can anyone tell me what is the shortest "trunking" Sabal Palm that I can use in zone 8b/9a? I have sabal minor, serenoa repens, etc but I'm looking for a quicker trunking Sabal that stays short. Sabal Bermudana, Palmetto, Riverside, or whatever? A Sabal that will trunk but not grow to skyscraper heights. Thanks.

Anyone ever move their Brahea? If so do they tolerate it well? I have one that isn't in the best location, and now the plants around it are giving it more shade than it wants. It's still pretty small, less than a foot of trunk. Thanks for your input.

I have an areca palm indoors and one chamareops humilis outdoors potted. Here in Poland, despite the cold in winters (and recently heat waves in summers), quite many people grow palms outdoors. Mostly trachys, sometimes washingtonias and chamareops. Due to cold we have to use heating for wintering. Usually people use heating wires and white cloth. Sadly winter will come at some point, bringing the beautiful plants to be covered up, and since I am really hoping that the new winterization protections will work, Im also wondering about a couple things, also coldest temps usually start in decemeber with -4f to -3f at night or day to -7f to -10f at night during february, anyways Im wondering about a couple things. First of all, Im wondering if I can mulch the canna and elephant ear bulbs and put a tarp over it or a frost cloth for the winter and then reapply some mulch on the tarp to keep the bulbs warm during the winter? Hello! I live in a suburb of LA where it’s rarely below 35 however I have seen it dip down to 28 in the early AM for an hour in December. This probably happens only a few times a year but I don’t want to plant royals if they’ll die. It was suggested to me that I wrap trees in Xmas lights during winter to provide warmth - is this an effective method? Thank you!

Long story, but I got this Sabal for free last night. The thing is big... maybe 7-8ft planted? It’s in a 15G and clearly outgrew it’s pot. Any idea on an ID? Also - can anyone tell me if those little orange spots on the leaves are indicative of disease or deficiency?
