My Butia odorata is taking over the walkway . A picture from inside the house . Pretty big Minor volunteer . It's an NC ecotype . Sabal Louisiana . Lots of seed ripening . My largest Needle Palm . It's about 7-8 feet to the tip of the highest frond . This Citrumelo will look like this throughout Christmas and they start falling off in early January . I get more people asking about this tree . I've gotten to where I don't answer the door anymore when I think someone is inquiring about it . Will

Hello guys, I've watched a few videos on the box method, but I still have a few questions. 1) Most people use Christmas Lights, but I think they are ineffective for heating (or am I wrong?). Maybe there are other, more effective options that will spend all energy on heating and not light? 2) Some people make clear top or clear sides for sunlight to get in. Others do not get sunlight inside at all. The easier method is of course to just use the same rigid foam and not spend additional time & money on making "windows". But I'm worried that if I get a bad winter and I will have to keep the palms boxed for several months, will they survive without a window?…

A few Sabal minors

These are from seeds I got from RPS. Seedlings overwinter in ground here no problem. This prevents me from having to mess with heat mats and keep more community pots inside this winter. Next spring/ summer plan to pot these up. Going to plant another bed in spring with all the seeds I harvest this year as well. Filled the bed with organic raised bed bagged soil. Topped with organic composted humus as a top cover/ mulch on top of the seeds. Watered the bed everyday and viola.

A flower appears? My first time.

It's still kinda hard to see, but is this a flower spike developing on my needle palm? The other side of the trunk has one as well. The plant just had its second winter in the ground. I was under the impression they don't flower until they're a bit older, but I have no experience.

Visited the good Doctor's garden today down in the historic section of Charleston. I'm really amazed at some of the things he is growing. He said he has never protected anything. Fruiting queen palm, two nice Acrocomia totai (Haven't produced fruit yet) Rhapis Excelsa, multiple Butia hybrid palms he acquired from the late Merrill Wilcox... A two story seed grown avocado...

Hey gang :). I am germinating Windmill Palm seeds, I know they don't need light to germinate, but quite a few of them are sprouting roots but now spade bud. If i put them in a bright window, will that encourage them to sprout faster, or does it matter? Thanks

A Little Good News
by GoatLockerGuns- 13 replies

This juvenile Brahea armata suffered spear pull a few weeks after the Great Texas Freeze of 2021 (wet freeze with 2 nights at 6F and 9F, respectively); however, it started pushing up a new spear this past week. I am cautiously optimistic for this little guy. With the exception of my Sabal palmetto, Sabal mexicana, Sabal minor, Serenoa repens, and Nannorrhops ritchiana (all of which are now wet freeze champions in my opinion), every other palm I have planted outside (covered or not) has suffered spear pull since the freeze event (i.e., Washingtonia sp., Phoenix sp., Trachycarpus fortunei, Sabal causiarum, Brahea sp. "Super Silver," and Trithrinax brasiliensis). To date,…

I prompted some AI plant advice programs about cold tolerant palms. The following is what seems to be the most comprehensive list returned. Trachycarpus fortunei (Chinese Windmill Palm) - Down to -10°C (14°F) Trachycarpus wagnerianus (Miniature Chusan Palm) - Down to -17°C (1°F) Sabal minor (Dwarf Palmetto) - Down to -18°C (0°F) Sabal palmetto (Cabbage Palmetto) - Down to -12°C (10°F) Butia capitata (Pindo Palm or Jelly Palm) - Down to -12°C (10°F) Rhapidophyllum hystrix (Needle Palm) - Down to -20°C (-4°F) Chamaerops humilis (European Fan Palm) - Down to -12°C (10°F) Washingtonia robusta (Mexican Fan Palm) - Down …

A rare Chamaerops form
by Phoenikakias- 25 replies

It grows tall and it is caespitose. Fronds have long petioles and a small, pleated, round blade. Texture is stiff like the leaves of Brahea armata. Petiole is is only half armed, meaning that spines are to be found only on the proximal half of the petiole. I was sondering whether it can be a cross the cultivar volcano with another trunking form. From a close distance it gives an exotic impression.

A stand of saw palmetto in SE Louisiana
by Sabal_Louisiana- 0 replies

While it remains abundant in coastal Mississippi, some literature suggests that saw palmetto (Serenoa repens) may be extinct in Louisiana. Previously, it had been noted from St. Tammany and Orleans parishes in the far southeast of the state. However, there is a small group naturally occurring at the present in an isolated part of eastern Orleans parish, shown here: https://warcapps.usgs.gov/PlantID/Species/Details/2759 Furthermore, I have seen this group located right off LA Hwy 22 near Madisonville in St. Tammany Parish, close to the entrance of Fairview-Riverside SP. If it is a native population it would almost undoubtedly be at the extreme west…

A Survey of Palms in the UK

Hi all,I am undertaking some research for my dissertation on the various palm species currently being grown in the UK. This is in partnership with the RHS and I will be producing distribution maps for each of the species included. This is currently and understudied area. I would really appreciate if you could take 10 minutes to complete the below survey if you grow palms outside in the UK. https://reading.onlinesurveys.ac.uk/palms-and-allies-in-uk-cultivationThanks and regards,Martin

A trachy with 360 degree leaves at the big box store

Everytime I go to OSH, I look at the nursery stock to see what's out there. To my surprise, yesterday, I came across several trachys that had total 360 degree leaves. They looked quite unusual, so I picked one up. It's impossible to tell where the petiole is on those leaves. And the entire lot was like this.

A true safe bet for zone 7 palm growers?
by Subtropical LIS- 13 replies

I was taking pictures of my palmetto a few days ago and also snaped a pic of my needle palm. This palm has been in the ground for more than 5 years here on the Connecticut coast of Long Island Sound and is flawless. It grows like crazy, and after the 2nd winter, very few of the fronds ever show cold damage (maybe a few tips that turn brown) and puts out 5 to 7 fronds a season. It has taken 4 F (my coldest temp in 6 years) like a champ. My guess after half a decade is that for those in zone 7 Needle palm is a pretty safe bet. My only complaint is that when we get snow on occasion here on the coast (normally wet and heavy) some of the fronds get a little beat up. …

A very happy Trachycarpus
by Pip- 7 replies

Here is my Trachycarpus fortunei not very meny months after I initially planted it out in 2010. I had previously kept it in a pot for a few years, it had been grown as an indoor house plant by my aunty when it was very young. I saved it from certain death as indoors it wasn't getting enough light. Here it is today enjoying moist spring weather And it is really very happy this is the second spring that it has flowered. I guess I'll have a Trachycarpus lawn in no time.
