So I was out and about, running some errands around the Cottonwood Mall area. So I decided to check out the palms there in the area. I believe the neighborhood block been between Coors Bypass/Golf Course and Westside/McMahon has the highest concentration of palm trees in the metro. With a total of about eight at five different houses. Here are a few pics I took at two of the houses. The other locations I didn't get a chance to take pictures. These two at Rayado Pl are doing great and they both have bloomed this year!

Arenga ryukyunensis 1 2

Hi, I'm new to this forum. My name is Louis and I live in Japan, 9a. I lived in Okinawa (Ryu-kyu new name) for 1 year (11a). I brought back some plants, including Arenga ryukyunensis. I heard that the most close palm is Arenga engleri, which is cold hardy to -6 degrees Celcius. Would someone know if it would be reasonable to think that Arenga ryukyunensis is also cold hardy to -6C? I attached a pic of my palm. Thanks for your help, Louis

Windmill palm brown leaves them stopped growing new fronds
by charlotte palm guy- 16 replies

My windmill started growing in dead brown fronds (although the stems were green) this late Spring. Now it totally stopped growing new ones. The older green growth is still green but worried it will all die soon. Had the palm there for about 2-3 years. Have not transplanted other then when I initially planted in ground. Oddly, a friend of mine who lives in the region has the SAME thing going on with his windmill…. I’m in Charlotte. Any ideas? My other tropicals (sago, Mediterranean, and banana plants have done fine (with some winter protection). See pics

Any ideas for 8a palms, that would stay under ~4 feet tall? Aside from Trachycarpus nanus and Brahea moorei, which are both about impossible to find... Looking for things to put in front of my house, that would not obscure the front porch. I am open to non-palm recommendations as well. BLE's/non-deciduous. Thank you.

Texas Queens Palms After Freeze 2021 1 2

These are alive. Mine had made it though 14.5 but are dead. Looks like 2 in Sugar Land lived through low 10s. He is using Silver Queen and Litoralis as the same. They are not, Also how does he know what they? He should state their background. Most likely they are what was termed silver queens. If they are 30 years old, they may have been from offspring that survived in the RGV, Laredo or north Florida. Those were the silver queens. I had those, I had plants purchased from the RGV. My Litoralis were recent introduction ( Late 2000s) and I got my seedling from Jeff Marcus. I still have a 15 gallon Litoralis, and I have seeds from this past fall from my Silver Q…

A few people had mentioned wanting to see some of my palms. All of these are growing in zone 9a with only the Kerriodoxa and and Chambeyronia getting supplemental heat. I'll keep adding more photos over the next few days while I'm home, let me know if you have any requests!

Hey guys, I purchased a 6 and 1/2 ft Mexican fan palm 5 months ago at a local nursery here in Connecticut of all places. I know the chances of survival if planted are slim with no protection,so she was potted and placed on my porch. For the upcoming winter I built a greenhouse, more of a plastic enclosure over and around my deck, sealing it completely , that keeps the wind and some cold out. I have a space heater to keep temps warm, so that is not my issue, however I need to know how much ARTIFICIAL light is necessary to keep her alive! My porch probably only got 4 or 5 hours of direct sunlight in the summer, and therefore she has some browning and doesnt look as good as …

The Palms of the Oblate School of Theology 1 2 3

On the recommendation of @Fusca, I decided to take a drive over to the Oblate School of Theology on this foggy day here in San Antonio. Man, that place did not disappoint. In terms of sheer volume, as well as presentation, it rivals the Riverwalk and Botanical Gardens with its palm specimens (it is open to the public by the way). It is a sprawling complex, and I doubt that I captured all of the specimens on the compound. There is a lot of stuff growing here that I have seen no where else in San Antonio. I can't believe some of this stuff is even growing here. I know that some discussion has been had previously about this place on threads like Cold Hardy Palms in San…

Pindo Palm for Zone 7
by Cosmo- 11 replies

So I have one more slot in my pool landscape for a specimen planting. I have narrowed my choices to either a multi head Thompson yucca or a Pindo palm. Both are similiarly priced. I know the yucca will laugh at our winters but what about the Pindo. Yeah, verily I may live in zone 7 according to the USDA charts but we know that is always just a good story. As a lazy palm grower would I be better going with the yucca. There is so much conflicting info about hardiness I thought I would get some real world experience and expert opinions. Thanks

Fruiting Date Palms in Northern California zone 8-9?

Hello, my name is Kyle. My horticultural journey has lead me from bonsai, cacti, and now palms! But what I love more than looking at palms is eating their fruit! So my first major palm purchase will be a fruiting variety, Phoenix Dactylsomethin, but I am concerned about their fruiting ability in Northern CA. Upon searching, I have read various times that you won't get fruit out of a palm in N CA. (Oh yeah? >:]) I'm hoping many of you will laugh at a Californian with his first world problem and tell me, of course it will fruit. I'm in Auburn CA. Edge of zone 8-9. Closer to 8. 1700'. I found a nice little gem of info Fao.org that seems like it's the date palm …

(Thought this deserved its own thread) How are you holding up? It isn't officially summer yet and the garden looks like its the end of summer already here in Texas (I have some Taxodiums edging into dormancy already). Palms appear to hold up fine but even I, being the lazy gardener I am, have to consider some sort of a watering schedule now! It doesn't look like these temps are letting up anytime soon. In Texas we have been and will be hitting triple digits almost every day (I am afraid to look at the humidex values). Are any of your palms suffering yet? Other plants you regretted planting? Stay hydrated, friends!

Advice Needed for Trachycarpus Fortunei
by siege2050- 17 replies
- 5.6k views
Hello everyone, I am sure you have heard this before but I was wondering, what is a realistic growth rate for Trachycarpus Fortunei per year. I ordered 4 off of ebay for about 11 dollars apiece as its not possible to find them around here. Our summers here in Oklahoma are around 95 F up to 105 F a few times, very humid, winters are down to as low as 0 F zone 7a. Soil in yard is acidic oak, hickory, pine forest. Also would it be safe to plant them in full sun if it does get as hot as 105 F? Will I have to protect them from now on, or will they become more cold tolerant and not need protection when older?

Here are some picture from the last three weeks, since it spring today I thought this would be a good time to showcase the garden before it gets to overgrown with exotics. In the little drought tolerant part of the garden I have decided to only have orange flowers so heres a few. Poppy are easy to grow and this one will reseed each fall. Semi Native succulent Lewsia… this one is a hybrid. Interesting barberry with unusual flower buds, flowers open to inside down daffodil like flower in bright yellow. Native current blooming for the hummingbirds.

Can I grow any palm tree in New Jersey, USA, if I'm ready to do something to protect it in cold winter?

Hello, I'm in zone 6a-6b (on the border). Can I grow any palm tree here (maybe windmill palm?), provided I'm willing to protect the tree during the coldest times, i.e. - Covering with a blanket - Using Christmas lights or heating cables - Covering the base of the tree with mulch to protect the roots - Heavy watering - Special sprays - Placing a patio heater nearby ? Also, can I grow smaller palm trees in large pots, that I can take inside on the coldest days? I know about the Sago palm (which is technically not a palm tree, but looks very very like one). Any other options? PS. Always wanted to leave in the South and have p…

Hello Everyone, I just bought two needle palms from hawkpalms on ebay in an attempt to fill up some extra space on the base my dune. This is incredibly close to the ocean and the temperature is rarely warmer than 80 all summer because of the cold water. In the winter I'd say it rarely gets below 15. The last few weeks have been pretty wet and cold and now its starting to get nicer. I was wondering if anyone had an idea if this is worth a try having minimal protection or if the winter will be too harsh. The dune also acts as a shield from the wind coming from the ocean which I think could be helpful.
